Man, 71, arrested on drug charges A 71-year-old Scotland man faces drug charges after a month-long undercover investigation. According to court documents, a confidential informant bought 1 gram of suspected methamphetamine on three separate occasions in August from Larry D. Medlock. The confidential informant made each of the $100 purchases at Medlock's residence on Highway 95 West, according to the court papers. The 20th Judicial Drug Crime Task Force assisted by the Van Buren County sheriff's office executed a search warrant at the Medlock residence on Sept. 8, 2016. Agents conducting the search of the house and shop building found three glass smoking devices, several plastic bags, some with the

corners cut off, two digital scales and pay/owe sheets, according to the documents. In Medlock's pocket, agents located 11 pre-packaged corner bags with a white crystal-like substance inside and one larger bag with a white crystal-like substance inside, according to the court documents. During an interview with a task force agent, Medlock stated he has sold about 1 ounce of meth a week for two or three months, according to the court papers. He said the money he made from selling the drugs was used to buy more meth for himself to ease his back pain, the document states. Medlock has been charged with delivery of methamphetamine, a Class C felony; felony pos-

It was standing room only Friday in Van Buren County Circuit Court. Judge H.G. Foster heard cases ranging from the commitment to a mental hospital of a woman who testified she hates Arkansas and its "winding roads," and just wants to go back to Kansas, to more run of the mill drug proceedings. Foster granted four orders of protection, denied one, dismissed another,

and continued one until Oct. 21. In two of the cases, neither party was present for the hearing. In some of the criminal cases: - Sarah Pine, 31, rejected a plea offer from the prosecutor's office and requested a jury trial on charges of maintaining drug premises, a Class C felony, and delivery of meth-cocaine, a See Court on page 8

Runaway lands in Clinton A frightened boy ran away from his home in Fort Smith and ended up in Clinton last Wednesday. The 12-year-old told Clinton Police that he had become involved in an incident in which a cell phone had been stolen and that he feared he was going to be killed by a gang.

The boy, who lives with his grandmother, said he had walked and hitched rides to get away. The youth knocked on a door in the Walnut Grove area Wednesday, asking how far he was from town, according to the homeowner. The homeowner called neighbors

who picked the boy up and took him to Taco Bell in Clinton. A Clinton Police officer transported the child to the Van Buren County Detention Center and called his grandmother. The grandmother drove to Clinton to pick up the young runaway.

Passenger flees trooper Medlock session of methamphetamine with purpose to deliver; felony use or possession of paraphernalia to manufacture, etc.; felony possession of drug paraphernalia to ingest, inhale, etc.; and failure to keep record-maintaining drug premises, a Class C felony. Medlock is scheduled for plea and arraignment in Van Buren County Circuit Court on Sept. 26.

There was some excitement in downtown Clinton Friday afternoon as law enforcement officers chased a man who bailed out of a vehicle during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 65. An Arkansas State trooper made the stop and the passenger jumped out and ran, heading through the parking lot of the Citgo gasoline station and into the downtown area. He was seen heading toward the lumber store and cemetery when officers lost sight of

him. They reportedly were about to call off the search when the suspect was spotted again, this time outside an apartment on School Hill. Officers apprehended the suspect who was hiding under some shrubs outside the apartment about 4:15 p.m. The suspect was identified as Michael Mills, 31, of Clinton who was wanted for failure to appear. He had been charged in July with theft by receiving and was due in court on Aug. 22. According to

court documents, a 2012 white Ford Super Duty 350 truck had been stolen on July 20. Mills called police and said he had the truck but had not stolen it, according to the documents. He later told police he had bought the truck for $3,000 but would not say who he had bought it from, telling police to just take him to jail, according to the court papers. The Blue Book value of the truck was reported to be $22,000$25,000. Mills had been free on $2,500 bond.

Wanda Shannon Clinton

Visitors of Hal and Wanda Owens over the Labor Day Weekend were Tommy (son) and Penny Owens of Millington, Tennessee, Jerry (son), Terry and Landon Owens of Dover, Ashton (daughter of Jerry), and Kyle Wilson, their two children Kinlee and Karter of Morrilton, Janet (daughter), children Ryley and Reese McDonald of Clinton, also home from College (UCA) was Randi McDonald. Wanda said that they had a wonderful time and Hal and she had leftovers for several days. Duane and I have been in Bradenton, Florida, visiting family for a couple of weeks. We were also checking out the place we purchased a few months back, he had not seen it in person. We are planning on spending the winters there. We visited my sister Betty Lovens who is in a nursing facility there, she has Alzheimer’s. It was nice to spend time with her. We also got to spend time with my niece her daughter Jackie and David Mitchem. I also got to spend time with my sister Martha Reiter and her daughter Debbie and her husband Mark. Martha had fallen a few weeks back and broke her shoulder and was in the hospital and rehab, but is back at home now. She is still recovering from that, but seems to be doing better. Something else that went on while we were there was the hurricane and tropical storm, that part was not enjoyable but we survived and got to weather the storm as we say some time. The last week was full of sunshine and we enjoyed that. For so many who

