Water fills streets, covers roads Heavy rain last week led to flooding across Van Buren County. Water was above sidewalk level in downtown Clinton, bridges and many roads were covered, parking lots were ponds. Storms started moving in about 3 p.m. Wednesday and before it was over, more than 1,575 Petit Jean Electric customers lost power, including in the Shirley area, Choctaw, Culpepper, Barrens, Old Highway 9 and other areas. In the Shirley area, two poles were broken. Crews had power restored quickly. After a couple of days of dry, sunny weather, rain and thunderstorms are forecast for this week.
The parking lot in the Northside Mall was under several inches of water Wednesday. More photos, Page 7. (Facebook photo)
Shirley Homecoming The weather was hot but at least there was no rain as scores turned out for the annual Shirley Homecoming on Saturday. There was lots to see and do: Water balloons flew, turtles raced and folks visited with old friends and made new ones. There were vendors and games, food and fun. At 2 p.m., the parade wound its way down the hill from school into town with Grand Marshals Thelma and Jimmy Murray. Saturday night featured a bull riding event and live music. Too soon the 52nd Homecoming became a memory to talk about next year.

Theft of watches spurs arrest An arrest warrant has been issued for a Hot Springs man charged with commercial burglary. Anthony Lynn Walters, 39, is accused of breaking the top off a locked display jewelry case at the Walmart in Clinton on May 22, 2019, and taking eight watches, according to an affidavit for arrest. The value of the watches was placed at $763.87.
The suspect had been caught on a surveillance tape but his identity was not yet known when a Walmart employee reported that the watches had been advertised for sale on a Facebook page. The phone number with the post was at Serenity Ridge on Third Street in Clinton. The resident at the Serenity Ridge address said he had asked Walters to leave
on May 26 because he thought Walters was selling stolen property, according to the affidavit. A neighbor told Clinton Police that he had bought several items from Walters including a Bluetooth speaker, Nighthawk Netgear, Wifi routers, backpacks and watches, according to the court document. He said Walters told him he got the items from

Bear visits FFB neighborhood Fairfield Bay Police responded to a call June 2, 2019, in reference to a black bear causing damage to a bird feeder. The caller stated that the offending bear stole a bird feeder off the back porch of their residence and carried it into the yard. The police department reminds citizens that although it may
seem cuddly and cute, a bear could potentially harm you. They advise folks living in the area of Pine Hill Road to remove any outdoor food for wildlife. The bear has been seen at Tanglewood Circle and Stillwood Circle. Do not approach the bear. Game and Fish will be notified of the situation.

Flag Day - a great day to fly Old Glory I like seeing the American flag when it’s flying from porches, yards, in towns, and over businesses. In church yards, in church sanctuaries beside the Christian flag. I like seeing it displayed along the streets during holidays. And watching our flag formally presented at a rodeo-event by a cowboy or cowgirl on a horse galloping around an arena. It’s extremely sad to see it wrapped over coffins of those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. As Americans, we need to wholeheartedly give our respect to the fallen, and we must teach our children to honor them also, and to believe in our country and accept the chal-
lenge to try and keep it free from all kinds of evil. June 14 is designated as Flag Day. I take our flag seriously. My heart is totally full of pride when I have an opportunity to stand with a crowd, face the flag and recite this: “I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.” The Red, White and Blue, as the song says, is a “Grand Old Flag.” “Proper etiquette for the formal presentation of our flag and the playing of the national anthem is established by the United States Code.
A “short version” of the etiquette is described as follows: “All persons present in uniform should render the military salute. Members of the Armed Forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute. All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand over the heart. Citizens of other countries present should stand at attention. All such conduct toward the flag in a moving column should be rendered at the moment the flag passes. “According to the US Flag Code, all American flags should be displayed from sunrise to sunset every day. Lowering the flag at night is an ultimate sign of respect for Old Glory. But like many rules, there is an exception. You can keep your flag flying 24-hours if it is proper-

ly illuminated during all hours of darkness.” Gene and I keep our flag flying. I’m humbled and thankful to live in a country that is free. I love this country. When I speak of my love for country, my thoughts return to Banner Mountain, that little piece of the earth where my life began, where my love for God and nature and my family began. My memory fails me sometimes. I don’t recall seeing the American Flag for the very first time. I can’t even tell you if there was a flag at the Banner School, nor when I first said the pledge of allegiance. I know only that somewhere along the way I came to believe strongly in our country. And I learned to love the sight of our flag because it’s a symbol of what America stands for – freedom and peace and beauty and all the happiness that brings. I’ll always love to see Old Glory waving. Prickly flower - A cactus flower grows on Fraser Keep her flying high! Street in Clinton. (Photo by Robert Snyder)

