Flu break
Due to increased flu cases, Clinton Schools had no students on Monday, February 5. All staff reported at 8:30 a.m. to clean and disinfect the campus. This was an AMI day. Students in Pre-K should have completed AMI Lesson 1, students in K-12 should have completed AMI Day 2 assignments. A week ear-
a great deal of damage to its front area, renter John Cole lost a lot of items inside and the driver’s vehicle sustained heavy damage. According to Clinton police, John Spill-
ane Jr., 38, of Shirley was driving a 2007 Chevrolet flatbed with a load of logs when he lost control and left the roadway about 7:45 p.m. Jan. 30, ending up in Cole’s yard. Spillane told po-
lice that he was near a curve on his way south when a northbound semi crossed the double yellow line and came into Spillane’s lane and hit his truck on the driver’s side, according to the
report. The semi, Spillane said, continued on without stopping. Searcy County officials kept an eye out for the truck but said they did not see it come through, ac-
cording to the police report. Clinton police reported that they examined the scene that night and again the next day and saw no evidence of another vehicle being involved.

10th annual dinner honors responders Around 150 people turned out on a chilly night Saturday to honor those who come running when they are needed. The 10th annual Emergency Responders dinner was held at the Clinton High School cafeteria. The food was free for all, the talks were short and sincere. The event is organized each year by the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows Aaron Lodge No. 4. This year, Millard Wagner along with his wife, Debby, was singled out for commendation. Honoring those who help is special to Wagner, who has been through four tornadoes. Van Buren County Judge Roger Hooper said Wagner appears in his office
every December to get the ball rolling for the February event. The dinner “gets bigger and better every year,” Hooper said. Earlier, Quorum Court member and Rescue Squad member Brian Tatum honored the county’s volunteer fire departments. “Volunteers don’t necessarily have the time,” Tatum said, “They have the heart.” A member of each fire department stepped forward to accept a trophy of appreciation. Fire department volunteers were not the only heroes honored Saturday. Police officers, even one from Quitman, deputies, drug task force agents and 911 dispatchers were also given their due.
County Judge Roger Hooper thanks Millard Wagner and his wife, Debby, for putting together the dinner every year. They are pictured with Jeana Williams of the county Office of Emergency Management.

Hotel work begins soon
Letters to the Editor
Fairfield Bay is about to get its first hotel, and from all indications it will be an impressive one. BD Alliance, LLC and DMC International, LLC both of Birmingham, Ala., and Fairfield Bay signed a deal for the development of a new 63-room, 4-story Cobblestone Hotel. Ground breaking is expected in February with an opening date set for fall 2018. It will be located at 100 Lost Creek Parkway, next to the Fairfield Bay Conference and Visitor Center and the mall area. Construction will be by BriMark Buliders of Neenah, Wisconsin, and will be operated by WHG Professional Hospitality Management. “As someone who attends many conferences, the Cobblestone Hotel will give Fairfield Bay a huge competitive advantage over midsize conference centers around Arkansas,” said Mayor Paul Wellenberger. “We already had superior food, a superior conference center, and a superior staff. Now we will have superior accommodations. … We’ll be poised to leapfrog into a commanding destination position.” Wellenberger said the hotel will have a direct impact on the economy with more than $1million annual revenue pouring into the local economy.

Clinton Dear Editor: I would like to express my gratitude to the five Supreme Court judges who ruled in favor of upholding the Constitution of Arkansas. The ruling will have a profound effect on our judicial system that continues to make decisions based on case law that fail to meet the constitutionality test. The writers of the U.S. Constitution and the Arkansas Constitution made sure it was fair and equal to the people it governs. This was insured by creating three branches of government – Executive, Legislative and Judicial, which are equal but separate. They work like this, the Legislature makes the laws, the Executive branches administer the law and Judicial Courts assure the statutes and Constitution are followed. Based on those assumptions, if any branch of government