are wishing the election season would get here quickly, remember school board election is September 20. Justin Bintliff and Tim Barnes are seeking the position. Check your zone by calling the clerk's office. Several from Clinton are on a cruise this week to ports in New England and Nova Scotia - Faye Rodgers, Rhonda Davis, Sunny and John Hargis, and Glenda and Eric Stagg are hoping to find cooler weather there I'm certain. Debbie and Kenny Whillock were in Fayetteville last weekend for the ballgame but gave their tickets to sons Ken and Jon and stayed in Bentonville to play with their granddaughter Charlie Anne we hear. Condolences to Claudette Watts Pennington on the loss of her mother Lorene on Sept. 1. Claudette's sister, Shirley Carlile, stayed for a few days to visit after services. Also, sympathy to Betty Jolly Campbell whose aunt Willie Mae Hinchey passed away the 4th. Both Lorene and Willie Mae were born and spent most of their lives at Dennard. Joe T. Rodgers has been in the St. Vincent's hospital in Little Rock for some heart issues, we understand. Reba and Frankie Rooney spent Labor Day weekend in Branson with son Casey and family, also niece Kim Linn and family. One highlight was eating at Lambert’s in Ozark! I would like to thank Sherrin Richardson for helping me do the news for the last two weeks,

while we were gone. The first week she did it all and this week was a joint adventure. She is a good friend to me and to this community. We apologize to Sue Fraser for mistakenly reporting that she had broken her hip. Sue tells us she appreciates all the phone calls from well-wishers, but she is just fine.

James & Joyce Burns Scotland

The Scotland community is growing. We want to welcome a new resident. Name: Elwin Monroe Whitmore. Born: Tuesday, September 6 and the proud mama and papa are Essie and Ethan Whitemore. All is well and they are at home. Well it seems that the Chuckwagon Races are over for one more year. This is the first year the Masons have not had

a food booth in 30 years. James Burns and Glen Griggs still wanted to be involved so they helped cook hush puppies (for the trail ride that ended up at the park in Clinton) on Tuesday night and everyone that worked had a fun time. I think they served about 600 cowboys and cowgirls. What an awesome way for Clinton to show how much this event is appreciated every year. The races bring a lot of revenue into Van Buren County each year. This is a good time to say a big thank you to all of the people that volunteered and worked together. James also wanted to help with the Cowboy Catfish dinners that the Senior Center has each year so he helped cook hush puppies Friday and Saturday night. James and Joyce Burns celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary on Mon-

September 13, 2016 day the 6th of September. We have been very blessed to have shared this many years together and 38 of them have been here at Scotland. Thanks everyone for remembering. Remember, this week is the Van Buren County Fair. Go and have fun! Have a great week and if anyone has Scotland news call James Burns at 592-3935 and he will get it into the paper.

Debby Prout Highway 110

Enjoying these last few days of summer? I hope it’s almost done! Fall is just days away now. Not a whole lot happening up on the hill. Been busy with mowing and bush hogging. Lots of growth this summer. Look for the Highway 110 VFD ad next week on the grand opening of the new building and the Firewise Appreciation dinner. Sept. 24th at the firehouse on Elba Road from 6-9 p.m. Lucky Draw band will be playing and there will tons of food. Come out and visit.

Saw Verl Jackson managing projects in his yard so I stopped to sit a spell. He was feeling well and gave me an education on the advantages of his old zero turn lawnmower over his new one. Verl is one of those responsible Crabtree residents that likes keeping our roadsides looking like a city park boulevard. So next time you see him astride his mighty mower give him a wave and send a silent thanks. To my surprise I saw my former next door neighbor Eddy Williams at Verl's washing a golf cart. He shared his happiness about his life circumstances and was eagerly awaiting working on the fixer upper he and his wife had recently purchased. Sindee and David Morse took their grandchildren Kylah Anderson and Maddox Foster to the Barnum and Bailey Circus in Little Rock. Frankie Ward smoked meat for family members for the holiday meal. We had a good crowd of around 50 in attendance. We all had a

