Supreme Court to convene in Clinton The Arkansas Supreme Court will conduct oral argument at the Clinton High School Auditorium on Thursday, April 13, 2017, as part of its bi-annual “Appeals on Wheels” program. The public is welcome to attend the argument of CV-16-

545, Department of Arkansas State Police v. Keech Law Firm. “Appeals on Wheels” is a Supreme Court outreach program designed to educate students and community members about the role of the Judicial Branch.

Amendment 80 to the Arkansas Constitution, adopted by public vote in 2000, provides that the Supreme Court may meet at such times and places as designated by the court. Since that time, the Supreme Court has held oral argument

twice each year at difference locations across the state. This is the first time the court has come to Clinton, which is the hometown of Justice Karen Baker. The oral argument will begin promptly at 10 a.m. and attendees are encouraged

to arrive early. Following the oral argument, the justices will speak with students in smaller groups to answer questions about the roles and responsibilities of judges and the judicial process.

JR and I attended a birthday party for my cousin, Paul Meyner, on Saturday. About 25 people attended. Those from out of town were Greg Treece, Kelly, Renae and Blake Merrell of Pea Ridge and Wanda and Dewayne Thompson of Bentonville. It was good to see everyone, but not enough visiting time. Margie Pounds’ visitors over the weekend were her daughter, Jacque and Earnie Hennington and grandson, Cole Hennington; and her great-grandchildren Aurora and Logan of Fort Smith. On Sunday their dad, Kyle Hennington, came to take them home. Margie enjoyed the visit very much. Sindee and David Morse, Marva and RG Ward, Frankie, Erica, Rylan and Landon Ward all went camping at Daisy State Park on Lake Greeson, located near Kirby, Arkansas. It is also not far from Murfeesboro, so all except Marva went digging for diamonds. They had their 4-wheelers, so they all enjoyed a few days of riding them. They also went on a cruise of the lake on a party barge and enjoyed See Neighbors on page 5

Correction: The catalpa tree that lost to the March 1 storm in downtown Clinton was 13.4 feet in circumference, 4 feet 3 inches in diameter. Last week’s paper reversed those numbers, and one person offered that it was because the editor is “geometrically challenged.” We can’t really argue that point.

Alread news

There’s a lot going on in Alread this spring. The Alread EH Club will host a supper and bingo starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 8. One of the prizes will be a kidsize quilt, hand made by the Alread quilters, who meet every Thursday. The quilters have recently moved their starting time to 8 a.m. instead of 10:30. The exercise class has also changed its schedule to Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9 to 10:30 instead of only Tuesday and Thursday. The following weekend, April 15, will see the annual community Easter Egg Hunt at the Alread Park, with separate egg hunts for the little ones and the bigger kids starting at 11, and followed by a picnic lunch. This event is sponsored by all five of the Alread community organizations: EH, ACCDA, ACRDC, the Alread Fire Department and the Pleasant Grove Cemetery volunteers. And if that’s not enough, the weekend after that, April 22, is Earth Day, celebrated annually in Alread with a community-wide road cleanup. Anyone willing to do their share is invited to arrive at the park at 9 a.m. to pick up some orange trash bags, and then after a job well done, to come back for a potluck lunch, followed by a horseshoe tournament. Everyone is welcome to join any or all of these events.

Applications available for M*A*S*H camps Applications are now available to high school students for the summer M*A*S*H (Medical Applications of Science for Health) camps. These camps will be located at 32 medical facilities throughout Arkansas. The camp in Clinton is set for June 5-16. The two-week M*A*S*H camps are designed to expose rising high-school juniors and seniors to healthcare-related

vocations. “The M*A*S*H program gives students an inside look at various medical professions and is designed to spark students’ interest in the medical field,” said Jennifer Victory, Director of Rural Health for Arkansas Farm Bureau. “A large number of the camps are held at rural medical centers and attract local students with a rural

background.” “The idea is that future medical students from a rural background are more likely to return to their roots,” said Victory. Applications are available through school guidance counselors, by contacting the M*A*S*H director in your area or by visiting www. arkansashealthcareers.com/summer-camps/.

