Marijuana outlet picks site Arkansas Natural Products has received approval to locate its medical marijuana outlet in a Highway 65 strip mall in Clinton. The mall is located behind KFC. Work is underway at the location to modify the two units into the dispensary. Arkansas Natural products hopes to have its doors open sometime next month.
The company spent some time searching for a location that met requirements. The location had to be at least 1,500 feet from a church, school or licensed day care. This location fit the bill with about 12 feet to spare. The company is in need of employees and as such is holding a job fair from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the Clinton Senior Center, 311 Yellowjacket Lane, Clinton. Prospective employees must pass a federal background check as well as a drug test. Pay will be around $15 per hour. Arkansas voters approved medical marijuana in November 2016. Marijuana
has some well-proven benefits, including relief for long-term pain. It also can ease nausea from chemotherapy, seizures from epilepsy and muscle spasms from multiple sclerosis, according to studies. Because of the federal ban on marijuana, studies on edible marijuana are hard to perform.
The strip mall behind KFC on Highway 65 in Clinton will be the location for the medical marijuana dispensary.

A teenager who battled brain cancer most of his life passed away at his home on April 4, 2019. Devon Wooten was 15. His first fight with cancer began when he was just 5 years old. His parents, Sarah and Jason, as well as his aunt and other family members and friends shared their story with the community over the years - from fundraisers to trips to Houston to treatments they were trying to save Devon’s life. County Judge Dale James had proclaimed April 5 Devon Wooten Day, and Devon’s death did not change that. As a show of love and support for his family, many people throughout the county dressed in red - Devon’s favorite color, or gold, which symbolizes the fight against childhood cancer. Those wearing red included his classmates at Clinton schools and many students at South Side school as well. A candlelight vigil was held in his honor Sunday evening in downtown Clinton. Dr. Joe Fisher, superintendent at Clinton schools, announced
Clinton Junior High turned out in red for their classmate. that school would dismiss early so that students could attend Devon’s funeral at the auditorium. Sporting events for Tuesday were cancelled because of visitation hours. James struggled to find words in a Facebook post to the com-
munity. “The support shown to Devon, literally by the thousands, is overwhelming and touching. … Your heart is huge. Your compassion is humbling. You are what makes VBC amazing.” The community will long remember Devon’s legacy.

3 charged after traffic stop The Van Buren County sheriff’s office was among those providing as escort April 2 for a fallen Arkansas soldier being returned to his home in Harrison. Many fire departments, police and bikers led the hearse that left from Little Rock as residents and business employees lined Highway 65 in honor of SPC Michael J. Faulkenberry, 31, who was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and died in a private vehicle accident.
Deputies stopped a white Buick on Highway 65 North near Dead End Road for a traffic violation around 12:45 a.m. April 2 and found more than they had bargained for. Inside the vehicle deputies found Tracy Shaneyfelt, Charles Lamkin and Joseph Lamkin. According to the
registration the vehicle belonged to Raphael Salvador. When deputies asked Shaneyfelt, who was driving, who owned the vehicle, she stated that her cousin had purchased it for them to come visit them in Texas and that's where they were headed, according to a news release from the Van Buren County sheriff’s
office. Deputies asked if there was anything illegal in the car and Shaneyfelt stated there was not and consented to a search of the vehicle, according to the news release. At that time the two passengers were asked to get out of the vehicle. Deputies located a small amount of marijuana on Charles Lam-
kin while he was being patted down, the release stated. A search of the vehicle yielded 25.9 grams of methamphetamine, 0.5 grams of suspected black tar Heroin, 7.5 grams of marijuana, a German manufactured 7.65mm caliber pistol, a See Arrest on page 6