Watch “The Great Race” instead One of the more popular fads today is drinking water with lemon in it. Many believe that doing so will help you lose weight. Wouldn’t that be great if that were true. Something as simple and easy as that. But, alas, no, it doesn’t help you lose weight, unless of course you are drinking the lemon water in place of a big ol’ chocolate milkshake. Let me back up a little here before I go too far, drinking water before eating has been found to help people lose weight. A study published in Obesity found that those who drank 16 ounces of water just before eating lost an average 1.2kg over a two-week period versus people who didn’t drink the water. Lemon doesn’t have anything in it that can burn off calories. It does have some Vitamin C. If you ate a whole lemon, you would get about half of the Vitamin C you need in a day’s time. But … who can eat a lem-

Jack Lemon on? Yuck. An orange has even more of this vitamin. I’ll go with that thank you. So, instead of drinking water with lemon in it, I would suggest an alternative … watching a movie with Jack Lemmon in it. Everybody likes “Grumpy Old Men,” or “The Apartment.” But if you haven’t watched “The Great Race,” do so, your sore ribs will thank me later. - Ron Henson, BSRN

Step back in time Flood of 1982 Last week’s rain and flooding was reminiscent of some dark days back in December 1982 when downtown Clinton was under 8 to 10 feet of water and the only way to go through town was by boat. The devastation from what was called a 100-year flood was widespread, flooding the entire business district. Some of those businesses never rebounded. Here are a few photos from Dec. 3, 1982.
High water travel - Burt Bradley en route to Shirley, Arkansas in January 1917 encountered some high water.
75th anniversary of D-Day On June 6, 1944, more than 160,000 Allied troops landed along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified French coastline, to fight Nazi Germany on the beaches of Normandy, France. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade in which, “we will accept nothing less than full victory.” More than 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by day’s end, the Allies gained a foot-hold in Continental Europe. The cost in lives on D-Day was high. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded, but their sacrifice allowed more than 100,000 soldiers to begin the slow, hard slog across Europe, to defeat Adolf Hitler’s crack troops. Several men from Van Buren County fought in World War II. Here are a few of them:
John Sneed
John W Sneed Jr. was born on October 15, 1915. He graduated from Clinton High School in 1932 at age 16. He studied Pre-Med at Arkansas State Teachers College, now University of Central Arkansas, then graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1938 at age 22. Fishing Report
Murphy Thomas (red shirt) caught this 50-pound blue catfish at Cane Creek Lake near Star City recently. He needed a little help from Jacob Jacks to hold it up for the photo. Thomas and Jacobs were noodling in the lake. Photo provided by Austin Davidson, Cane Creek Lake State Park.

Little Red River
(updated 5-292019) Lowell Myers of Sore Lip’em All Guide Service said the Army Corps of Engineers is releasing 12 hours of two units of generation daily. This generation pattern is providing small windows of wading opportunities on the upper sections of the river early mornings and on the middle and lower sections later in the day. With the water release of two full units of generation, the river will rise quickly. If wading, be observant of changing water levels and be aware of your surroundings for your safety. This pattern is also providing excellent drift-fishing on all sections. Use sowbugs, emergers, San Juan worms and streamers for fly-fishing. For Trout Magnet fishing use cotton candy and hot pink bodies on chartreuse jigheads. Always check before heading to the Little Red River by calling the Corps of Engineers Lit-

ceeded the standards of professionalism and courtesy. I know what it is like to wear a badge and how difficult the job can be. Their professional presence was just outstanding, in my opinion. “Now on to the fishing! Fishing has been great, that's all there is to it. The trout have been hitting on various PowerBaits fished with light terminal tackle. Spoons once again have been doing the job as well. The ‘hot spot’ has been between Parker Bottoms and Bertrand Access. A few white bass were schooled up near Spider Creek for a couple days. The bass were hitting on X-Raps, U-rigs and soft plastics suspended. Spotted bass were caught between Beaver and Holiday Island – fishing the coves, structure and chunk rock produced the best bite. Suspended hard baits and tube jigs seemed to be the bait of choice. “Folks! The walleye are still in the river, but spread out. You have to get out and look for them, but they are there. I have caught five this past week in different areas. Try fishing points, bends and deep pockets during the day. Jigging live minnows, trolling a crawler harness or suspended hard bait, was the preferred method. Water temperatures have been in the low 50s from Houseman, dipping into the mid to upper 40s near the Highway 62 bridge. We have some rain forecasted this week, but do not let that keep you from enjoying the bite. Have fun, be safe and catch some fish.”