Lost & found at thrift store The Methodist

Thrift Store is trying to find two customers from Thursday, March 23, who dropped some money as they checked out. The two women could not be recognized from the video recorder, but one of them had a cane. If this was you, store personnel asks that you return to the shop to verify your claim. Also, the thrift store would like to remind everyone that they do have a camera at the back of the building recording people leaving bikes, old television sets and other electronics. The store does not accept those items, so please do not leave them.

Doris Brown, Calla Linn, Myrtle Smith and Jo Trawick visit after lunch at Fairfield Bay last week. Neighbors from page 2 seeing the beauty of the place. Frankie and Erica did the cooking over the campfire with their cast iron cookware. Marva says they cooked up some good eats! Larry, Lori, Retha and Dakota Brock went down and spent one day with them. On Friday they all went to Glenwood to The Fish Nest for dinner. Then they had a big storm Friday night! They had a few incidents, but they were all glad to get back home. Marva and Sue Stamper went to the Senior Center in Clinton for lunch one day this week. She reported a nice time and plans to go back. Get well wishes to Deniece Sikes, she is having some post-op

problems. Hope she is better soon. Ann Mann went to Kennett, Missouri, and spent a week with her mom. When she got back home she and her kids and grandkids all went to San Antonio, Texas, to visit Sea World. On the way home they stopped at Magnolia Market in Waco and did some shopping. DeLane Story went to Virginia to visit her son, David and Pinyan Story and granddaughter Sarah and James Bartells. She attended the wedding of her grandson, Joey Story and Heather Powers. She reports a different but really nice wedding, personalized just for the couple. The wedding was the main reason she made the trip. That’s all for now, call if you have news. Have a great week, God bless.

Write it down Did you know that you are twice as likely to reach your weight loss goals if you keep a food journal? Start by writing down everything you eat during the week. You probably don't realize how much you actually do eat. Small things can feel like nothing at the time, but they all add up. Writing down what I was eating helped me stay honest with myself, and helped me evaluate if I was eating because I was hungry, or just because the food was in front of me. Keeping a food

Geri’s Fit Tips journal makes you more mindful of what you eat, helps to keep you focused on your diet, makes it easier to evaluate your eating patterns and habits and gives you the opportunity to make better decisions, which is the primary reason it works – No mindless eating. The more you think about it, the better you eat. So grab a pen and paper and write it down!

It was quite a thrill when I tried to pick up the 14-inch grey snake thinking it was just another stick in the yard. It's the time of year to be more mindful about such things. I also noted 100s of mosquito larva wiggling around in a bucket of water. Eliminating such breeding places can depress their populations in your area. The King’s Highway Louis Dawson and I have been friends for over eight years, and I have enjoyed listening to The King's Highway on many occasions. They always have a fresh sound and their music is spiritually uplifting. They sing southern gospel/ country gospel music and have influences from gospel groups like the McKameys and the Hinsons. When I talked with Louis Dawson at his business, Dawson Music and Recording Studio in Clinton, he told me he began singing with folks from his church, Friendship Baptist, and they were known as Silver Creek. This group at one time or another included singers Karen Lawson, Clarence

Philips, Janette Emerson, Bernice Erby, John Wickman on keyboard, Ron Hains on guitar. Louis Dawson played bass guitar and sang with them. As members moved and other events occurred, the group dissolved. Louis Dawson gradually lost his eyesight and is now blind; but back when he could see, he was traveling with his wife down Highway 65 going from Conway, and was south of Damascus, Arkansas, when he was thinking about the group The Kingsmen. It was then that the name The King's Highway came to his mind, and when he introduced it to the band, everyone seemed to like it. Louis Dawson