Dena Malone was honored the the Municipal League’s conference. fails to do its job correctly, it falls to the other branches or to the federal system to correct. Let us look at how this may effect property owners, Ad Valorem taxpayers and current county legal problems. I have previously filed an illegal extraction suit and continue to file complaints with Equalization Board and County Court. My complaint is similar to the Southwestern Energy suit, being the gas price is wrong, but mine is that the tax is totally illegal. If the circuit court requires the Arkansas Assessment Coordination Department be included as a defendant, then the suit should be dismissed as unconstitutional. That will mean that the proper course of action is the Arkansas Claims Commission. This commission has other concerns because any judgment handed down by the commission must be approved by the General Assembly. Other issues with Ad Valorem tax suits at
county or district level is conflict of interest because the Circuit Courts are partly paid by the county and attorneys for the county can’t currently be representing royalty or property owners in quiet title disputes. that appears to be the conflicting interest. Sadly, the taxpayers, school districts and the county budget would have been better off if the ACD had issued proper procedures and had followed the constitution. Another possibility is that the ACD is called as a witness, then all the counties sued by SWN should be combined and moved to a county that would not be affected by their ruling. This Supreme Court ruling is “Huge” for property owners whose right to due process has been denied by previous rulings. Based on Arkansas Constitution Article 16 Section 6, it is clear no one can continue to own Real Property (including minerals) without paying ad valorem tax, so
no court ruling or statue can create a waiver. This means only active taxpayers, currently on the tax records of the county, can sign a lease or sell property. If anyone else does, those documents/transactions are void and if recorded it is a crime against the record property owner. Strangely, the Assessment Coordination Department website does not mention Article 16 Section 6 in its “History of Tax Laws,” but relies on Section 5 as the authority of the state to tax. Don’t be fooled by anyone or group attempting to change the Constitution. Richard Winfrey Bee Branch

I’m not talking about squabbles we had as kids, I’m talking about Canola oil. We have been told for some time now that we should use Canola oil to cook with because it is healthi-
er than other types, such as vegetable oil. Well, guess what … they were wrong. Turns out a recent study found out that Canola oil will cause weight gain and significantly increase your chances of getting Alzheimer’s dementia. That’s two strikes and Sandy Koufax is pitching. Stick to olive oil, which has been found to have the
greatest number of health benefits. I love Olive Oil and Popeye, so eat some spinach everyday as well. OK, so I misspelled Olive’s last name, it’s Oyl, big deal. For you millennials, Sandy Koufax was the greatest pitcher of all time and he played back in the 60’s, as did the cartoon characters, Popeye and Olive Oyl.

Holocaust survivor to speak at UACCM Peter Gorog will be the speaker at the 10th annual Holocaust Survivor Series event on March 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Auditorium at University of Arkansas Community College at Morrilton. Gorog — born Péter Grünwald on March 10, 1941, in Budapest — was only 3 months old when his father, Árpád, was taken to a forced labor camp in Hungary. He soon died in 1942 while at a labor battalion in Ukraine. Gorog was then supported by his mother,
Olga, a hat- maker. When the German forces invaded Hungary in March 1944, the country’s government ordered the Jews of Budapest to move into “csillagos ház,” meaning “houses marked with a yellow Star of David.” Afraid the houses would bring even worse discrimination, Olga and her son found refuge with a Christian friend, but were turned over to the military by a neighbor soon after. The two were arrested and jailed, but managed to escape
Gorog after only two days. By October 1944, the Red Cross party had gained control of the Hungarian government, and began a reign of terror against the Jews of Budapest. Ol-
ga and her son fled to the city’s ghettos and lived with his grandparents, two aunts and a cousin — all packed into a one-bedroom apartment. But in January 1945, the country was liberated by the Soviet army. Though having survived the terrors of World War II, Gorog changed his name in 1962 from Grünwald for fear of any lingering anti-Semitic attitudes. Gorog earned a Master of Science degree in electrical engineering and later participat-

