2 seek Zone 3 School Board seat Longtime Clinton School Board member Kirk Pryor has an an opponent in his re-election bid – Darrin “D.L.” Webb. The Zone 3 race
is the only one of the three school boards in the county to have two people vying for the position. A second seat on the Clinton School Board
was also up for grabs, but only one candidate filed in the race. Brent Treadaway will be filling the Zone 6 seat. In the South Side-
Bee Branch District, the one seat that was up for re-election did not draw a challenger. In Shirley, only one candidate – Andrea Brown – filed for
a seat on the board, which has been open since spring. Early voting for the School Board election begins Sept. 12, and Election Day
is Sept. 19. The school millage rate is 36.8 mills in Clinton and South Side, and 3.5. mills in Shirley.

After mentioning how green the forest was last week I began to notice hints of season change: sumac turning red, poison ivy and grapevine leaves turning yellow, a bit of burgundy on some dogwood leaves. The earth continues to turn on its axis while revolving around the sun. Which reminds me, I traveled to Sullivan, Missouri, to see the total eclipse of the sun a couple of weeks back. The Chamber of Commerce there had eclipse glasses, t-shirts, food and drink for sale. Watch parties were organized on the fairgrounds, park and elsewhere. Businesses advertised "eclipse specials." I-44 was bumper to bumper for miles afterward as people headed home. Surprisingly night insects called loudly as totality approached. The
simultaneously expressed sounds of awe, wonder, amazement, and admiration as the sun was covered and day became night. April 8, 2024 a longer and darker total eclipse of the sun will pass directly over Van Buren County. Seems like we might be able to benefit from that happy fact. "Blooms of Note" going on now: moon flower (night bloomers), garlic chives and goldenrod. If you have info about the greater Crabtree and 16 West community call Jeff Burgess, 745-1249.

Her horse was pulled from the race at 35 miles due to a rapid heartbeat. While in California they visited Mare Island where LD worked in the shipyard during WWII. Josh Beckham Jr.
Josh Beckham Jr., of Shirley, Arkansas, previously of Vestal, New York, passed peacefully at home on August 25, 2017 at the age of 87 surrounded by his sons. Josh was born on August 23, 1930 to Joshua and Anne Beckham in Shirley, Arkansas. He was born into the Great Depression, the youngest of seven children, and the last surviving member of that generation. He is predeceased by Tommy (died in infancy), Oma, Ina, Allen, Richard, Nimuel, and Ella. As a young boy he grew up helping his father sharecrop parcels of land around the Shirley area. In high school, Josh was voted captain of the Shirley basketball team. In the late 1940s, he was offered a job with his brother Nimuel in Massachusetts with the Socony Oil and Vacuum Co., a pre-cursor to the Mobil Pipeline Co., the company he would work for until his retirement. The title for his

first job was “Roustabout,” which Dad would say translated to ditch-digger. In 1952 he was called to serve the Army in Korea. As a member of the 822nd Engineer Aviation Battalion as a heavy equipment operator, he helped construct many of the forward air bases used to fight the North Korean army. Many of those air bases are still in use today. Upon returning home after his service, his pipeline crew relocated to the place he would spend the majority of his life, the town of Vestal, New York. He met the love of his life in February 1954 and they were married in October 1954 and raised two sons - Terry Beckham and Josh Beckham. Josh worked for the Mobil Pipeline Company for 37 years, working his way up from pipe-liner, to gang pusher, to construction foreman. His work ethic and professionalism allowed him to be called upon for major Mobil Oil projects involving important extensions of the Mobil pipeline systems in Irwin, PA, Seattle, WA, Mobile, AL and the trans-Saudi pipeline in Saudi Arabia that stretched across the Saudi peninsula. He was an avid sports fan all of his life, especially collegiate basketball and football. Josh was also a race fan, a NY Yankees fan, and enjoyed family trips to Florida for spring training baseball. He loved life and loved to travel with his wife (especially Hawaii and Germany) to visit family and friends. After a series of challenges and brave battle, he passed from us to find peace and be reunited with his wife, Mary, who left him in September of 2015. He is survived by son Terry and wife Francesca, son Josh, six grandchildren (Derek and wife Kristi, Erika, Alaina, Nate, Janise, Josephine) and three great-grandchildren (Blaise, Lucas, and Everett), many “favorite” nieces and nephews, great-nieces and
nephews. He once told his sons that when his days were done, he would like to simply be remembered as an honest man. He was much more than that. A memorial visitation was held in his honor Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Clinton, Arkansas. Funeral services and interment are under the care of Allen Funeral Home in Endicott, New York.