I suppose everyone had a big Labor Day weekend. Jason and I had a quiet Saturday with no one here. On Sunday morning we went to church, then in the afternoon Randall, Ann, Lane, Niki and Kenadee came for a little while. Lane and Niki’s family camped out on Archey Creek Friday and Saturday nights. James and Lori Hinchey joined the bunch on Saturday and they all went for a ride in their side by sides. They all had a good time together. Today (Monday) Jason and Randall finished their spraying and then mowed yards in the afternoon. Randall also

did some bush hogging, so it has been kinda busy around here. It was really Labor Day for us. Ha! Mike and Cindy McReynolds family from Missouri spent the weekend with Ronnie and Thereisa and their family. I know they have had a good time together. Our attendance at Liberty Baptist Church was real low Sunday morning and also Sunday night. A lot of the members were at the wagon races in Clinton, and I guess some of the others were doing other things. I want to say happy birthday to Alma Myrick and also to our niece Vicky (Housley) McClung up in Springdale. Both their birthdays are September 6th. My mother passed away nine years ago on that day. In some ways it seems like it was yesterday, and in other ways it seems like it has been forever. I still miss her and also my daddy so much. I had a doctor’s appointment Friday morning in Little Rock, so our daughter, Nancy met us there and we got to visit for a little while before coming home. I called Ronnie and Randall called Ann to meet us for lunch. We all had a good visit. The cooler nights and early mornings have sure been nice for a change. I’m really not looking forward to fall, but it will be nice to have cooler weather. Have a good week and God bless everyone. We have just heard that Willie Mae Hinchey passed away, and we are so sorry to hear that. The family has our deepest sympathy. Our sympathy goes out to all others who have lost loved ones. Dwight Wilson was head volunteer cook at a fish fry recently hosted by the city.

Van Buren County Volunteers Dwight Wilson

If you’re looking for a cook, Dwight Wilson might be your man. The former Zoning Department director for the city of Clinton was busy at his business Tri-State Marketing when he was called back for fish-frying duties at the cowboy appreciation dinner sponsored by the city earlier this month. Wilson said they fed about 600 at the fish fry. He said he doesn’t plan to make being head fish-frying chef an annual gig, but he does enjoy cooking, so you never know. In the meantime, he works at his business, where he and wife Judy rent RV spaces and sell Derksen buildings, carports, propane and knickknacks. The former contractor from south Arkansas also enjoys woodworking and makes birdhouses. During his 12 years as zoning official, Wilson obtained many grants for the city worth several mil-

lion dollars, including grants for an early alarm system, lighting for the softball fields, and the walking trails in City Park. One regret Wilson has is that the city didn’t act upon a $450,000 grant he had secured for a splash pad at the park and new playground equipment, and the deadline has expired. It was a matching grant, Wilson said, but the city would have had 10 years to match it. The Wilsons are happy for the free time they have for regular visits to Branson to see their grandchildren and attend their son’s church. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June. Asked the secret to a long, happy marriage, Wilson jokes, “I always get the last word – ‘yes, ma’am.’” Send your suggestions for Van Buren County Volunteers to voiceeditor@ artelco.com or call 745-8040.

MAKING DEFENSE GREAT AGAIN Jacket defense stout in shutout against Berryville Story & stats by Jeremy Carson

pd.pol.ad

In front of a patriotic student section honoring America and 9/11, the Clinton Yellow Jackets started their season 2-0 for the first time since 2011 following a 34-0 shutout win over the Berryville Bobcats this past Friday night. The clean sheet by the defense was the first also since the 2014 season, when Clinton defeated Dover 14-0 in a deluge. Berryville won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. On the fourth play from scrimmage, Bobcat fullback Jacob Graham burst through the left side of the line for an apparent long touchdown run. However, an illegal procedure penalty wiped out that play, and Berryville would be unable to pick up a subsequent first down. Clinton took over possession at the Bobcat 44-yard line, and promptly drove down the field in six plays. Wyatt McCoy scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 1-yard run over the right guard. Johnathan Ochoa’s extra point was good, and Clinton had a 7-0 lead.

Senior Wyatt McCoy scored three touchdowns Friday night. (Photo by Abi Leonard)

Berryville was able to pick up one first down on its next possession, but Graham would be stopped behind the line of scrimmage by Cort Bagley and Caleb Bowman. Facing third and long, Charleston Sowell broke up a pass from quarterback Luke Britt to receiver Wyatt Poe to force a punt. The Yellow Jacket offense would feature quarterback Kort Weaver directing a 10-play drive

that spanned 69 yards, capped off by McCoy’s second 1-yard touchdown run. Weaver completed 4 passes on that drive, including a 26-yard toss to Chase Cooley. Ochoa would tack on the extra point to extend the Clinton lead to 14. Clinton’s defense held tough again on Berryville’s next drive, See Defense on page 7