Through the grace of God, there is hope Though we live in a world where there is much darkness, bitterness and distress, hope is always available for those who will take time to search the beauty of God’s blessings which He has placed before us all. A couple of years ago I had a gentleman make a comment while shaking hands after a Sunday morning service which really touched my heart and I’ve thought about it many times since. His comment was inspired of something I had said in the sermon that morning, but was something he had already been achieving for quite some time. He said, “People can always find the goodness of God if they will on-
ly open their eyes to see His blessings.” He also indicated that he enjoyed watching the news in search of the goodness of God. Though it may be difficult at times because the majority of people apparently want to see how corrupt this world is, therefore that’s what the media chooses to publish the most. But if we would only look through the darkness there is always a soft touch of hope written with the fingerprint of God. A couple of years ago as well, I received a strange phone call from a filmmaker who worked with HBO who indicated they were doing a documentary in this area about meth ad-
diction and recovery. My name had come up several times in regards to my deliverance from meth. I did several interviews with them indicating how God delivered me 12 years prior and they even filmed in our home as my family and I celebrated 13 years as a born-again believer and freedom from addiction. We also indicated to them given the interviews that we knew many people who had been delivered from meth, but only through the avenue of God’s amazing grace. We filmed with them on several occasions over a process of two years, always revealing to them on and off film how God was working mightily to set people free from meth and other addictions. They also had the opportunity to film firsthand our newly founded Friends Recovery Center Ministry, and yet after all the filming and interviews, it was very evident when the documentary “Meth Storm” was released that they where actually

only trying to reveal darkness and distress. The wonderful thing is that those who truly seek the truth will find it but only will they find it in the mercies and grace of God. Though the bitter distress of the world today will try to cover or steal all the joy and hope out of people’s hearts, God’s goodness is still actively working whether the media would like to share it or not. Hope is always attainable if we will only glance through the darkness and focus on the light of Christ. Most people will only believe what is presented right before them, but by Faith we can look through as a darkly shaded glass to see God’s blessings of hope still and will always stand. “Now Faith is the substance of things Hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1 KJV). Being still It always seems like we are constantly going ... Going to take the kids to school, going to pick them up from school, going to pay bills, going grocery shopping, going to clean house, going to church, going to meetings, going to work … going ... going ... going. Sometimes we forget that God tells us to "be still." In being still we are stilling our minds and focusing it on God. Pausing, sinking into His Word, and just talking with God, that is how we will "know He is God". Mommas you need to take some time today to just be still. Settle your mind and heart in God's presence. How can you find a moment of being still when life seems chaotic right now? said Cody Morris and a juvenile entered the home and Morris struck another juvenile and threatened to kill him. Morris, 19, has been charged with residential burglary, a Class B felony, terroristic threatening-first degree, a Class D felony, assault-first degree, a misdemeanor and public intoxi-

You have to make time. When you are driving in your car to take that baby to the doctor, put on some worship music and worship God. When your toddle is down for a nap, take a few minutes to read some scripture. Your house cleaning can wait a few more minutes. When you pray to God remember that is very important to not do all the talking. It is very important to listen to God speak to you too. I know that I needed this reminder; my life is in a season of busyness. If my life is, then I am sure that others are in need of this too. Let us not get caught up in our daily lives that we forget we were created by our Savior for Him. Psalms 46:10 “be still, and know that I am God.”

“Quilting With a Purpose” happens Thursday, 9-11 a.m., in the Alread EHC building. Then 1:302:30 p.m. it’s their monthly club meeting. Interested persons are invited to stop by and see what’s it all about. “Recycling Day” is Saturday, 8-10 a.m., in the Alread Cafeteria. My friend and fellow organic gardener Lalla Ostergren had me starting seeds in pots in her greenhouse this past weekend. She says, “We need to get an early start.” So hopefully we’ll have a crop of healthy transplants ready when the weather moderates. Her choices were lettuce, beet, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and turnip. We’ll direct seed around the end of the month. Lalla and I are also teaming up on a garden column later this month. Be looking for us and “think
spring.” If you info about the greater Crabtree and 16 West community call Jeff Burgess, 745-1249.

