Atkins chief hired to lead Clinton schools The Clinton School Board selected a new superintendent last Wednesday at a special meeting that convened at 8 p.m. Dr. Joseph Fisher, currently with the Atkins School District, has been selected from about 20 candidates. He was given a one-year contract. The School Board vote was unanimous following a two-hour executive session, which left about 35 people waiting in the hallway for the de-
cision. Also at the meeting, the board decided to spend up to $9,000 to join other schools in Southwestern Energy’s lawsuit against Van Buren and some other counties. SWN claims that its product has been overvalued by Van Buren County. The county uses a formula devised by the state and County Judge Hooper upheld the county Equalization Board’s ruling, which led to SWN’s lawsuit.

Reynolds Sells meth because jobs don’t pay, suspect says
A 28-year-old Clinton man who told a deputy he sells methamphetamine because he can’t get a job that pays good money is facing several felony charges. Richard Paul Reynolds was found parked in a driveway on Highway 110 asleep behind the wheel on April 4, according to an affidavit for arrest. Deputies found a glass smoking device, several small bags of a crystalline substance, which weighed close to 20 grams and field tested positive for meth,
A Paragould man was shot to death by law enforcement officers Friday afternoon in Searcy County. Deputies and Department of Correction officers were searching for Daniel Allen Yielding, 23, around 12:30 p.m. Yielding was wanted for an outstanding warrant for a parole violation. He was seen fleeing a home in Marshall, police said. Deputies and state correction officers spotted Yielding armed with a knife in a wooded
area Friday afternoon, police said. According to authorities, Yielding was ordered to drop the knife but refused to comply and moved toward a correction officer, who fired his gun as Yielding advanced. Yielding's body was sent to the state Crime Laboratory for an autopsy. The Arkansas State Police investigation will be submitted to the Searcy County prosecuting attorney, who will determine whether the use of force was justified.
It seems a new scam is born every day. Some customers of Miller Sanitation in Clinton have recently received letters saying they owe money to the trash service and can pay it off to a company called Omega. These letters are phony and no one should send Omega any money. A Miller employee was surprised that a scammer would try to use them in their scheme since the trash service does not even let bills go that far past due without cutting off service. She wants everyone to know the let-

Nervous man arrested
A Greenbrier man was arrested at a friend’s house in Bee Branch on April 6 after authorities noticed he was acting nervously, according to an affidavit for arrest. Robert Burrell, 41, told an officer he had some marijuana in his pocket; a glass pipe and some
bag with white crystalline substance also were found, the report states. Burrell was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance, both Class D felonies.
Man faces multiple charges
A Clinton man faces several charges after sheriff’s deputies say he took a car, which he abandoned later, and had a handgun that he threatened three people with on March 27. Mason Nixon, 22, has been charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threatening, and possession of firearms by certain persons, all Class D felonies, and unauthorized use of a vehicle, a misdemeanor.

Two people were arrested after dep-
ters are not coming from Miller Sanitation and says to report those letters to the police, sheriff’s office and state attorney general’s office. The fake letter states that “Effective immediately, all payments towards your Miller’s Sanitation Service account … must be sent directly to Omega RMS, LLC.” It offers to let the tardy customer make four easy payments to catch up their bill. This is one of many scams out there. Remember to never give your personal information to someone who calls you.