Team captains for the game were Kort Weaver, Johnathan Ochoa, Chase Cooley, and Dalton Hoyle… Ochoa keyed several big runs as a pulling guard with huge downfield blocks… Weaver’s only incompletion was his first of the season (he is now 8 of 9 passing on the season)… Nate Lonnon took snaps at quarterback late in the second half. Lonnon started 6 games at QB last season following injuries to Weaver and Kannon Bradley… Michael Smith received his first 7 carries of the 2016 campaign after a heavy workload during the scrimmage at Pottsville… Charleston Sowell recorded 5 tackles on special teams… For the second straight game, Clinton has excelled at converting 3rd and long (6 or more yards) situations

Football Fever Clinton Yellow Jackets 2016 classmen. The only drama over the last 17 minutes of the contest would be if Berryville would score. The Bobcats penetrated deep into the Yellow Jacket red zone,

Defense from page 6 forcing a punt after the Bobcats picked up one first down. Clinton would penetrate deep into Bobcat territory, but an illegal blocking penalty backed the Jackets into a 1st and 31 situation from the Berryville 35 yard line. McCoy picked up 13 tough yards on first down, then Weaver would dodge and duck his way toward the five yard line on an 18-yard keeper. McCoy would finish the drive off with a five-yard touchdown run. Ochoa’s extra point was good, and the Jackets headed to halftime with a 21-0 lead. Berryville needed a stop to start the second half to have a chance to get back in the game. Bradley Amos made sure that didn’t happen on the kickoff. Amos fumbled the kickoff, but gathered the ball in and found a lane up the right sideline for an 83-yard touchdown. Ochoa’s extra point attempt was no good, but the Jackets would stay firmly in control of the game. Dalton Hoyle finished out the scoring, finding pay dirt from 13 yards out with 5:41 to go in the third quarter. That run finished off an 8 play, 69-yard drive. Ochoa’s extra point was good to give the Jackets a 34-0 lead. Coach Chris Dufrene used the insurmountable lead to get reps for several under-

but running back Jake Summers was stopped on 4th and goal just short of the goal line by Sowell and Mason Dowell. With less than a minute to go, the Bobcats had another chance to score, but the Jacket secondary forced a quarterback scramble that ended the game and kept the shutout intact.

Leading the way defensively was Sowell with 10 stops. Sky Davidson recorded 6 tackles, while JoJo Jones recovered a Bobcat fumble. The Jackets limited Berryville to 200 total yards on 51 plays. The Bobcats were also only 2 of 10 on 3rd down conversions, and 0 for 2 in the red zone. On offense, Weaver completed 6 of 7 passes for 65 yards. He also had rushes of 13 and 18 yards. Bryce Brawner caught two passes for 32 yards to lead the receiving corp. Ten different Yellowjacket backs carried the football, led by Davidson (7 carries, 81 yards) and McCoy (9 carries, 49 yards, 3 TDs). Following the game, Coach Dufrene pointed out the Jackets cleaned up some areas from the previous week, notably the penalties. After being penalized 12 times last week, the Jackets only drew 5 flags. The Jackets will face 4A powerhouse Central Arkansas Christian on the road next Friday night in North Little Rock. The Mustangs fell to Joe T Robinson this past week, but feature a dynamic Quarterback and receiving duo. Game time is 7 pm. The game will be broadcast on KHPQ 92.1 with Jeff Hall and Mike Hawley calling the action. The broadcast is set to start at 6:55 p.m.

Ode to Betty Pate, 1929-2011 By Alma Wallace

Thelma Murray Shirley

Tim DeWild had surgery to correct a problem with his throat and nasal passage last Monday in Conway. Paul and Wanda Poynor went to Russellville on Saturday and had lunch with their daughter Carol Freeman and her son Dakota of Dover, and Shawnea Freeman and her sons Payton and Bentley of Fort Smith. Thelma Murray is heading for Kokomo, Indiana, on Tuesday.

A lifelong educator who earned her advanced degrees from the University of Central Arkansas, Betty Pate taught in the Leslie, Marshall, Searcy, Clinton, and Conway Public School Districts during her career. I learned how to sew during three years of Home Ec classes at Clinton High School beginning in 1959 with Mrs. Pate as the teacher. Fifty-seven years later, I'm still sewing and enjoying every minute of it, and I give her all the credit for inspiring my love of creating something out of flat fabric and spools of thread, a craft that unfortunately isn't that popular among kids these days. I know people who can't mend a ripped seam or even sew on a button, and it makes me sad for what they are missing out on.