Anne Mann spent two weeks in Missouri recently. She visited with her mother and other family while she was there. Happy birthday to Shelby Tatum. She is celebrating her big day tonight! Anne’s Aunt Barbara Goodman came through brain surgery pretty good and will be going to Melbourne for rehab. Get well wishes go out to Lou Ellen Lemings; she was burned pretty bad in a fire that consumed her home. A lo-
cal young man went in and rescued her. Thank God for special heroes. Deniece Sikes went to Little Rock today for her PET scan. She will hear the results later. She is driving a new car. She got a pretty white 2018 Kia Sorento. Sounds like a nice one. She also started a Keto diet and has lost 17 pounds. Way to go girl! She even gets to eat roasted eggs! Ha Ha. You can ask her about that! I talked to Marva Ward. She said her grandson, Rylan Ward of Greenwood has the flu and has missed about a week of school. Get well wishes go out to him. Sindee and David Morse went to Greenwood last weekend and spent some time with Frankie, Erica and the boys. She reports a good visit. Get well wishes to my sister, Thelma Murray, she had to spend a couple days in the hospital this week. My brother, Bob-

by, is doing better. I am looking forward to him being well as can be and back on his feet. The most recent update on Ruth and BE Webb was an improvement. Will be glad to see them back home. I’m praying that no one else gets sick and the ones that are sick get well real fast. Until next time, God Bless.

The groundhog saw his shadow this week, so I guess we'll have six more weeks of winter. Feb. 3 was the first Saturday breakfast. The Senior Center hosted a pool tournament and bingo. The center does this every three months on the first Saturday of the month. For those of you that are not aware of the good hot lunches the center serves, they serve at 11:45 Monday through Thursday. The cost is just $3 for seniors and $6 for others. Maybe we'll see you there. Scotland Community Corporation will have its annual chili supper at the school cafeteria on February 17 at 6 p.m. and the cost is only $6. Desserts are always welcome.
Clubs
The Idlehour Bridge Club met Thursday at the home of Conie Reamey. Winners for the evening were: High, Billie Fendley; second, Emma Hink; traveling, Helen Dobbins; bingo, Kirk Reamey.

The flute has been one of my favorite instruments through the course of years. I love the airy natural sound of the panflute and have enjoyed listening to the haunting melodies of flutists like Zamfir and Leo Rojas. But I truly enjoy the sound of the Native American flute, as it seems to be in perfect harmony with nature. I haven't had the privilege of learning to play the Native American flute until just recently when William Worden offered to give me a lesson. It was such an honor; but I didn't know if I could understand it. Was I ever surprised! William showed me some basic things as I played one of his hand-crafted flutes. His clear and easy-going method of teaching had me playing the flute and even composing melodies within an hour. The way he taught it was quite comprehendible and fun to learn. William Worden builds, plays and instructs the Native American flute. He lives a quiet life in the Ozark Mountains in Shirley, Arkansas. with his wife, Patricia, and sons Andrew and Adam. Worden learned the art of flute-making on the Seminole Reservation in Southern Florida. He was instructed and guided by Sonny Nevaguaya, the son of the late Doc Tate Nevaquoya, who is credited with bringing about a resurgence of the flute after many years of dormancy in the Native American culture. He was mentored in the fine art of concert tuning to the traditional pentatonic scale by the late Dr. George Foss, a graduate of Julliard and former professor of music theory at Louisiana State University. So how did William Worden get the name "Woodpecker" incorporated with his name? William was given the name Woodpecker by his great friend and brother, Holy Man Tom
"StrongHeart" Reedy, in a naming ceremony at the annual Rendezvous on Pinnacle Mountain in Roland, Arkansas. The woodpecker represents the legend of the flute. Recently, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker has been sited in the very area where the Sunken Cypress that many of William's flutes are made from came. The bird was thought to have been extinct. As a registered Artist in Education on tour with the Arkansas Arts Council, William Worden is available for presentations and workshops for educational and civic organizations. He also gives presentations and teaches flute workshops in schools. The children really look forward to and enjoy his visits. When you go to the Spirit Songs website, you will discover many letters from schools all around the state commending and praising Worden's teaching students how to play the native American flute. One such letter is from the Heber Springs Elementary music teacher Diane Moody, and begins as follows: Dear Mr. Worden - First of all, I want to thank you for contacting our principal and requesting a meeting with us concerning presenting your program to our students. I came away from that meeting excited about the possibility that my music classes would receive knowledge about Indians, their heritage, and their music. Even though I was excited, I never could have imagined the elation shown by my students. They loved it! Every class was spellbound as you shared the stories and played various flutes. Their interest level was so high and their desire to ask questions so widespread that many times we had to end the class with hands still raised. As each class exited the music room, I heard comments like, "Awe-