Your chance to make a difference By Anita Tucker/Editor The Voice of Van Buren County
Early voting in local school board elections starts Sept. 12, culminating in Election Day on Sept. 19. There is competition for only one seat on all three school boards; that is Zone 3 in Clinton. D.L. Webb is challenging longtime board member Kirk Pryor for a five-year term on the School Board. Zone 6 also was open; only one canDear Editor: This letter is to the Shirley Community: My purpose is to set the record straight on my retirement. I had initially planned to return to Shirley School District for one more year. I did not retire to “play with my grandkids” as was falsely reported in a recent school board meeting. I left Shirley School District because of a hostile work environment for selected faculty and staff and I believe this hostile work environment was directed by the administration. Most of the faculty does not trust this administration and for good reason. The administration leads through bullying, intimidation and in some cases through humiliation. I know this from firsthand experience. On numerous occasions teachers were summoned to the office during the middle of a class then they were read a letter by the principal alleging they were guilty of willful insubordination and that their jobs were in jeopardy. The teacher then returned to their class carrying the letter. Most of the teachers were upset and every student in those classes knew what had just happened. As a retired Army officer, I understand what insubordination means. None of these teachers, to include me, were guilty of willful insubordination nor did we deserve the blatant disrespect we were afforded. The problem at Shirley School District is that the school is led by a superintendent that was removed from the elementary classroom because of an alleged altercation with another teacher. She was moved to a made-up position in the administration and consolidated power doing the work of lazy superintendents looking to retire. She was selected as superintendent by a tonedeaf School Board during a search process that was tainted by the presence of the retiring superintendent. This same School Board recently told the superintendent that she did not have the right person-

didate filed for that seat. In the South Side School District, Position 3 was open; there were no challengers for that seat. And in the Shirley School District, only one candidate filed for a seat that has been open since spring. Wouldn’t it be great if every seat open had two or three people seeking to fill it? What if people were already asking when the seat in their zone will be open so they can start be-
coming informed and making plans to run for it or start lining up some good candidates? Sometimes boards get too comfortable and stagnate with the same personalities running them year after year. Competition is good. And, frankly, I would like to see some voices on the Clinton School Board calling for more openness at the meetings. Attendance at school board meetings is notoriously low, but the
public might be more interested if they didn’t have to spend the majority of the evening cooling their heels in the hallway waiting for an executive session to end. Here’s what I mean: January 2017 – Executive session 6:43 p.m.-8:52 p.m.; February 2017 – Executive session 6:23 p.m.-8:14 p.m.; March – Executive session 6:01 p.m.6:54 p.m.; April – Executive session, 6:25 p.m.-7:31 p.m.; May – Executive session
6:40 p.m.-7:32 p.m.; June – Executive session 5:30 p.m.-6:52 p.m. I know personnel matters are for executive session, I understand that. But how long does that take? Here were the reported resulted from the January meeting when the board was in executive session for 2 hours and 9 minutes: Accepted a resignation; hired a teacher; hired a custodian; hired a bus driver; extended the superintendent’s contract for two years and gave him a $2,000 bonus.
ality or temperament for the job after giving her a two-year extension on her contract. Recently I attended a retirement ceremony of a good friend of mine at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. The guest speaker spoke of honor, loyalty, character, integrity and courage. I find none of these characteristics in the administration of the Shirley School District. To support my judgment, I will provide one of many examples. There was a teacher last year who was targeted by the administration throughout the year. The teacher was given a letter of no rehire in May. The teacher contacted an attorney who threatened the school with legal action in support of the teacher. The administration quickly backed down and gave the teacher a glowing letter of recommendation in exchange for her resignation. How can you go from a no rehire to a letter of recommendation in two weeks? I’ll tell you how, we have a dishonest administration with absolutely no integrity. They think the ends justify the means. As a side note, this teacher received excellent marks in her formal classroom evaluation. The story continues. We find out this summer that the teacher was targeted to open the teaching position for a relative of the superintendent. In conclusion, the purpose of this letter is two-fold. First, it is an attempt on my part to atone for the many times I’ve stood silent and watched my colleagues get abused. I publicly apologize to them for not doing the right thing. Secondly, I hope this serves as a wakeup call to the community. The work climate at Shirley School District is toxic. I do not believe the school will survive without major changes in the administration. The number of staff and faculty departing the past two years is staggering for a school the size of Shirley and I think that in itself speaks volumes.
Dear Editor: My kids are having an amazing school year. They have been greeted by an amazing faculty, staff and administration. My son is enjoying shop class with Mrs. Simms, my daughter is taking AP classes and both are playing sports and making future plans for continuing their education. I believe that our faculty, staff, administration and School Board have our children's safety, education and wellbeing close to their hearts. Our School Board is made up of humble giving people. We have all personally witnessed them all give of their time, money to promote our youth and I feel they truly have best intentions to govern our school district. I'm thankful for each of these people and there is not a teacher, staff member, administrator or School Board member that deserves to be slandered on social media the way we have all witnessed. I really wish that people would see that spreading rumors is extremely damaging to our communities. And yes, I say rumors because as far as I know there are no complaints being heard by the Arkansas Board of Education. Rumors without facts is just libelous, damaging slander. And do we really want to hurt the children, spouses, parents, relatives and friends of people committed to making our school a better place? I pray not. If anyone wants to make a positive difference, I suggest volunteering your time, giving words of encouragement to every soul in our campuses. There is a time and place for criticism: call the superintendent’s office, get on the agenda for the next meeting and voice your concerns! But please, don't spread rumors, or make it look OK to our youth to bash our teachers, staff administration or School Board members. I take it personally because Shirley Public Schools raised me. From Headstart to 11th
grade. Anna Mae Johnson filled my stomach and soul, Mrs. Gloria Renfroe, Betty Clark, Carolyn Tobey, Tyrene Gardner, Coach Benny Brown and Doris Brown have forever impacted my life and to that I am grateful. I'm sad with the way things are today, but I have faith that things can change. Many of us were raised in a different time. Where your neighbor was your friend that came to hold your hand in
your darkest hour, that wanted the best for you and your family and only wished you well. Adults didn't encourage our youth to be disrespectful and lash out and slander other adults ... we are all better than this, our little school community and most importantly our youth need and deserve adults that can show them how to love their neighbors and create a bright, promising drama free future ... together!