I talked to Ruth Webb, she didn’t have any news, but says she sure is glad to see some sunshine. It just didn’t last long enough! JoAnn and Buddy Hancock of Hot Springs Village visited her sister, DeLane Story, last Saturday. DeLane enjoyed the visit. Donna Sherrod and her sister, Marty Lehman of Pea Ridge, left last Saturday morning and went to Ocala, Florida to visit their sister, Elzada Foster. On the way, they stopped in Berry, Alabama and visited their brother, Ray Goodman. He is 90 years young! While they were in Ocala, Donna said they made a beach run to Daytona to get their toes in the sand! They came back by way of Atlanta, Georgia and that sounded like a bad experience to me. They ran into some bad weather in Mississippi and spent the night in Tupelo. They made it home Friday. Needless to say, they both enjoyed the trip very much in spite of the weather and traffic. Marva and RG Ward have been enjoying going to watch

Velma Jackson
Betty Cantrell
Betty Jewell (Johnson) Cantrell, 77, of Bald Knob, Arkansas was born August 15, 1941, in Banner, Arkansas at the family home and went to be with her Lord on April 4, 2019. She peacefully passed, surrounded by her loving family, in her favorite chair at the family home. Betty loved her Lord supremely, her family sacrificially, her friends superbly and no one superficially. She was one of the kindest people ever to grace the planet. She loved unconditionally and stood by her loved ones without reservation. She is preceded in death by her parents, Hubert and Elsie (Robbins) Johnson; one brother, Doyle Johnson; and one sister, Patricia Johnson Short. Left to
I took a seat beside other teenage girls and ladies on the left side of the isle. When the men came inside, Gene came over and sat beside me. I don’t know if he was aware of the mountain custom. It may be that he was just a rebel without a cause. But I rather liked that he sat by me. Around Easter,

the weather always turned cold on Banner Mountain, and Mama referred to the change as an Easter cold spell. Looking back, I’m wondering if Mama ever made a new Easter dress for me to wear to church. I don’t remember if she did or not. I don’t recall dressing up in any special clothes on that special day, back in my childhood. Later on in my life, after Gene and I married and had children of our own, I do recall buying or sewing new dresses for our daughters for Easter. It was definitely a tradition. Easter was the day to change from drab winter clothes to the white or pastel shades in light-

er weight for spring. Winter was past, so bring on summer! And there was a time when ladies added a hat to their church attire. It was a pleasant time and women in their different styles of hats were quite lovely. Styles change. Today, more than likely, many, if not most of the ladies at the church I attend wear slacks or pant suits. As for me, I always wore a dress to church and to Easter Sunrise services even when the weather was very cold – until just a few years ago. There was no good reason why I should be the only lady in a dress, so I caved in and began wearing slacks or blue jeans to church. Habits and traditions were hard for me to break, even when everyone else had already broken them. The custom of gentlemen and ladies sitting on opposite sides in the sanctuary changed long ago. The gentlemen, perhaps, rebelled against that custom and now they sit beside their beautiful ladies in church. And thank goodness for that!