Thanks to everybody for all the help and wonderful desserts. We could not have done it without all of you and the volunteers. You all help us continue our programs. What kid of a day trip would you suggest we take this fall to see the beautiful colors and have lunch somewhere? Call me at (501) 2530042 or your center director with your suggestions. Class B felony. Her pretrial was set for Oct. 21 with a trial date of Nov. 8. - Pamela Lee, 48, also rejected a plea offer and will go to trial on a charge of possession of a controlled substance, meth-cocaine. Her trial date is Jan. 17, 2017. - Co-defendants Tawesap Vuthivicha and Timothy Clois Coop will be back in court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 21. Vuthivicha is charged with residential burglary, a Class B felony, and resisting arrest, disorderly conduct,

All my friends and female family members sewed back then, making most of our own clothes and also for our kids; plus "home dec" projects such as curtains, bedspreads, pillows and quilts. It was a big part of life in the ‘50s and ‘60s to make what you needed. Mrs. Pate was a perfectionist, every stitch had to be perfect or it had to be ripped out, however many times it took to get it right. Every seam had to be pressed before any other stitching could cross it, so many trips to the ironing board during the process of any project which still is critical to a professional look in a finished garment. The classic construction techniques taught in her classes were important lessons to learn and are still the way I sew everything today. I'm horrified to see the sloppy work on some drinking in public and carrying a weapon, all misdemeanors. Coop is charged with residential burglary, a Class B felony, and possession of a controlled substance, schedule III, disorderly conduct and drinking in public, all misdemeanors. - Connie Ward, 50, will be back in court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 21. She is charged with possession of a controlled substance meth-cocaine, a Class D felony, possession of drug paraphernalia meth-cocaine, a Class D felony, and possession of a controlled substance schedule VI, a misdemeanor.

imported items in stores, it's like nobody involved in the production cares about quality - they didn't have a Mrs. Pate to teach them how to match plaids for instance. I think of Mrs. Pate with a smile every time I sit down at my sewing machine with silent thanks for instilling in me the same desire for perfection that she had. I still rip out stitches as needed for a per-

September 13, 2016 fect seam and never get in a hurry or frustrated, at my age it's all done for fun with no deadlines. And even after all these years I still strive to make every stitch and seam and finished item worthy of her approval just as if she were looking over my shoulder. Life can never be boring at any age as long as there's a stack of fabric waiting to be transformed into something usable or beautiful, a garment or toy or quilt block. I recently decided to see if I could locate Mrs. Pate to send a

Betty Pate long-overdue letter of gratitude, and learned she had passed away in 2011 at age 82. I was very sorry I had waited too long. So I decided to write this up in case other of her students have their own stories to tell.

Sound-Off

Here is your chance to say what you think about issues and politics. We usually don’t encourage political letters, but for the months of August and September, we invite your opinions. We have to know who the letters are from in case we have questions, but we won’t print your name. To those who say anonymity should not be allowed, we say neither should intimidation. In October, we offer the politicians their turn to respond to anything that has been written about them and to make their case as to why they deserve your support. So, come on, Van Buren County – sound off!

Awaiting results In January 2015 a new mayor was elected to the city of Clinton and brought new ideas and the hope of a positive direction for our city. Most departments in the city seem to be doing a good job with good department leadership and employees. However, during the first year with our new mayor and City Council, the problems with the Water and Sewer Department were continually addressed with no resolution. Mayor McCormac hired new Water and Sewer Manager Todd Burgess, who took his position in January 2016 to improve the department and its financial situation. Now in the ninth month of this year with Mr. Burgess as manager, we seem to be in worse

shape than ever. The water rate increase has been discussed for months (if not years) at each council meeting yet no vote has ever been taken. Can Mr. Burgess be found in his office taking care of city business? Bills are still not being paid on time. Decisions are not being made. I ask the mayor and City Council, is Todd Burgess doing the job you hired him to do? When will decisions be made in order to keep our water in the hands of our city and not in the hands of the bond company? Again, I am thankful for the city employees that are doing their jobs with the best interest of our community. And I am thankful for good water!

Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule — and both commonly succeed, and are right.

Trump this Here are just a few suggestions for Donald Trump appointees if we are so stupid (sorry, no other word will fit) as to elect him: Supreme Court: Judge Judy. She’ll make some great, great decisions. Department of Defense: Sylvester Stallone. You have seen the Rambo movies, haven’t you? Secretary of Labor: Michelle Duggar. Hey, she’s had 20 or so kids, so she knows a lot about labor! She would be really, really

terrific in that job. Education Department: Pink Floyd, after all, “We don’t need no education.” Agriculture Department: Won’t need this one anymore, only losers get dirt under their fingernails. Commerce Department: Xing Houyuan. Trump ties and suits are made in China anyway, so just let them handle trade. Secretary of State: Vladimir Putin, Trump’s man crush. Two really, really brilliant men.

