Back to school means watch for kids Back to school time is an important event for our entire community. Students are back in class. Teachers are implementing new lesson plans for the school year. Administrators are working with budgets, school bus routes, staffing and school safety concerns. Parents are coordinating work and school schedules, car pools and support for their student’s activities and studies. Businesses are equipping families, teachers and administrators with the supplies they need for a successful school year. Back to school is a busy time for us all. During this busy time, please be extra cautious in traffic. Be mindful of our school traffic zones especially during the morning hours and early after-
noons. Keep an extra look out for potential hazards around our schools and in neighborhoods where children play. Slow down and increase your stopping distances. School buses are back on the road. Be aware of school bus routes in your neighborhood and throughout your daily travel. Leave plenty of time and space for buses. With school traffic, anticipate delays in your travel and leave early so you’re not in a rush. And, when approaching a school zone or school bus on the road, be prepared to stop for bus and pedestrian traffic. Our children are counting on us – let’s work together to make “back to school” a rewarding, fun, and safe time for all Van Buren County residents. — Sheriff Lucas Emberton

Covid cases rising in county Just as school buildings are reopening, Van Buren County’s Covid-19 numbers are going up rapidly. County Judge Dale James said the cases are mostly within two "communities" of people. One of those “communities” is Global Foods, James said. He said the company has done an “exceptional job” at keeping the virus out of the facility up to this point. Global Foods is actively testing their workforce, James
said. “You will see our cases rise as testing will be broad and thorough.” Across the state, schools are welcoming back students. Some are phasing in re-entry while others have decided to stay with online studies for now. In Van Buren County, the buildings are reopened but parents have the option to keep their children home and go the online route. For more information, contact your school district.

County Clerk Pam Bradford said that is all the State Board of Elections would reimburse the county for meetings the Election Commission held earlier this year. The state sets the reimbursement limit at 10 meetings; the county’s Election Commission held 26 meetings in the first couple of months of 2020. After a heated

Shortly before that meeting, Rhoda and Silva were accused of breaking the lock on a trailer owned by the Boy Scouts. They subsequently were charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief. In the lawsuit, the Rectors allege they were at a bonfire at the home of Martin “Sonny” Clifford and Kim Mongold in May 2019 when Clifford’s police dog, Silas, bit Michelle Rector causing her to lose full use of her arm permanently. Michelle Rector has lost wages, lost earning capacity, incurred extensive medical bills, exceeding $500,000.00, been scarred, and has incurred other damages in an amount to be proven at trial, the complaint alleges. The complaint states that the Heber Springs Police Department donated the dog to Van Buren County because Silas had a history of aggression and non-commanded bites, even with his handler, and they de-

There is nothing more serene than watching a field of butterflies feeding and fluttering. And starting your own field for the winged beauties is a pretty simple thing to do. Another essential for the butterfly garden is sun. Butterflies are cold-blooded creatures and your garden should receive six hours or more of direct sunlight. The change comes from the lack of classes the AGFC has been able to offer during the midst of the Covid-19 crisis.
Dorene and Jack Towery of Shirley have made a $5,000 donation to Van Buren Imagination Library.
Donation to pay for VBC kids’ books Van Buren County Reads received a $5,000 donation to Van Buren County Imagination Library from Jack and Dorene Towery of Shirley, Arkansas. The money will be used solely to pay for Imagination Library books for children in Van Buren County. Since 2018, 9,451 books have been mailed to young children in Van Buren County. The Towerys have been supporters of Van Buren County Imagination Library since its beginning in 2018. They were the first individual donor to the program. They gave a generous donation so that parents of children in the Shirley School District could begin enrolling their children immediately. The couple continued supporting Imagination Library with a donation in 2019 and now 2020. “We think it [Imagination Library] is a good cause,” Jack Towery said. “We try to donate to things that are good and will do people good.” He went on to say he likes Imagina-
tion Library because it helps kids. The donation comes at a critical time for Van Buren County Imagination Library. Due to impact of Covid-19 fundraising to pay for the books was inadequate to meet the book invoices. In May 2020, online registration stopped due to lack of funds. Without additional funds, the program would have ceased to operate in October 2020. However, the financial picture of Van Buren County Reads is improving. The organization received a $3,500 from the Comprehensive Literacy State Development (CLSD)-Arkansas Imagination Library Emergency Book Assistance Grant to pay the book invoices for the months of June through September. As a result of that grant, online registration was once again available to parents with children under 5. not seen our daughters since Christmas. We recently were visited by our granddaughter and her family. We social distanced on the porch. It was good to see them. And our great-grandkids gave me my first “air hug.” Their smiles and laughter were “tonic for my soul.” And now and then, despite better judgement, it’s like you just need a hug from your grandkid, after so long a while. Emotional health is important too. Perhaps more important than we realize. Especially to our young ones, our grandchildren. My husband, who has back problems, recently developed severe and constant back pain. He made an appointment with his surgeon but it would be three weeks before he could be seen. His pain became so excruciating that we called an ambulance to take him to the ER. When the ambulance came, the paramedics were wearing masks, and my husband had on a mask. When asked what level his pain was, on a scale of one to 10, my husband replied, “10.” He was wheeled out to the ambulance and I wait-