formed The King's Highway with Mark Gammill, and they are the only two charter members of the band that remain. The band with its current members has been together for approximately 23 years, and has played from Clinton to Branson, Missouri, all over the area and other parts of the country. They recently played at Bee Branch Baptist Church and are scheduled to play at the outdoor amphi-theater in Fairfield Bay on June 9. The King's Highway is also planning on recording a live concert in Mount Ida soon. Mark Gammill, lead guitarist and singer for the group since its inception, has written a fascinating in-depth biog-

raphy of the King's Highway. Here is his story. Mark Gammill: Louis and I met in 1988 after my family moved to Clinton. We began attending Friendship Baptist Church and I got to know Louis there. He played bass guitar for the church so I found someone in Clinton who liked to play music. I would go to his studio and play music with him as well as an occasional special at church. He began to talk to others in the church who were interested in forming a group. The first King's Highway group came from Friendship Baptist Church with the exception of the drummer who was from Quitman and one of our vocalists who came from the Leslie area. Louis and I are the only charter members left in the group. We began to have personnel changes shortly after the

group's beginning. We lost a female vocalist. Louis had met Shiela Farmer at his studio and I had hired her as teacher at Cowsert Elementary School where I was principal. He called me and said that he met someone named Shiela Farmer who was interested in the group. I laughed and told him that I knew her, she worked for me. We were excited to have her and she has been with King's Highway 21 years. We have traveled as far south as San Antonio, Texas, and as far Northwest as Montana. We traveled to San Antonio in a six-vehicle caravan. Just south of Dallas on I-35, the straps on my luggage carrier broke and the luggage carrier blew off of the top of my Jeep Cherokee onto I-35. I was the lead vehicle and I pulled off to the side of the interstate as did everyone behind me. We ran onto the interstate, grab-

Editor’s pick This week, I’ve been listening to a singer/songwriter gone too soon. Jim Croce was only 30 when he died in a plane crash in September 1973 in Natchitoches, Louisiana. He had already had several hits, including “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” that made it to No. 1 on the charts in July 1973, but he was really just starting to come into his own. His death left a question of what might have been; just how big would he have become? Croce had a lot of good

bing luggage that had scattered on the interstate, dodging cars and tractor-trailer trucks. When we finished gathering luggage, we noticed that there was a pasture to our right. There were several head of cattle in that field who had walked up to the fence and were looking at us. The cattle seemed to be thinking that the humans were crazy for running onto the interstate with all that traffic buzzing by. We had a good laugh at the end of that ordeal. We had been invited to play at Harrison, Arkansas, not long after we started. We went early and stopped to eat together before our program. I ordered steak and the salad bar had just put out fresh green onions. I cannot resist eating green onions. We See Music on page 7

songs in his short career, “Operator,” “You Don’t Mess Around with Jim,” “Time in a Bottle” among them. My favorite was “I Got a Name,” which wasn’t written by Croce but was the last song he performed before stepping into a small plane on a foggy night. With lines like “They can change their minds, but they can’t change me …” and “Like the fool I am and I’ll always be, I’ve got a dream …” it’s thought-provoking and heart-breaking, much like the singer himself.

Graduates training – Michael Chalk, a 2012 graduate of Clinton High School, has graduated from Department of Corrections training and is a correctional officer at the Ouachita River Unit in Malvern. Chalk lives with his wife, Nikki, and son Garrett in Hot Springs. He is the son of Jeff and Julie Jackson, grandson of Kim and Dan Chalk and nephew of Mike Chalk, all of Clinton. See Music on page 7 traveled to our destination to play and sing. As fate would have it, my microphone went dead and we could not fix it. I had to share a microphone with one of the female vocalists who is no longer with us. She had the funniest look on her face when we sang harmony at the same time. At the end of the program, she announced to the group, "Mark cannot eat onions again before we sing!" That announcement brought about a moment of laughter to everyone there. We lost another female vocalist sev-

eral years ago. I had hired Becky Wood to teach for me at Clinton Junior High School. Louis had met Becky at his studio and again called me and said that he had talked to Becky and she would be interested in joining the group. I laughed and told Louis that she worked for me at school. Could you say "deja vu"? Becky is now learning to play drums for the group due to Weston's absence. We were needing a new drummer. Drummers are hard to find - especially for gospel music. All of the King's family were friends with the David Smith fam-