some!" "That was great!" "Wow! That was so much fun!" When he was in high school, William played the tuba and when he was in the military, he learned guitar. But the flute was a different story. He was a tractor-trailer driver in the 90's making dedicated runs to Phoenix, Arizona. As he was driving his route through Oklahoma, William noticed a Cherokee gift shop and decided to go inside. He said, when he stepped inside, he heard this music that captivated him and asked the cashier where it was coming from. She pointed to the speaker on the wall and said it was a Native American flute like one that was hanging on the wall. He decided to buy it and discovered how easy it was to learn. This was 1998 and by February 1999 (after he took a course in Native American flute building on the Seminole Reservation - Alligator Alley - Florida), William built his first flute. He has sold his flutes many places, one of which was at the River Market in Little Rock. His flutes are all over the country, as well as in China, England and Spain. Worden said that

the flute is a great beginners instrument because it is so easy to learn; and is also good for those who are already musicians. The simplicity of learning the Native American flute makes it a fun instrument to play as well. A rare opportunity will present itself Saturday, Feb. 10, for anyone sixth grade and up at the Van Buren County library in Clinton starting at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. William Worden with the Arkansas Arts Council will offer a free class on the Native American flute. Those present will be able to use one of his hand-crafted flutes to practice on. William said that by the end of the lesson, those attending will be composing their own melodies on the flute. It is a great opportunity to learn something new and exciting and will be a very enjoyable experience as well. His CD "Old Journey New Way" will also be available at the library where fellow flutist Sam Lester accompanies William Worden on some of his songs. All of Williams’ songs are his own improvisational creations played on his hand-crafted Native American Flute.