My husband and I have been sheltered in place, staying at home as much as possible, since March when Covid-19 showed up, posing a threat to our lives. I had had minor surgery in February. My husband also had had minor surgery in early March. While recovering from the surgeries, and because of our age, we were at a higher risk for catching the virus. Our son and daughter-in-law began bringing our groceries and we managed to social distance, even from them. We worried about them being exposed to crowds at the store. So far, no one in our family has gotten Covid-19. And we’re very thankful! Our church was closed for a time, but soon re-opened and services are being held there and also livestreamed through Facebook. We still don’t attend services because of the virus threat. The church does follow guidelines, wearing masks and social dis-

watch the service on the iPad. Very different, but it’s a routine and good until such time that we feel comfortable going back into the sanctuary for worship services. We’ve rescheduled many doctor appointments. But rescheduling hasn’t been much help because the virus cases continue to rise. It doesn’t go away. In fact, it’s infecting people we know, people who are not just a number. It’s moving in closer to extended families. And just when you think it may be slowing down, you get word that someone with the virus has died. And it’s not always a person with underlying conditions. Sometimes it’s a young person. The virus is, indeed, an invisible enemy. It almost seems like no one knows for sure what to do, or what not to do, to avoid catching the virus. By now, we are driving to pick up groceries by curb service, venturing out to some extent, but still receiving help from our kids. We’ve
ed on the porch. I knew I’d not be allowed in the hospital with him because of the restrictions. Our son would follow the ambulance by car. And he would have to wait in the parking lot. I fully expected the ER to admit my husband to the hospital, as I watched the ambulance leave our driveway. On back of the ambulance were these words: In God We Trust. Those words comforted me. And like an answer to prayer, my husband’s pain was managed and he was sent home to wait for his appointment with the surgeon. And now, with physical therapy, his back problem is healing. Wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance has become routine, day in and day out. Stay away from crowds. Not everyone follows the guidelines. But most people are trying to, as best they can. I miss my life the way it was before Covid-19 appeared. Like everyone else, I hope it disappears soon, never to crop up again. Many years ago, as a child at Banner Mountain, I walked barefoot down a dusty road, always happy.

Serving on the county Quorum Court my future goal is the betterment and growth of Van Buren County and I can continue to do so in the absence of an organized Republican political party.”

of Engineers reports the lake’s elevation at 681.68 feet msl (normal conservation pool: 661.20 feet msl). Table Rock Lake above Bull Shoals on Wednesday was at 916.84 feet msl (normal conservation pool is 917.00 feet msl). (updated 8-192020) Del Colvin at Bull Shoals Lake Boat Dock says the Army Corps of Engineers continues to limit access to ramps and parking; customers/boaters/anglers should call first, especially on weekends. Del says the bass bite is changing a little every day now. The Corps is pumping water out of the lake, and this has the fishing moving out on points. There is plenty of baitfish suspended deep off the points; generally it runs 10-15 feet depth early and then drops to 2028 feet later in the day. If it’s hot, go deep, he says. If it’s cloudy and windy, work shallow. Throw topwater baits in the mornings. Berkley Wake Bait, poppers, a Whopper Plopper, buzzbait or chatterbaits are best for powerfishing shallow if it’s cloudy or stormy. Target shallow flats close to old creek channels with shad. During the day, smallies and spotted bass (Kentucky bass) are stacked out on main and secondary points, sunken islands, humps, channel swing bluffs and bluff ends. With shad present, fish position will change depending on sun, wind, current, clouds, etc. Still a lot of places for them to hide with high water, so keep it moving.