The two were transported to the Van Buren County Detention Center where a plastic bag containing a crystalline substance later field testing positive for meth was found beside the deputy’s vehicle. A used syringe was found by jailers in Wissenburg’s pocket, the report states. Lucille and Vern Sitton celebrated their 76th anniversary.
Clinton couple married 76 years By Glenda Smith
On March 28, 1942, a journey covering over three-quarters of a century began. Vern Sitton and Lucille Williams had know each other most of their lives. Vern lived with his family in Searcy County, and Lucille lived with her family in Van Buren County. It was gardening time of the year and they were helping Lucille’s family set out potato slips. A short time before, Vern had received an “invitation” to report for active duty. Uncle Sam needed him soon. World War II was well on the way. With little time for planning, the race was on. Vern decided this would be a good time to ask Lucille to marry him. He asked and she said “yes.’ Marshall, Arkansas was the nearest place to obtain a marriage license and a long way from Old Lexington. Lucille and her friend, Beulah Mae Nixon, traveled by mail truck to Elba, Arkansas. From Elba they rode the
Missouri & North Arkansas train to Leslie, Arkansas. The bride and bridesmaid were met by the groom at the train station. All aboard, completing the wedding party and on to Marshall for the marriage license. With license in hand, three hours later they caught the next train back to Leslie. There they Rev. B.E. Eldridge performed the ceremony with Mrs. Eldridge and Miss Nixon as attendants. After the ceremony Beulah Mae boarded the train for Elba. The newlyweds caught a ride with a neighbor who took them to Vern’s parents’ home near Oxley. In too short of time, the “honeymoon” was over. Vern reported to the Army post in Fort Bliss, Texas, leaving his bride behind. March 28, 2018, Vern and Lucille celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary. Helping celebrate this special occasion were family and those who care for them at Ozark Health Nursing and Rehab.
The Easter egg hunt on Easter Sunday was a great success. It did not take long for 1,500 eggs to be found. At 2 p.m. that day, balloons were released in memory of Toby Stripling and the new playground was dedicated in his honor. Thanks to all who came to the First Saturday Breakfast on April 7. We appreciate all the support we get! On April 14 in the cafeteria at 6 p.m. the Scotland Community Corporation will have a soup (or chili) and salad supper. The cost is $6. We can always use desserts if anyone would like to bring one. Candidates will speak after dinner. This is a chance to get to know the candidates, ask questions, and decide who you want to vote for. Please note - there will be no pie action at the event. Nell O'neal fell at home and got several bruises and a couple of broken bones. We are glad she is back home and getting better. Joy Jones fell outside and broke a leg. It was a bad break and a while before she was able to get help. I tried to call for an update, but did not get anyone. James and Joyce Burns as well as Jim Bailey all had tests this last week, but no
reports are back yet. Red Ingram had surgery last week and Doris Ingram had her other knee done. We are thankful they are home. Mary Scroggins has had pneumonia and seems to be getting better. Too many Scotland folks with health problems. We pray for speedy recoveries! Don't forget to plan on the trail ride at Scotland on the third Saturday in May. Check on the Facebook Scotland Community Page for all the details. Have a safe week and call James Burns at 592-3935 if you have any Scotland news.

It’s Prayer Night Tuesdays, 7 p.m., in the Crabtree Foursquare Church. The ACRDC board meeting isTuesday, 6:30pm, in the EHC clubhouse. EHC meets Thursday, 1:30 p.m., in their Alread clubhouse on 16 West. It’s a Work Day Friday, 10:30 a.m.2:30 p.m., at the Alread cafeteria. Bring

Thankfully I had well covered my early tomato transplants. All my cool weather crops — lettuce, arugula, radish, chard, peas, onions and mustard — showed no damage without covers. Many cool weather crops survive to 28 degrees with no tissue damage. Some can go colder like cabbage, garlic, rhubarb, rutabaga, broccoli, kohlrabi, and Brussels sprouts. But the alltime “tough veggie” award goes to collards, which can survive a bitter 5 degrees. Seedlings of all these plants are much less resistant and plants need to be hardened to cooler temperatures before being exposed to freezing. Neighbor Johnny Fitsjurl called to talk weather. Said he seems to remember an April cold snap in 2007 that damaged a lot of fruit trees and other plants. He went on to say it was more extended than this one we just had. April’s full moon is sometimes called the Pink Moon because it follows the blooming of wild ground phlox. And in other places and times it’s been called Sprout-

Marion Smith had a visitor this week. Her daughter, Sherri Carter of Jamestown, Virginia was here for several days. Bobby took them out to eat at the Catfish Barn in Quitman. They also had a meal at La Rosita in Clinton. They had a good time visiting and catching up. Sherri was here to attend the Clinton Alumni Banquet, which she enjoyed very much. She got a prize for traveling the farthest. Marion said Sherri was accompanied by her doggies, so Sweet Pea and Kitty Kat had company too. Get well wishes go out to Winnie Williams. She took a bad fall and broke her hip. She had to have a hip replacement. She is now in Ozark Health rehab while she recuperates. We’ve had a pretty uneventful week around here, so I guess that’s it for now. God bless and take care of each other.