Sign of the times

An election is coming. Universal peace is declared, and the foxes have a sincere interest in prolonging the lives of the poultry.

Hooper was seen by many helping Ellis put up his signs. So – Bradley puts up Hooper signs, Hooper puts up Ellis signs. I think they are all confused! Is it Bradley Hooper and Roger Ellis? Who knows! The VBC Democratic Party Facebook page says, “We are One.” So, if you vote for one,

you get them all? Hillary-Bradley-Hooper-Ellis? I assume that is why they do everything together – same parade float, same boat, same sign posts. Same, same, same. Bradley campaigns for Hooper and Ellis. Hooper campaigns for Ellis and Bradley. What’s going on here? Sorry, I’ll vote Republican!

Just a paycheck? The citizens of Van Buren County deserve fair, honest, unbiased and hard-working leadership from our elected officials. In my opinion, we don’t have that with our current sheriff. Mr. Bradley, I believe you have lost interest in serving the citizens of this county. I say that is because I have seen you several times over the last couple of years, and you have a look on your face like you are mad at the world. You have blurred the line between your elected position and your personal life. You have seen your supporters dwindling during this election period, and either you or your family members have felt the need to reach out to some of your ex-supporters, and say things like, "I thought we were friends" and "Did we do something to make you mad?" You and your family have even unfriended and blocked some of those people on social media. I am hearing the term "intimidation" being thrown around. This is a sign of poor sportsmanship and a sore loser. When that happens, it just shows that you aren't interested in serving the citizens of this county any longer. You are only interested in your paycheck. There are some real problems with your department that really concern me, and I will list them below. First, on June 22, 2016, there were two arrests made at the Murphy gas station by your county officer for drugs and a firearm in a vehicle – a female driver and a male passenger. The male passenger was taken to the VBC Detention Center. The female driver was taken to Faulkner County Juvenile Lockup, only after the on-call Drug Task Force Officer, and on-call Juvenile Intake Officer were called. This could all be heard on the police scanner. The driver appeared to have charges that night. However, in your "press release" on your website, her name is not listed, and it doesn't even say that she was arrested. Should one surmise that her involvement was "brushed under the rug," so to speak, especially since she is related to some Drug Task Force officers? Second, on July 1, 2016, there was a so-called "walking away" (correct word for that is “escape”) of a TRUSTEE from the detention center, reported in your press release to have happened between 1:30 and 5:00 a.m. Also,

between those hours, there was an ambulance stolen from Southern Paramedic in Clinton. Now, this can only mean one thing. Your jailers didn't check on the trustees between those hours. The stolen ambulance was found behind Walnut Grove Church with nothing missing out of it, and the escaped inmate was captured nearby. That means that the inmate escaped, stole an ambulance, and made it halfway to Scotland, ditched the ambulance and got to a residence, all before anyone knew he was missing. And, it's been said that employees were told to "keep it quiet." Do you really think that helps the escape look any better, or not so bad, by not informing the public of the stolen ambulance in your press release? Do you really think the county citizens are that stupid? If you do, that only proves my point that you aren't interested in anything except a paycheck. All of this was also broadcasted over the radio, and is recorded. Third, in your press release on August 2, 2016, you speak about a jail incident involving key lime pie soap, that your jailer gave to a couple of inmates to eat. I'm sure they were just playing around, but a jail is no place for an immature jailer to be playing around. And fourth, there was the incident of an employee giving, or selling, an e-cigarette to an inmate who then swallowed it. I just have a couple of questions about that incident. Why are inmates allowed to have an item that can kill them if they swallow it, and what repercussions did this employee receive? Was it not her responsibility to make sure the e-cigarette was used appropriately? The Drug Task Force has its own set of problems. They find some trumped-up reason to fire an officer, and guess who ends up filling that position? How many members of the task force are related? Just a couple more questions: 1. Is this how you want to keep the county moving forward? 2. Is this the proven record you are so proud of? It's time for the citizens of this county to wake up and realize what is going on in our sheriff's department. I will be anxiously awaiting your answers. And in November, I will “Vote Emberton.”

Fishing Report

Bluegill

Common Names - bream, blue bream, sun perch, blue sunfish, copperhead, copperbelly, roach.

Central Arkansas

Lake Conway

(updated 9-72016) Bates Field and Stream (501-4701846) said water is clear and at a normal level. Bream are good, and worms and crickets are bringing bites. Crappie are good on minnows and jigs. Reports on bass were just fair, with spinnerbaits and topwater baits working best. Catfishing is fair.