David and Connie worked for Clinton Schools as well as myself, Becky and Shiela. Weston Smith was 14 years old and one of my students at CJHS. He also played drums for the Clinton High School Marching Yellow Jacket Band. We invited Weston to join us and he did. Weston played with us for eight years. He has decided that he is going to go into law enforcement for a career and is currently in training at the Law Enforcement Academy at Camden, Arkansas. Weston is getting married to Lindsey Jade Steele in May. Weston will go

to work for the White County sheriff’s department as a deputy after he finishes training. His work schedule will not allow him to always be with King's Highway. That is why Becky is listed as playing guitar and drums, and why Darin Farmer is listed as playing guitar and working as our sound tech. Weston will play with the group when his schedule allows. He will be with us in the near future when we record a new CD while doing a concert at Mount Ida. Darin Farmer came to us as a package deal. Darin has been our sound tech for several years and is married to

Shiela Farmer, our keyboard player and vocalist. Darin now plays rhythm guitar for us when Becky plays the drums. Natalie Farmer, Darin and Shiela's daughter, sometimes joins King's Highway on stage. She sings and she does "sign" for one of the songs sung by King's Highway. The last member to join the group is Lyla Campora. Lyla moved to Clinton a few years ago from Mena, Arkansas. She is a talented vocalist and has written many gospel songs. Lyla is Shiela's mother and we have known her for several years before she moved to

Clinton. We would invite Lyla to come up on stage and sing a song with us during our concerts. Lyla was a natural fit for our band and we invited her to join us. Lyla sings the high harmony and we needed that vocal part. We have had several members come and go over the years. The current members of the King's Highway have been together longer than any other lineup that we have had over the 23-year history of the band. We are family. We have hurt together, we have celebrated together, and we enjoy serving Christ together.

Fishing Report Central Arkansas

Lake Conway

(updated 3-292017) Bates Field and Stream (501-4701846) said water conditions remain the same as they’ve been, stained to murky. Surface temperature is in the high 60s. Crappie are good on minnows or jigs. Bream reports have been good as well. Bass have been good using white spinners and plastic lizards. Catfishing is ranged from good to excellent. Try cut shad or minnows for the cats.

Little Red River (Greers Ferry Tailwater)

Unattended yo-yos a no-no at Lake Conway Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wildlife officers held a special operation recently on Lake Conway to remove illegally set yo-yos and investigate continued issues with passive fishing devices. Yoyos may be left unattended at night, but anglers using them during the day must remain within sight or sound of the device. Yo-yos also must be labeled with the owner’s name and address, driver’s license number or current vehicle license number. When abandoned, they can be a danger to fish, birds and oth-

er animals that become entangled in their lines or hooks. Capt. Matt Flowers, enforcement supervisor for central Arkansas, says he appreciates the reports from the public about the issue of abandoned fishing devices. “It’s safe to say we’ll be stepping up our efforts on a regular basis with this issue more in the future,” he said. Anyone who sees abandoned yo-yos or other fishing violations can call the enforcement hotline and leave an anonymous report. The number is 1-800-482-9262.

(updated 3-292017) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip ‘em All Guide Service said the Little Red is receiving heavy generation since the past weekend rains. When the water conditions are right and the weather is warm, they are seeing lots of caddis coming off on all sections of the river. For fly-fishing, Lowell recommends your favorite caddis fly, gold ribbed hare’s ear, pheasant tails, soft hackles, sowbugs and streamers. Pink and cotton-candy-colored Trout Magnet bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-362-5150)

Bass are fair on spinnerbaits or crankbaits around the shoreline. Catfishing is fair. Use worms or stink bait. No reports on white bass.