Two hours and nine minutes? Is that normal? No, that’s ridiculous. I see in the minutes that the South Side School Board went into executive session for 7 minutes in May. That’s more like it. C’mon, Clinton School Board, bring it out in the sunshine. Being a good school board member is hard work, no pay, and little thanks. But the reward is being part of making our schools and communities great. We’d love to see more people who think it’s worth the effort. Shirley will rise above, Shirley will heal. We must mend our fences, we must be better neighbors, we must not think of our pride and selfish ambitions. Amazing things are happening at our school, I would like to see our community pool together as one, volunteer, become informed of what's really happening and promote our school for the treasure it is! Jackets take down Heber By Robert R. Gaut and Anita Tucker
The Clinton Yellow Jackets defeated Heber Springs 28-17 on Friday evening in the Battle of the Little Red, keeping the trophy for a second year in a row. After a Yellow Jacket punt in the first quarter, the Panthers moved the ball down the field well, taking only five plays before scoring with a 61-yard touchdown grab. The extra point was good and Heber Springs took an early 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, senior Charleston Sowell intercepted a Panther pass, but the Jackets gave the ball back on a fumble the next play. After a pass interference call, then an offensive penalty, Heber Springs kicked a field goal from the 10 and took the lead 10-0. But the tide began to turn as sophomore quarterback Weston Amos picked up a