Little Red River (Greers Ferry Tailwater)

(updated 9-72016) Greg Seaton with Little Red Fly Fishing Trips (501-6909166) said fishing was good over the holiday weekend. The generation was stepped up to 9 a.m. on Saturday but it had dropped back to 11 a.m. on Tuesday and was forecast for 10 a.m. on Wednesday. With the earlier generation mid- and lower river was the best choice. Staying ahead of the new water is the best bet for a good catch. Greg said his fishermen are having good catches of rainbows with a few browns. There is a blue-winged olive hatch in the afternoons just ahead of the generation. The fish are taking nymphs and emergers. Pheas-

Page 13

ant tails, fox squirrel nymphs, hare’s ear nymphs and midge pupas are good choices in small sizes (16 to 20s).

Greers Ferry

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 464 1 feet msl (normal conservation pool – 461.44 msl). (updated 9-72016) Tommy Cauley of Fish Finder Guide Service said the hybrid and white bass bite are both good with some schooling fish doing their thing at various places and times all over the lake. Some are roaming and some are staying on structure. The spoon bite is really picking up as well as topwaters, in-line spinners and various other baits are working. The bream are still doing well on crickets and crawlers in real shallow water out to about 20 feet now. Catfish are more active than a couple of weeks ago. Use your favorite bait for whichever species you prefer close to deep water on flats. The crappie are eating Road Runners and jigs, as well as minnows in the pole timber suspended in 10-18 feet of water. Many walleye are roaming under the hybrids and white bass,

eating what they spit up, but others are eating crawlers in 12-28 feet of water. The bass fishing is picking up in the shallow water with the cooler weather on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and jigs. The deeper fish can be caught with C-rigs and Texas rigs, as well as drop shots.

Harris Brake Lake

(updated 9-72016) Harris Brake Lakeside Resort (501889-2745) said catfishing was slower this week but there were still reports of fair numbers of catches and nice size catfish. The water at the resort is clear. Bream are biting well on crickets. Crappie fishing is good on minnows and jigs. Good reports of bass on spinnerbaits, crankbaits and topwater lures.

Lake Overcup

(updated 9-72016) Johnny “Catfish” Banks at Overcup Bait Shop and R.V. Park (501-3549007) said water level is still high, about 1.5 feet above normal. Clarity is good, temperature is 87. Crappie are picking up in 11 feet of water, fishing 6-8 feet, using minnows. Bass are slow but still chasing shad late evening and early morning. Bream are slow 10-15 feet off bank in 3-4 feet of water, using crickets. Catfish are doing fair on jugs, Yo-Yo’s and lines, using shad, rice slicks and nightcrawlers. Banks says, “Come enjoy our little slice of HEAVEN” off state Highway 9.

Lake Maumelle

(updated 9-72016) Fosters Four Seasons (501-8689061) said fishing is still good, with the water clarity clear and at a normal level. Bream are good on worms and crickets. Crappie rated good on minnows and jigs. The bass bite is good, with anglers using spinnerbaits, crankbaits and topwater lures. Catfishing is good; try chicken livers or cut bait.

Norfork Lake

As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 554.24 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April – 553.75 msl, April-September – 552.00 msl). (updated 9-72016) Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters said the Norfork Lake stripers are being inconsistent. One day it’s fast and furious, then the next day it’s very slow. The weather last week as was up and down; we started off hot and then it turned cold. The water temperature dropped 8 degrees with a north wind, and now this week it will be hot with a south wind. Fishing should get back to a heavy bite early in the morning and in the late afternoon. The fish are still in 32-35 feet of water early, then move out to deeper water feeding on shad. I have found them in 4080 feet of water after 8 a.m. If you hit a school of stripers, they will hit every line. The fish can be found near the dam. Start looking at all the

Business Directory Put Your Business in this Directory voiceads@artelco.com

points within a mile of the dam and you will find them feeding before light. Walleyes are being caught on points and flats using bottom bouncers and spoons in 28-35 feet of water. The best live bait this past week for stripers has been gizzard shad.

North Fork River (Norfork Tailwater)

(updated 9-72016) John Berry at Berry Brothers Guide Service (870453-2424) said Norfork Lake fell 0.1 feet to rest at 1.5 feet below seasonal power pool of 555.75 feet and 25.7 feet below the top of flood pool. On the Norfork, we had reliable wadable water every morning, with light generation in the afternoon. The Norfork has fished better on the lower water and has not been as crowded with wadable water on the White. The most productive flies have been small midge patterns (sizes 18, 20, 22) like ruby midges, root beer midges, zebra midges (black or red with silver wire and silver bead) and soft hackles (sizes 14, 16) like the Green Butt. Egg patterns have also been productive. Double fly nymph rigs have been very effective. Try a small bead headed nymph (zebra midge, copper John or pheasant tail) suspended 18 inches below a brightly colored San Juan worm (hot fluorescent pink or cerise size 10). There have been reliable hatches of small midges (try a size 24 Adams parachute) and caddis (try a size

18 elk hair caddis). The fishing is better in the morning. My favorite fly has been the Green Butt. Dry Run Creek has been less crowded with school back in session. It has fished a bit better and is yielding some trophy trout. The hot flies have been sowbugs (size 14), Y2Ks (size 12) and various colored San Juan worms (worm brown, red, hot fluorescent pink and cerise size 10).