It’s all about me! More and more people are being afflicted by a debilitating lack of energy. A recent study found that 38 percent of all workers in the U.S. were affected by fatigue. Exhaustion is 3 times more like to cause people to miss work than any other problem. Drowsiness causes 72,000 automobile crashes each year, and the CDC estimates that about 6,000 people a year die in fatigue-related car accidents. It is not known exactly how many Americans are affected by exhaustion, but

it is thought to be in the millions, and the problem is growing. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) has been around for a while, but it has been often misdiagnosed. Back in the ’70s, psychologists referred to it as “mass hysteria.” Then in the ’80s, it was reported as “yuppie flu,” which was a slap in the face to that generation, whom the older generations considered lazy. Many doctors today still often put this down as being “something in your head.” We do not know

what causes CFS, we do know that glandular fever is responsible for 12 percent of all cases. If you are exhausted all the time, think back, did you have a real high fever at some time? That may have done it. Other causes that have been researched is genetics, diabetes, heart disease, COPD, sleep disorders, diet, and environment. Most experts believe it is due to a combination of things. CFS is often called myalgic encephalopathy (ME), but not everyone agrees that they are the same. Symptoms of CFS and ME are: daily exhaustion, headaches, poor memory, flu-like symptoms, feeling sleepy, pain, weakness and depressed mood. These symptoms can range in severity from one person to the next. Some are mildly ex-

hausted, while others are so fatigued they cannot stand up, or even hold their head up. The critical symptom to identify is this, people suffering from CFS/ME do not feel refreshed or energized after sleeping. There is a light at the end of the tunnel though, and it is not an oncoming train. In the next few articles, we will talk more about fatigue and what can be done. But know this, it is not in your head. You are not just being lazy. You are not tired because you are depressed, you are depressed because you are tired. Cemetery cleanup Time to start mowing the Settlement Cemetery again. So if you have flowers that will interfere with the mowing and weed eating we ask that you remove them or they will be removed for you. A Dumpster has been set there during April and May for the old flowers to be thrown into.
We do not have a paid caretaker so we are all responsible for our own plots. There will be dirt available if you need to fill in any graves. We like to have the cemetery in nice condition for Memorial Day and the Shirley Homecoming. Any help you might be able to do will be appreciated.

ACCDA news By Burtie Harder
ACCDA had its regular meeting Mondaym April 2. It was reported that we had an amazing turn out at our St. Patrick’s Day Dinner due mostly to all the local candidates running for office this election year. It was also reported that everyone had a great time at the Alread Annual Egg Hunt. It was a large group and we served 105 hotdogs after the egg hunt. ACCDA would like to remind everyone that we need their help for a work day at the Alread Community Center on April 13 at 10:30 a.m. Since we will be working both inside and outside there are lots of options on what people can help with. Some of the
suggestions for possible projects included, but are not limited to, painting the cafeteria inside and out, painting the “parking” posts, painting Alread Community Center signs, cleaning up around the buildings and cleaning the cafeteria. Bring the tools you feel most comfortable with and let’s spruce up the Community Center ahead of all the spring activities. We encourage everyone to bring a sack lunch. Bottled water will be available. ACCDA would like to remind the community about several upcoming events. by Thu Welborn
Clinton resident Thu (pronounced To) Welborn lived through some harsh conditions in her early years in Vietnam before finding happiness with an American GI. This is Thu’s story.)
Part 2
I walked from the north side of Hanoi to Haiphong, located on the south side of the city. Right away, I started looking for work. On one of the streets, I found a French restaurant and walked inside. There, the owner who was an elderly Vietnamese man was going from table to table, asking his customers if they were enjoying their meals. Finally, the owner walked up to me and asked me, "Where did you come from?” I told him, "From Hanoi. I am looking for work." Then he asked me, “Do you have any family?” “No,” I replied. “I am an orphan." "Well then, you can work for me and stay with my family," the owner said with a kind smile on his face. I smiled back, ready to go to work and begin a new part of my life. The owner and his family treated me very well, just like I was one of their own. I lived with them for almost five years until I was nineteen. While living and working with the family, I learned to speak French. When I was 18, I met a young French soldier who fell in love with me and asked me to be his wife. However, when I applied for the marriage license, the court official told me I was too young to leave the country with the French soldier. I would have to wait until I was 21. The young soldier was sad, but he had to return to France without me as his bride. He wanted me to keep in touch with him so he could return to marry me when I would become 21. Howev-
er, since I couldn't read or write, we lost touch. A year later in 1954, North Vietnam and South Vietnam began fighting against one another in a civil war. Many people in North Vietnam wanted to leave their homes to go live in South Vietnam. I decided to go with them. Carrying my suitcase with my only belongings, I followed the refugees to the coast to the seaport town of Lau Son. There, we boarded a ship that would take us to South Vietnam. We were on the ship for 4 nights and 3 days until we came to the harbor at the mouth of the Mekong River where it empties into the China Sea. After I got off the boat, I followed some of the refugees to look for a place to live and work. I had a little money left in my savings from my restaurant job in Haiphong, so I helped pay for a taxi ride I shared with a few other refugees to Saigon, the capital of South Vietnam. Shortly after I arrived in the city I found a job at a little beer joint on a crowded street. While waitressing there, I met a customer who was a first officer in the South Vietnamese Air Force. This man, who was a widower with a young son, eventually married me as his second wife. Since he was a military man, we lived on the Bien Hoa Air Force Base just outside Saigon with his mother. I didn't get along very well with my new mother-in-law because she looked down on me, a young orphan woman with no formal education. Her son loved me, but he was torn between his mother and me, his wife. Often he did not come home some nights after work, but rather went out and stayed with other women. When I found out he had been cheating on me, my poor young tender heart was broken. After all the hardships