Entertainment The
Music Scene
Jeff Stansbery
Music is everywhere It would probably surprise us at how many places we hear music and where we get the influences for the music we love. Many of the famous singers in country, rock and roll and blues got their start singing in church. The church hones the talents of many people; and kids often begin learning at a young age in church. The school is another place where young talent can be spotted and trained to mature musically whether in the choir or the band. Many families in Arkansas are musical and some of that talent is passed down from generation to generation. Many family gatherings revolve around an evening of music and singing. Music is a way to escape the tedious rigors of everyday work and school life. It can be relaxing and enjoyable to just kick back and play an instrument or just sing. The radio is a good medium to enjoy listening to and singing along with just to unwind. Then, there is the popularity of karaoke. This gives singers an opportunity to emulate their favorite singer or band (usually in a setting where those listening can encourage them); and often, it is a way to help them showcase their own unique singing style. Many times we are oblivious to the music that is around us. It could be that we are
so used to having it in the background while we're shopping that we have become desensitized to it. Sometimes we just subconsciously attempt to block out the music. Other times we hum along if we recognize the song and it's one we like. In doctor's offices, business offices and elevators, they often play what is often referred to as "elevator music." It's often so far in the background that you can barely hear it – but there are studies that say that this background music has a soothing or calming effect on people. We recognize the organ music at a baseball game. Football games have marching bands. Some restaurants have a piano player or guitar player who plays softly while patrons eat their supper. Music is everywhere! Sometimes we can hear it in the howling of the wind. Then the birds have their own melodies. Even the crickets chirp their songs endlessly at night. Well, I didn't say they were necessarily soothing melodies for everyone. It may just be pretty to another cricket. As mentioned earlier, many singers began their careers in church. Some have claimed that Elvis could have easily been a cantor. He got his start in a small house in Memphis, Tennessee where he lived under the same roof as Rabbi Alfred
and Jeanette Frutcher. While spending time there, he became close with the rabbi's family, close enough, according to Forward, that much of the King's music was influenced by Jewish cantorial music. It is obvious that Elvis never forgot his roots, for some of his best recordings were that of old standard hymns. Katy Perry almost went into gospel music. Have you ever heard of Katy Hudson? She's Katy Perry, the larger-than-life pop star that's been making waves across the country. According to MTV, Perry got her start in a Christian community, and soon after, tried to make her mark in the gospel music industry. But when things didn't work out and her albums wouldn't sell, she transitioned into pop. Country singer Faith Hill sang Christian music and was in a band. She began in a local Baptist church, according to Biography. Around the same time, Hill joined a band that toured the local spots and played at both fairs and rodeos. Carrie Underwood was a Christian singer. Underwood's fame didn't come easily, according to BeliefNet. In fact, Underwood got her start singing in the choir at the Free Will Baptist Church in Oklahoma. It wasn't until she performed on "American Idol" that Underwood rose to her current status of fame.

Jessica Simpson is the daughter of a pastor, and she used to sing in her local church as a child. The list goes on. Many singers and musicians got their start in church at a young age. Many, like Elvis, never forgot their religious background and made recordings of gospel music after they had achieved success singing pop or country. Great music comes from the soul; and when it is unleashed, it's like a wild-fire spreading everywhere, touching everyone in some way. There are music prodigies who absorb music like a sponge and can learn very rapidly, whereas it would take most people years to learn. One such prodigy was Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He was a prolific and influential composer of the classical era. Born in Salzburg, he showed prodigious ability from this earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of 5 and performed before European royalty. At 17, Mozart was engaged as a musician at the Salzburg Court, but grew restless and traveled in search of a better position. While visiting
September 5, 2017 Vienna, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. Then, there are those who had aspirations of doing something else, but changed their mind for the love of music. Such is the case with Jack White, lead singer of the White Stripes. White almost became a priest. In fact, he was being called to it, according to Gigwise, an entertainment and music website. White was accepted to seminary in Wisconsin, but at the last minute decided to pull away and get into music, CBS news reported. So, what about those musicians who won't be put in a box when it comes to doing the music they love? Singer-songwriter, John Mayer started off with primarily acoustic pop tunes to get his name out there and make money. Then he'd do incredible blues covers at his live shows because that was what he grew up on. Af-
ter doing a combination of pop/rock and then switch to soul/ blues on "Continuum" (often regarded as his best work) Mayer did something totally different – two folk Americana/roots albums. It was very honest work that highlighted Mayer’s versatility. There is a movie I highly recommend if you haven't seen it called "August Rush." Those of you who have seen it know what I'm talking about when I say that this is a great movie for anyone who loves music. It focuses on a young boy who hears music in everything surrounding him. It is an awesome story as well because it shows how effortless music can flow for those who are really into it. Besides the main plot of a boy trying to find his parents through the power of music, the main gist of the movie is summed up in this most powerful lesson: “Music is everywhere; and all we have to do to hear it is listen.”