chicken soup
Soup for you Want to lose weight? How about an easy, tasteful way to do just that? Start off supper with a cup of soup. One of the major reasons we eat too much is that we get too hungry and when that happens, we eat too much of the wrong things. If you eat some
soup first, it will fill you up and you will eat less of the things that follow, which are inevitably more calorie packed. A study was done to test this theory at Penn State University. The control group ate as usual and the study group ate some soup first. You guessed
it, those who ate soup actually consumed 20% less calories overall than those who ate normally. Thirst is another part of the equation. We have known for some time that if you are thirsty, you will eat more. Your body is saying “feed me Seymore,” when it is really only wants to be hydrated. A couple of more tidbits of info here before hitting the soup aisle at the supermarket. Some soups have a lot of sodium, that will make you retain water and it’s not good for your heart. Some soups also are high in calories, so watch for that. Other than that, “Soups on!”
Being your best you
Tony Robbins says that we generally change ourselves for one of two reasons: inspiration or desperation. Desperation is when we have hit a low spot in an area and are desperate to change our circumstances. Inspiration is when we are inspired to change. Inspired by something deep inside us that wants better, inspired by our “why” or inspired by others. What are some tools we can use to change? By pursuing personal development we can take responsibility for our own self improvement by developing our positive qualities and strengths, learning new things to improve our lives, our character, our tools and resources. Personal development is about bettering ourselves. It’s about creating skills and adding value to our lives. Like I mentioned in a previous article, you need to think about your current self and compare it to your ideal self. You can get to your ideal self, but it is going to take work on your part. You can become the person you know you can be, the person that would make you proud. Pour yourself into self development. Focus on things that inspire you, motivate you and give you the knowledge and tools for a better version of your-
self. Personal development lasts a lifetime. Bettering yourself needs to be your never-ending pursuit. Where do people find inspiration for personal development? Focus more on who you want to become rather than what you will get. They are intertwined though and what you become directly influences what you get. Think of it this way: Most of what you have today you have attracted by becoming the person you are right now. For example, did you know income rarely exceeds personal development? Sometimes income takes a lucky jump, but unless you learn to handle the responsibilities that come with it, it will usually shrink back to the amount you can handle. If someone gives you a million dollars, you’d better hurry up and become a millionaire. A very rich man once said, “If you took all the money in the world and divided it equally among everybody, it would soon be back in the same pockets it was before." Personal growth via personal development is an amazing process, in which improvements are made in your physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social, and/or financial state. I myself love self-development. I see it as an obsession in it-

Little Red River
Greers Ferry Lake
(updated 4-3-2019) Greg Seaton of littleredflyfishingtrips.com (501-690-9166) said the Little Red River is high and rolling. The release is 9,300 cfs, which is the equivalent of two units plus another 3,100 cfs. Greg said the Army Corps of Engineers informed him that this would be the schedule for the next 12-14 days. The plan is to gradually cut back the flow when the lake level is close to normal. The gradual drop will help curtail the sluffing (bank erosion) of the river banks. After a prolonged period of high water and the recent rains, the banks are water soaked and need to dry out gradually so that they don’t slide into the river under their own weight. The Corps voice recording and apps will state it is generating one unit but this is being supplemented by a release through the floodgates. This amount of water creates danger to boaters on the river. Please use caution and push your fishing trip back a couple of weeks. If you are on the river, please be extremely careful when approaching the upstream side of any obstacle or dock. Even a large fishing boat can be swamped or pulled
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 468.49 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (updated 4-3-2019) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-940-1318) said the lake water level is falling at a pretty good clip as the Army Corps of Engineers has six gates open and well as generators running 24/7 until the lake is down to normal pool. It is at 468.71 feet msl, or 6.67 feet above normal pool of 462.04 feet msl, and at current release will be down to normal in six days or so. The crappie are eating well before the spawn offshore and in pole timber or brush piles in 1230 feet of water. Tommy has been spider rigging and pole fishing with jigs, minnows or crankbaits – “lots of 100 fish days,” he says. Walleye are still being caught up rivers, and now the lake fish are eating some as well, on crankbaits, grubs and live bait. Bream have been slow to respond to the water warmup, but some are being caught scattered around docks and down to 25 feet
on crickets and artificial baits. Black bass are scattered from super shallow out to 30 feet and can be caught with a variety of baits as the bite is changing every hour. There has been two 10-pounders caught the last few weeks. The cold front has affected the hybrid and white bassand set them back. Some are up rivers, some in the bushes and some are still in 43 feet of water. Use spoons, grubs live bait and Alabama rigs. No reports on catfish.
North Arkansas
White River
(updated 4-3-2019) Cotter Trout Dock (870435-6525) says, “What can we say about fishing the White River in the north-central Arkansas Ozarks? We catch a lot of trout on a large assortment of bait and flies; we are blessed by beautiful scenery, a wide open sky and spring time colors popping out everywhere; we have a great time each and every day enjoying and employing God's great outdoors. Did I mention that we catch a lot of trout on just about anything you put at the end of your line, that is, if you're willing to keep a variety of flies and baits handy and are willing to change up your baits if needed? We've been
most successful this week with sculpins for bigger fish and small jigs for fly or spin fishers (streamers didn't produce like we wanted, so returned to a smaller fly dropping it just below the surface).” The water level has continued to vary somewhat during the day: high water in the morning, dropping to minimum flow levels for a few hours, then back up to four or five units during the evening and overnight. “We've experienced a decent bite on falling water midday and usually end our fishing day on a high note with some shrimp and a peach colored egg tied on. Come test the waters and enjoy a spring day in the Ozarks. Bring some rain protection – it's April in Arkansas!”
Norfork Lake Norfork Tailwater
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 554.53 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April 552.00 feet msl; April-September, 554.00 feet msl). (updated 4-3-2018) Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters said, “We continued with our evening fishing this past week on Norfork Lake. My clients who were fishing in the morning were still struggling to catch stripers, so we decided to take what the lake was offering. The night bite was fair but not as good as when we had the full moon. We had a couple of days with a south wind, but most days it stayed out of the north or northwest and was cold. By week's end the morning bite was picking up. My clients reported they were catching limits of hybrids from north of Cranfield to Biar Creek. They were fishing the bluff walls where the chan-