My Life
I had been through, I felt so hopeless that I decided to end my life. My-mother-in-law had been taking a prescription medicine for one of her health conditions. So one day, I took a bottle of her pills and a glass of water, and swallowed all the pills, one after the other. When my mother-in-law discovered the missing bottle, she told her son. He came to me and asked me about the missing medicine, and I told him I had taken them to end my life. He then rushed me to the hospital where the doctors pumped my stomach to save my life. A few days after I went home and got to feeling better, I went to the courthouse and filed for a divorce. Three months passed before the court sent my husband his notice of the divorce. When he read the notice, my husband begged me not to leave him, but I told him, "No. I cannot stay with you because you have other women!" With a very angry look on his face, he told me, "If you're not going to stay with me, I'm going to kill you!" Then he grabbed a large butcher knife from the kitchen counter and started to come toward me. "If you kill me," I told him, "I will die, and since I have no family, you will have to go to jail for life, and then there will be

Then he stabbed the knife into the floor before he ran out of the house and left me there alone. After I calmed down, I decided to go out and look for a job so I could pay for the divorce to support myself when I would be on my own again. I rode my Moped to the American military officers' club at the Bien Hoa Air Force Base to apply for a job. The manager there hired me right away, and started teaching me how to mix drinks. Soon, I became a very good little bartender.
Six months passed and finally I was divorced from my first husband. I worked at the officers' club for another six months, and then I was offered a second job at the American military Enlisted Men's Club. At my new job, I met a man who also worked there, who didn't know if I was married or single. One day, while we were working together, this man looked at me with his sparkly brown eyes and said, "I am going to marry you!” However, I couldn't understand a word of what he had said to me. So, I went to get the club's interpreter so he could translate for the
man with the sparkly brown eyes and me. When the interpreter asked the man what he had said to me, the man told him again in English that he wanted to marry me. Then the interpreter said to me in Vietnamese, “Tôi muô’n lâ’y em.” I was speechless! I didn't know what to say, or even think! The man with the sparkly brown eyes kept after me, asking me over and over again, "When are we getting married? When are we getting married?” Finally, I said, “Ok. I am going to marry you!” Soon we made our wedding plans. About a week See My Life on page 7