Buffalo National River

(updated 9-72016) Berry Brothers Guide Service (870453-2424) said that with the weather warming, smallmouths are more active. John Berry's favorite fly is a Clouser minnow. Carefully check the water level before entering the river. There are no dams and the river is prone to flooding during and following any rain event. The water can rise very quickly.

Crooked Creek

(updated 9-72016) John Berry of Berry Brothers Guide Service (870453-2424) said the river is navigable. Try John Berry's favorite lure for smallmouths, the Clouser minnow. Carefully check the water level before entering. There are no dams, there are large drainages and the creek prone to flooding during and following any rain event. The water can rise very quickly.

Tire talk Salesman Jeffrey Wells of Southern Tire Mart in Searcy visited Mainstreet Kids in Shirley on Sept. 6 to teach them a little about tires. He let the kids feel new and buffed tires, and told them about retreading. He also brought the students and staff lots of goodies!

Master Gardeners

Story & photo by Cynthia Lacken

Ed Leamon Park’s rose garden in Fairfield Bay is one of the most popular spots for a leisurely stroll or quiet contemplation. There are 62 rose plants of every color and size imaginable. Earlier this year, blooms were the size of dinner plates. It is our privilege to care for these amazing plants. But we have noticed a disturbing trend - someone is “poaching” our roses. Please stop and smell the roses, but don’t touch them, cut them or pick them.

Local artists exhibit work at Laman Library Carol Corning and Ed Pennebaker will exhibit their recent mixed media artwork and sculpture in the William F. Public Laman Library System Gallery Sept. 12 through Nov. 4, 2016. Corning has been working on a series of works that portray life from the 1950s and 1960s in rural Arkansas. Pennebaker’s work is a series of sculptures entitled “Formations.” The series of works by Corning began a few years ago with a kitchen scene Corning made for her then 94-year-old mother entitled “Mama’s Kitchen.” Some examples of other scenes in the series include "Poker Night," "Playing Dominos” and “Cold Morning Warm Kitchen.” Fused glass and found objects are the media used in Corning’s works. She will also show some fused glass works that depict quilt patterns since her mother, Adelia Corning was an avid quilter. Pennebaker's recent works are from a series of abstractions from nature that seek to capture the formal

relationships of various geological formations, geometry, and light. The works in the series use glass, steel, and a variety of stone. A reception for the exhibit will take place Sept. 23, 6-8 p.m., at the Laman Library Gallery, 2801 Orange St., North Little Rock, Arkansas. Pennebaker and Corning met in 2009 when Corning's Fresh Air Art Gallery started showing Pennebaker's work. They were married in 2013. Corning and Pennebaker reside in Clinton, Arkansas, where she teaches art at Clinton High School. Corning was born in Clinton and grew up near Bee Branch. After attending South Side Schools, she ended up in banking for 19 years before going back to school and earning her B.A. in fine art in 2003. She was recognized by the North Central Arkansas Foundation for the Arts and Education in 2004 for making a difference in her community. As a graduate of the LeadAR program she has worked for the Main Street program in

Clinton and was working for the Gates Roger Foundation when she was included in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette's edition of "Twenty Women to Watch" in 2006. Her work can be viewed online at carolcorning. com. Pennebaker was born in Kansas and studied art at Emporia State University where he received a B.F.A. and an M.A. with an emphasis in printmaking. After working as an Artistin-the-Schools and at Hale Farm and Village in Ohio as a glass blower, Pennebaker moved to Arkansas where he established Red Fern Glass in Salem, Arkansas, in 1985. The studio was moved to its present location near Osage in Carroll County in 1991. Early American Life magazine included Pennebaker in its listing of top traditional craftsmen from 1987 to 2000 when he discontinued his line of traditional items. He has been honored with a Lifetime Achievement award from the Arkansas Craft Guild. Pennebaker's website is redfernglass.com.

Don’t forget our upcoming free Master Gardener program Sept. 20 in Clinton. The program, by Master Gardener Marguerite Dory, is on pollinator friendly plants for the declining bee population. The program will be at the Van Buren County Clinton Library from noon to 1 p.m. Bring a sack lunch and join the Gardeners. For more information about Master Gardeners call Mary Lou Horvath, president, at 884-6934.