nel was and catching them using shiners and long free lines with only a split shot. “On the south end of the lake we fished Friday morning but got a very late start and managed to boat two stripers on planer boards next to the shore. We had three more strikes before the rain set in. The lake temperature was near 55 degrees and I feel would have been in the low 60s if it wasn't for this cold snap we are having. “With that said we should see some great fishing the next several weeks for stripers and crappie. I have been seeing large schools over the new brush piles the AGFC put in the lake. They will start moving towards the shore as the water continues to warm up. Overall we should have great morning, afternoon and night fishing beginning this coming weekend.” (updated 4-32019) Steve Olomon of Steve’s Guide Service said the Norfork Lake level is normal and the water temp is in the low 50s in the main lake to the upper 50s up in the creeks. The water clarity is clear main lake and stained up in the creeks. The upper end of the lake is a little warmer. There are a few white bass coming up chasing bait along with some black bass. “You can catch the topwater fish on just about any topwater bait. I like to use a Zara Spook,” he said. The bass are hitting jerk baits, crankbaits and swimbaits. The whites are hitting swimbaits as well. “I haven't seen any surface activity for hybrids or stripers, but it will happen soon when the water warms a little more and the weather gets more stable. There are some stripers hitting at night. The bite is
only going to get better as we move into April.”
Norfork Tailwater
(updated 4-3-2019) John Berry of Berry Brothers Guide Service in Cotter (870-4352169) said last weekend that over the previous week Norfork Lake fell 0.4 foot to rest at 0.6 foot above seasonal power pool of 553.75 feet msl and 25.6 feet below the top of flood pool. The Norfork heavy generation and some wadable water. Seasonal power pool has been reset for the lakes in the White River system. All of the lakes in the White River System are inches from the top of power pool. Expect more wadable water in the near future. The Norfork has fished well. Navigate this stream with caution as there has been major gravel recruitment at the bottom of Mill Pond and the dock hole. The most productive flies have been small midge patterns (sizes 18, 20, 22) like ruby midges, root beer midges, zebra midges (black or red with silver wire and silver bead) and soft hackles (sizes 14, 16) like the green butt. Egg patterns have also been productive. Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective. Try a small Y2K suspended 18 inches below a brightly colored San Juan worm (hot fluorescent pink or cerise size 10). The fishing is better in the morning. Dry Run Creek is fishing well. With spring, it has been a bit crowded. Begin early to avoid the crowds. The hot flies have been sowbugs (size 14), Y2Ks (size 12) and various colored San Juan worms (worm brown, red, hot fluorescent pink and cerise size 10).