Thu rides her Moped to work. My Life from page 6 after the marriage license waiting period was completed, the man with the sparkly brown eyes, Kenneth Welborn, took me, Thu Royal, as his wife in the courthouse in Saigon. The day after we were married, Kenneth and I left Vietnam to come to the United States to live in our new home on the Blytheville Air Force Base in Arkansas. I was so excited and happy to be married to such a wonderful, loving man and to be moving with him to the U.S. that I hadn't even thought about having to speak English once we would be living in the States. When the thought did come to me, I was truly beginning to feel afraid because I would have to learn a whole new language and a new way of life as an American. After my husband and I arrived in the U.S., we first visited his family who lived in Arizona at that time. As I listened to Kenneth talking with his parents and his brother, I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying to one another. I realized I really need-
ed to learn to speak and understand English so I could learn the names of the foods I wanted to cook for my husband, and how to read recipes as well as go shopping. After visiting his family, Kenneth and I moved to Blytheville Air Force Base in northeastern Arkansas where we made our first home together as husband and wife. After living there for 18 months, Kenneth left the Air Force to work as a civilian. We moved to Arizona near the Grand Canyon to live close to his parents. There my husband and I worked together at Fresh Harvey's Laundry. Kenneth maintained the washers, dryers and the other laundry machines, while I helped with the processing of the laundry orders. We worked there as a team for a year, then we moved back to Arkansas, to live with his Aunt Margie in Booneville. While we lived in Booneville, Kenneth's father asked us to find a piece of property somewhere in the Ozarks with a house on it so he and Kenneth's mother could move to Arkansas after he retired. Kenneth and I soon found some
land in the Ozark Mountains near the small community of Alread. We found a place that had 45 acres with a 2-bedroom house. My husband and I moved into the house and lived there for almost a year and a half alone together as a married couple. Then Kenneth's father retired from his job in Arizona, and he and his wife moved into the home with us. My husband and I lived there another 3 months then we moved into the nearby town of Clinton so Kenneth would be closer to his job with the Petit Jean Electric Cooperative. We bought a small house in town on a lot near the Clinton school. While my husband worked at the electric company, I would walk to town every day to do the shopping and to see the sights around town. I met a nice lady who was a storekeeper for a shirt outlet store where shirts were sold that had been made at the shirt factory in nearby Marshall, Arkansas. The storekeeper, Miss Nina Duncan, became a good friend to me. I learned to speak English by listening closely to Nina and other people who, like me,
were shopping at the stores in town. I visited with Nina while she worked at the shirt outlet store every day when I went downtown. On the weekends, Kenneth and I worked at his parents' farm in Alread. My husband cut his parents' firewood, and bushhogged their pasture, and built a fence around it. He also built them a barn and a storm cellar, and remodeled his mother's kitchen. Meanwhile, I helped cook his family's meals and helped his mother with the housework. I also spent time with his mother, playing her favorite game - Gin Rummy. Later on Kenneth bought me a sewing machine and taught me how to sew. I began to make many dresses for my mother-in-law and myself. Even though I couldn’t read the sewing instructions written in English, Kenneth showed me how to follow the diagrams to make the dresses. Other than sewing dresses, I also made a large laundry bag out of heavy white material to carry our clothes in when it was time for me to go to the laundromat in downtown Clinton. One day, my husband and I went to the grocery store near where we lived in Clinton. After we got to the store. Kenneth gave me a shopping cart and told me to get whatever I wanted while he looked around the store. Along one aisle, I saw a package of what I thought was some kind of cereal. It looked good to me, so I put the package in my cart. After I had finished shopping, my husband paid for the groceries and other items in the cart. Then we went home hungry and ready to eat a good meal. As soon as we got home, we unpacked the groceries so I could fix dinner for us. My husband helped me take the groceries out of the sacks and put them away. When he
Page 7 picked up the package of what I had thought was cereal, he showed it to me and asked me, "What are you going to do with this. Baby?" "I'm going to eat it." Then Kenneth told me, “I wouldn't eat it." "But why?" I asked. He looked at me strangely, then said quietly, "Because, this is cat food.” Since we had many stray cats around our home we fed the cat food to some of them, and I cooked the groceries for my husband and myself. When it came to doing laundry for my husband and me, we could not afford a washer and dryer, so once a week I walked the one-mile round trip from our home to the Magic Laundromat in downtown Clinton. For 17 years, I carried our laundry in the large cloth bag I had sewn. I carried the bag slung over my shoulder, on my back to and from the laundromat while Kenneth was at work. Some of the people in town who saw me, a 4' 9" tall, 95-pound woman, laughed and called me "Santa Claus," as I carried the large white bag full of laundry down the streets of town. Many times, some of the people who drove past me carrying my load of laundry up the steep hill from downtown, would stop and offer me a ride home. These people made me feel wonderful. I don't remember all of their names, and there were some whose names I never even knew, but I cannot thank all of them enough until now as I write this story in my book. One Christmas eve, I had to do laundry late at night after my husband had come home from a long day of repairing electrical outages from a recent ice storm. Kenneth took me to the laundromat that night in our truck because we had no clean clothes left to wear. It was 10 p.m. when he left me at the