Enjoy the beauty of Arkansas’ rivers and lakes.
North Arkansas
White River
(update 8-302017) John Berry of Berry Brothers Guide Service in Cotter (870-435-2169) said that during the past week, they had a rain event (just a trace in Cotter), unseasonably cool temperatures and moderate winds. The lake level at Bull Shoals as of last weekend had dropped 3 feet to rest at 15 feet above seasonal power pool of 661 feet msl. This is 19 feet below the top of flood pool. Upstream, Table Rock remained steady at 0.1 feet below seasonal power pool and 14.1 feet below the top of flood pool. Beaver Lake rose 0.2 feet to rest at 5.8 feet above seasonal power pool and 2.8 feet below the top of flood pool. On the White, there was no wadable water with heavy generation. Hopper season is here. Many guides are banging the bank with grasshopper patterns. Add a nymph dropper (ruby midge) to increase
Page 15
takes. If the grasshopper is hit or sinks, set the hook. John’s favorite grasshopper pattern is a western pink lady. On the White, the hot spot has been the catch-and-release section at Bull Shoals Dam. The hot flies were olive Woolly Buggers (sizes 8, 10), Y2Ks (sizes 14, 12), prince nymphs (size 14), zebra midges (black with silver wire and silver bead or red with silver wire and silver bead sizes 16, 18), pheasant tails (size 14), ruby midges (size 18), root beer midges (size 18), pink and cerise San Juan worms (size 10), and sowbugs (size 16). Double-fly nymph rigs have been very effective (John’s current favorite is a bead-head pheasant tail nymph (size 14) with a ruby midge suspended below it). Use lots of lead and long leaders to get your flies down. John also says, “One way to improve your fishing is to keep a fishing journal. The idea is to write down all the applicable information pertaining
to the day you spent fishing. That way you have a reference for planning your next day on the river. My friend Mike has been recording all of his days on the water in a leather fishing journal for years. If he cannot get on the water, he reviews the log to relive memorable days fishing. I maintain my journal on my computer and refer to it often. I use it to prepare for upcoming days on the river, and I refer to it when writing about my day on the river. “I always record the weather. I like to know the high and low temperature, whether it is sunny or overcast, how windy it was, any type of precipitation on that day or the previous one and if a major front comes through. I also record what I wear, if it is particularly hot, cold or wet. I follow up this with a notation of how that worked out. Did I need another layer or did my feet get cold or wet? “I take a bit of time to record the water conditions. This affects the
quality of the fishing more than anything. I always record where I was fishing and how much water they were running. If there was a big push, what time did it reach where I was fishing and how did it affect the catch? I always record that in cubic feet per second because that is the most precise measurement. I will make a note about the most productive spots that I fished. “Several guides and anglers that I know fish with a clicker and carefully record each and every fish that they catch. They then record this and even tally up how many trout they catch in a year. This is more like accounting to me than fishing. If I wanted to keep up with a bunch of numbers, I would still be a CPA. I will post an estimate on a really productive day. “What I am more interested in is to record the catching of an interesting trout. When I land a nice brook or a Bonneville cutthroat, I make a note of it. A big brown or a rainbow is also noted. I always record the fly I used and exactly where it was caught. I always note what the most productive fly was on that day. “Finally I write down anything out of the ordinary that happened on that particular day. I once observed 14 deer swim the White River at Rim Shoals. On another day, I had

to stop my car to allow a flock of turkeys (over 50 birds) cross the road as I was driving into the Dam Three Access on the Spring River. “My most memorable experience was when I watched Dave Whitlock and Flip Pallot film a television show (an episode of the “Walker’s Cay Chronicles”) at Rim Shoals. It was fascinating just to watch the process. I was amazed to watch Dave’s ability with a dry fly. The most interesting thing was that I had walked by that stretch of water for decades and never stopped to fish it. I now fish there any chance that I get. It is now one of my favorite spots to fish dry flies. “I have been keeping a journal for almost 20 years and really enjoy the process. It has been a great source of information of past trips and has made me a better fly-fisher. I think that it can do the same for you.”
Central Arkansas
Little Red River
(update 8-302017) Greg Seaton of littleredflyfishingtrips.com (501-6909166) said the fishing is good on the Little Red with rainbows the best bite, but browns are also adding to the mix. Greg said he had a good afternoon Sunday using an olive Woolly Bugger at the bottom of a shoal. This was a little un-
usual since most of the action has been on small flies such as midge pupas and emergers (size 20). The river has been very clear and with the slower currents, the presentation and light tippets have been very important to the angler’s success. Greg also asks anglers and anyone else to please mark their calendars for the river cleanup Saturday, Sept. 9. Trout Unlimited Chapter 722 and Little Red River Foundation will sponsor the event with registration starting at 7 a.m. at the pavilion on the campus of ASU-Heber Springs, and participants returning to this location will have hamburgers and hot dogs and all the trimmings at noon. Dumpsters will be provided at this location to deposit your trash. Greg says, “Hope to see all of you there since this is a chance to help the river that provides a great deal of enjoyment to all of us. Have a good time cleaning the river in the morning, sharing a good lunch with friends and fishing that afternoon.” If you have questions or want to register early for your section of the river and avoid coming to the pavilion before heading to the river, please call Greg at 501-6909166 or John at 501920-3825.