Fishing Report
Despite the recent cold, then warm weather patterns, then back to cold, bass are beginning to warm up to the bite. Also, lots of different presentations are working, depending on the day and weather, at Bull Shoals Lake.
Central Arkansas
Little Red River
(updated 1-312018) Lowell Myers says that Sore Lip’em All Guide Service reported the Little Red continues to experience extremely low water conditions most days from lack of water release from the Greers Ferry Dam due to the low lake level. Power generation is occurring only during times of cold air temperatures, so expect extended days of very little water release during mild winter temperatures. Sowbugs, midges, soft hackles and Woolly Buggers are working well for fly anglers. Pink and white Trout Magnets are recommended for spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-3625150).
Harris Brake Lake
(updated 1-312018) Lisa at Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-778-
6944) in Benton said her customers report the crappie have been hot at Harris Brake using the No. 4 crappie minnows, especially around the docks.
Lake Overcup
(updated 1-312018) Johnny “Catfish” Banks at Overcup Bait Shop and R.V. Park (501-354-9007) said the water level is normal and clarity is good. Bassfishing has been picking up a little. Bream are slow but still catching some smaller ones on redworms around the docks and piers. Catfish are slow but still catching some good ones on trotlines and yo-yos. Crappie have slowed down some during the day but have been doing well early morning and after dark on yo-yos in 4-6 feet of water with minnows. Cold weather has slowed people from coming out, but the fishing continues.
Sunset Lake
(updated 1-312018) Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-778-6944) said a few people have been catch-
ing crappie on No. 6 crappie minnows and pink crappie minnows off of the dock and off the bridge going to the other side. Some catfish are being caught off of bait shrimp and nightcrawlers. And bass are biting on No. 12 bass minnows. This is a great little Game and Fish lake that's good for taking the kids. There is a paved walking trail all the way around the lake. With this being an Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Community Lake, they stock it with catfish only. It has other fish in there as well, but there are very strict regulations for the lake. The limits are three catfish per person, 25 bream and 30 crappie, while the bass have to be released immediately back into the lake. Public restrooms are available here
Saline River Access in Benton
(updated 1-312018) Lisa at Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-7786944) said a week ago Sunday her husband went down on the riv-
er and did pretty good. He caught four walleye, four Kentucky bass and two smallmouth. The only thing he brought home were the walleye. He was using brooder minnows on 8-poundTrilene XL clear line, with a small split shot and a No. 2 Eagle Claw 84A plain shank hook. He said he missed several other walleye or he would have brought home his limit, which he was two away from doing so. Lots of people don't realize the Saline River has walleye, which is the top of all fish in eating; crappie comes second, in our opinion. He got to the river before daylight. He usually does best either before daylight or right at dark. He said the river was just the right color and level. He goes in his canoe and goes to certain places on the bank to fish. With walleye you have to be quiet, for they spook easily. And another thing: They have teeth, so be sure not to try to lip them. Lisa says she’s had customers catch them but didn't know what they were so they released them.
Lake Winona
(updated 1-312018) Lisa at Lisa’s Bait Shop (501-7786944) says she has had a couple of people going here crappie fishing “but to be honest I haven't heard back any reports from there. But I also have a lot of people that don't want to tell of their catches in fear that others would go

there.” She says it’s not a lake that gets much pressure at all being way out in Paron and the road to the lake, which is gravel, is a rough ride. That's why lots of people like it, for they know some will go once and usually won’t go back, she said. “But I have seen some dandy crappie from there. It also has bream, bass, catfish and walleye. Yes, walleye!”
North Arkansas
White River
(updated 1-312018) John Berry of Berry Brothers Guide Service in Cotter (870-4352169) said on the White, the hot spot has been Rim Shoals. The hot flies were olive Woolly Buggers (sizes 8, 10), Y2Ks (sizes 14, 12), prince nymphs (size 14), zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead or red with silver wire and silver bead size 16, size 18), pheasant tails (size 14), ruby midges (size 18), root beer midges (size 18), pink and cerise San Juan worms (size 10), and sowbugs (size 16). Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective (John’s current favorite is a size 10 Y2K with a size 14 ruby midge suspended below it). Use lead to get your flies down.
Bull Shoals Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 652.87 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 659.00 feet msl).
February 6, 2018
(updated 1-312018) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock said the lake level last week was at 653 feet msl (about 6 feet below normal pool). The surface water temperature is 45-49 degrees depending on where you’re fishing. The fishing has been pretty good but it’s hit or miss depending on the day and weather. Depending on where you’re at on the lake there are a couple of different things going on and a lot of it has to do with the shad. When the temperature was real cold and then it got hot, Del says, he believes some of the shad are starting to die off. The big sea dragons that you’ll see throughout the lake on the creek arms, there’s some there and in the turns in the main channel swings, so you want to graph on them and see if there’s fish in them. For the deep bite the spoons are working. Use a half-ounce to a quarter-ounce spoon depending on how deep they are. Del is fishing it anywhere from 20 feet out to 35-45 feet. The drop-shot stop is still working and the dropshot fish seem to be on the channel swing banks or the bluffs or the bluff ends. The jerkbait bite, if there’s some sun and a little bit of wind, the jerkbait will pull some fish off the docks and brush piles. Keep the boat in 30-35 feet of water. The deeper docks are holding some fish.