laundromat while he went home to take a nap. About midnight, I had finished packing the clean laundry into the bag, and then I called my husband to come get me. Kenneth was so exhausted from working so many long days that after he answered the phone, he asked me, "Where are you?" I realized my husband was so tired that he had forgotten about taking me to the laundromat. I told him where I was, and then he came and got me. We went home with clean clothes to wear for Christmas Day. I truly loved my dear husband who even though he was feeling wore out, he still came and picked me up that night to bring me home. While Kenneth was at work, sometimes I would work in our yard, mowing the grass with a push mower that ran only on my own physical energy and mental determination. One day while I was working in our yard, an older woman who lived across the street was also working in her yard. She stopped when she saw me and said, "Good morning,” to me. I replied in English, "Good morning." Then, the woman walked across the street toward me. She introduced herself as Mrs. Pearl Riddick. Pearl then asked me, "What is your name?" "My name is Mrs. Thu Welborn,” I answered. Pearl explained to me that she was a widow whose husband had recently passed away. Pearl and I became close friends for 17 years before she also passed away. During our friendship, Pearl taught me basic everyday English. Since she was a widow, my husband would do household repairs and mow the lawn for her in the evenings after his job at the electric company. My husband not only helped Pearl, but also his parents during his time off from his job. Kenneth was a hard-working man who not only wanted to work for the electric company Mondays - Fridays, but he also wanted to earn enough money to build us a bigger house where we would have room for our own washer and dryer. So, my husband decided that after I got my U.S. citizenship, he would go to work as a mechanic on the weekends, twice a month, for the National Guard. He would also have to work two weeks during the summer for the Guard at their annual summer camp. (Thu’s journey as a young wife in a strange land continues in the next issue of The Voice. Fishing Report
Reports are coming in statewide of the bass now in their spawn and also biting well in various Arkansas lakes.
Central Arkansas
Little Red River
(updated 4-42018) Lowell Myers says that Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Greers Ferry Lake has returned to near seasonal pool. Hopefully we see a more favorable generation/ water release schedule over the next few days for wade and drift-fishing. For fly-fishing, Lowell recommend gold ribbed hare’s ear, caddis pupa, sowbugs and streamers. Hot pink and orange bodies on chartreuse heads are recommended for Trout Magnet spin fishing. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Army Corps of Engineers Little Rock District water data system (501-3625150) for Greers Ferry Dam water release.
Greers Ferry Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports
the lake’s elevation at 462.96 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 462.04 feet msl Oct. 1-April 30; 463.04 feet msl May 1-June 1; 462.54 feet msl June 1-Sept. 30). (updated 4-42018) Tommy Cauley of Fishfinder Guide Service (501-9401318) said the water level at Greers Ferry Lake on Tuesday was at 462.95 feet msl and falling. It is 0.91 feet above normal pool of 462.04 feet msl, and will continue to fall with generation. The catching is on and off, hour to hour, day to day, with all the fronts coming and going through the state. Some of the crappie are in the bushes, some are on outside of bushes and some out deeper. All of them can be caught with jigs or minnows or a combination of both. No reports on bream. The black bass are chewing well off and on, getting ready to spawn; use spinnerbaits, crankbaits and
plastics up shallow. In mid-depth use jigheads and jigs. The deeper fish can still be caught on a Carolina rig or football-headed jig. No report or catfish. Most of the river walleye have finished their business and headed back to the lake and the lake fish are getting more active every day; try drop-shots with minnows or grubs, and crankbaits for the best results. The hybrid and white bass are eating and scattered out throughout the lake and river systems; try throwing grubs, inline spinners and flies for the shallower fish, while the deeper fish can be caught on live bait, inline spinners, spoons and swimbaits.
Lake Overcup
(updated 4-42018) Johnny “Catfish” Banks at Overcup Bait Shop and R.V. Park (501-3549007) said bass are doing well around brushtops and struc-
ture around the shoreline. They’re biting on plastic worms, spinnerbaits and minnows. Catfish are being caught on night crawlers around the banks. Bream are slow but should start picking up. Still catching some bream on crickets and redworms. Crappie are doing good on minnows and pink / white/chartreuse jigs around brush and grass around the shore. Water level is high by about 2 feet and clarity is good. Thankfully we didn't get any rain Tuesday.
Lake Maumelle
(updated 4-42018) Jolly Rogers Marina (501-8685558) said the lake is still dropping this week and water temperature from the marina is 60 degrees and about 63 degrees at the west end. Black bass are very good. With water temps in the low 60s and on the water rise the black bass are moving to spawn areas. Try using crankbaits, jerkbaits and jigs in 4-8 feet and 10-15 feet of water. A few can also be caught in shallow water on spinnerbaits or Chatterbaits. This week, the blacks were biting more during dusk and dawn. It should be noted that Gary Bryant and Quin Minton were able to pull in five bass that weighed 12.5 pounds to win Tuesday night’s tournament, along with catching a 4.28 big bass. Kentucky bass are good,

and they are still a little deeper than the largemouth bass. Try the main lake, the rocky shoreline or points with a crankbait or jig for best results. White bass are good. Fewer reports have been coming in on the whites over the past two weeks. Some anglers are saying the whites are staging. Normally the run is over by the first of April. Use Rooster Tails, CC Spoons, deep-diving Bandits, and Bombers for the white bass. Crappie reports have been slow. With the water level falling this past week it has been making it tough on the crappie bite. More reports are coming in of them being found scattered in different depths anywhere from 5 to 20 feet. No reports have come in on bream or catfish.
North Arkansas
Norfork Lake
As of Wednesday, the Army Corps of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 559.54 feet msl (normal conservation pool: September-April 552.00 feet msl; April-September, 554.00 feet msl). (updated 4-42018) Tom Reynolds of STR Outfitters said, “Thank God March is finally over. I have never seen a March like this in terms of weather and fishing. A normal March brings warm days with south winds and some rain. This March was noth-
ing like that, when we did get a warm day with south winds it was followed by cold north winds, rain and cloudy days.” The lake level was 547 feet msl at the beginning of the March and it ended with a lake level of 558 feet and the usual rainy season has not begun yet. “I can only hope we can get some stable weather and that the [Army Corps of Engineers] can run some of this water off before June.” With this being said there are some bright spots, Tom added. The crappie have move shallow in 2 to 3 feet of stained water. The night bite for stripers is strong and the stripers are feeding on big baits. The stripers are still in deep water 15-40 feet of water but they are very shallow in the water column; the fish that are blowing up on Tom’s big baits are less than 10 feet feet deep. Tom says he is running his planer boards with only 5 feet from the board to the bait and stripers are blowing the baits out of the water. Fish are being caught in the Cranfield, Bennett's and Big Creek areas. Fish the points and sharp turns along bluff walls halfway up the creeks. Start looking for topwater action early and late afternoons off the points and bays halfway up the creeks and beyond.

Trained neighbors ready to help
Firefighters brave cold morning to train By Ken Brown
Chow hounds
Safety briefing
Tanker filling a drop tank
Saturday morning when you looked outside to see the snow falling and decided that it was best to crawl back into bed and not go fishing, some of your neighbors already were out there in the cold. Thirty-five of your neighbors from Alread, Bee Branch, Botkinburg, Burnt Ridge Choctaw, Cove Creek and Highway 110 were out early with their respective fire departments doing tanker shuttle training. These ladies and gentlemen spent time Friday night in classroom training on how to do the tanker shuttle, then on Saturday morning they got to put the classroom training to practical use at Choctaw Recreational area where they drafted water from the lake, put it in 2,000 gallon tankers and moved it to another location where they used a fire engine pumper to spray it back into the lake. Tanker shuttle or
hauled water is one way that a community can have adequate water supply for fire fighting even if a fire hydrant is nowhere near the fire. Our domestic water systems were designed and built several years ago. Now these systems have age problems and the community growth has outpaced the systems ability to provide adequate domestic water along with fire fighting capabilities. The tanker shuttle is an answer to providing adequate water supply without putting any stress on the domestic water systems. Many of the 18 volunteer fire departments in Van Buren County have signed automatic aid agreements with each other. This means that when a department is paged out for a structure fire all of its automatic aid departments are also paged at the same time. Equipment (tankers and fire engines) starts to roll to the fire

scene. The first engine on scene sets up to start fighting the fire. A tanker rolls up and puts down a drop tank and empties its load of 2,000 gallons of water for the fire scene engine to start fighting the fire. The empty tanker then goes to be refilled and another tanker rolls up to drop its 2,000 gallons of water. This action is repeated over and over until the fire is out. Most fire departments have pre-established water points where the tankers go to be filled. Sometimes it may be a fire hydrant or a pond or other water source. Therefore, a lot of practicing, so everyone knows where to go and what to do. Another advantage to all of the training is to help the firefighters learn the other departments’ equipment and how if functions. Then in a time of emergency such as a fire they will know what to do on the various types of equipment.
