Yara Shahidi

When actress Yara Shahidi stepped out at the SAG awards on Jan. 21 in a custom Ralph Lauren jumpsuit and Jimmy Choo platforms, the “Blackish” star was heralded as one of the best-dressed celebs on the red carpet. Two days later, the rising star was at Chanel’s couture show in Paris — where she wore on-trend clear boots from the label’s spring ’18 collection with a simple gray dress. ➵ Shahidi is just one young Hollywood star who is grabbing major fashion attention this season. ➵ With the Oscars about a month away, top designers tout the red carpet as an vital brand-building vehicle. “It’s always important as it gives great visibility,” said Edgardo Osorio, founder and creative director at Aquazzura. “What has changed over the years is that there is so much more coverage from so many more events.” ➵ Here, designers and stylists weigh in on eight up-and-comers to know now.

GAL GADOT No stranger to blockbuster films, having had a recurring role in the “Fast & Furious” franchise since 2009, Gal Gadot gained unwavering worldwide

stardom for her performance in “Wonder Woman” last year. “Gal is such a beautiful woman. She can pull off [anything] she wants,” said Giuseppe Zanotti.

Gadot has opted to wear the designer at various events, including for her “Justice League” press tour, where a sophisticated Stella McCartney jumpsuit was paired with his classic black pumps. The actress is known to make a statement in neutral-colored heels. Her showstopping metallic Prada dress at the Critic’s Choice Awards was finished with Gianvito Rossi’s Carlyle sandals in black patent leather. And at a Variety brunch this month, she balanced out a bubblegum-pink Oscar de la Renta suit with nude stilettos by Stuart Weitzman. “Gal’s style is simple, clean, strong, and that extends to her shoes,” said her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart. She recounts the Mexico premiere of “Wonder Woman” as one of her fondest styling moments with the actress — Gadot wore Rocket Dog flip-flops hidden underneath her Prada gown. “She’s not afraid to rock a flat like the Aldo sandals mixed with Givenchy gown at the Los Angeles ‘Wonder Woman’ premiere,” Stewart said. “She’s a Stuart Weitzman Nudist all the way, [but] I love it when she breaks out, like the Rene Caovilla sparklers wrapped up her ankle at [the National Board Review] awards in New York.” After her star-maker female superhero film, designers are clamoring to dress her. “It is such a pleasure when she wears my shoes,” said Zanotti.

TIFFANY HADDISH After her breakthrough role in the hit movie “Girls Trip,” Tiffany Haddish is a certified household name. She made history as the first black female standup comic to host “Saturday Night Live.” For the show, Haddish selected Stuart Weitzman sandals and proudly repeated a $4,000 Alexander McQueen gown — the dress she wore for her red carpet look at the “Girls Trip” premiere. “We want to enter the fashion game strong,” said her stylist, Bryon Javar, who has worked with the actress since September. “We are starting to take risks and go in a different direction that comics don’t normally go in.” Perfectly fitted Styland pantsuits have become a signature, while Javar lists brands Loriblu and Le Silla as “comfortable” and “sexy” go-to shoes. Red carpet mainstays are also fair game for footwear;

Haddish recently sported Jimmy Choo heels to host the Oscar nomination announcements. With her event circuit ramping up, so will her vault of memorable looks. “She wants to be a comic icon but also a fashion icon,” said Javar.

ISSA RAE “On carpets, we are looking to have fun. Fashion is great but shouldn’t be taken so seriously,” said Issa Rae’s stylist, Jason Rembert. It’s no surprise, then, that an upbeat tempo sets the mood for Rae’s looks. The actress rose to fame with the hit HBO show “Insecure” — which she created and writes for — a comedy loosely based on Rae’s “Awkward Black Girl” YouTube series. On the big screen, she proudly embraces gawkiness, but her reallife style is far from it. Going high-end at this year’s NAACP Image awards, Rae shimmered in a spring ’18 Marc Jacobs dress with YSL stilettos. Prior to that, her custom Prabal Gurung slit gown revealed sleek Stuart Weitzman sandals at the Golden Globes. “There are many designers that we like to wear. I think it’s important as a stylist to work with big fashion houses as much as upcoming brands, [and] we are pretty balanced when it comes to that,” said Rembert. As he continues to tap into Rae’s glamorous side, he acknowledged the opportunity to shape the aesthetic of such a dynamic star. “To work with someone like Issa is a dream come true. She is a visionary and truly one of the few pushing culture forward,” he said.

YARA SHAHIDI The “Grown-ish” actress and her stylist, Jason Bolden, know how to win a red carpet. Yara Shahidi portrays a studious college girl on TV, but off-camera, it’s her impressive style moments most worth noting. “Things are typically easy and effortless,” said Bolden on working with the teenager. Shahidi’s SAG Awards style, a Ralph Lauren jumpsuit draped with a 6-foot train, set social media abuzz. That night, she graced the red carpet in Holly platform sandals by Jimmy Choo — a label she’s come to wear often. “Jimmy Choo and Prada are my go-to shoe designers for the carpet with Yara. We normally go with a simple style

THE NEW SCHOOL Young Hollywood’s next gen of talent continues to rise, and fashion remains at the forefront for these up-and-comers.

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET The “Call Me by Your Name” actor is already an Oscar nominee at age 22. The breakout star is a fan of Berluti, along with Calvin Klein, Thom Browne and Gucci. He makes a simple suit look exceptionally cool.

ROWAN BLANCHARD The Converse ambassador and “Girl Meets World” star is often seen in unexpected ensembles from Giambattista Valli Couture, Miu Miu and Chanel. Next up, the 16-year-old will appear in “A Wrinkle in Time.” NATALIA DYER The “Stranger Things” actress has been spotted at the SAG, Critics’ Choice and Emmy awards in romantic and feminine looks from Vera Wang, Dior and Erdem. She’s a fan of Jimmy Choo and Christian Louboutin shoes. COLE SPROUSE Child actor Cole Sprouse is making waves as one of the stars in The CW’s “Riverdale.” He’s also in Converse’s “Forever Young” campaign and is known for elevating classic looks by adding his own style twists. KIERSEY CLEMONS When the face of Coolway isn’t busy designing her own line of shoes for Musse & Cloud, she can be seen onscreen in TV shows and feature films such as “Angie Tribeca” and “Flatliners.”

with a pop of color,” explained Bolden. He describes Shahidi’s style as “cool, fresh and smart” but points out that fun is always in the mix. There’s no doubt that Shahidi’s star continues to rise — both onand offscreen. “The conversation about what she’ll wear for big carpets always starts with lots of laughs. The magic happens from there,” Bolden said.

SAOIRSE RONAN With three Oscar nods under her belt, Saoirse Ronan is surely becoming one of film’s greatest fashion forces. Most recently, the star, 23, made waves at the 2017

SAG Awards in a long-sleeved Louis Vuitton silk gown, which she paired with black velvet Christian Louboutin platforms. “I don’t swamp her with choices,” said stylist Elizabeth Saltzman. “We make sure whatever it is feels relevant to a mood or strength or an emotion. We try and keep it editorial, pushing it slightly.” The Irish actress has been on the circuit promoting the Oscar-nominated film “Lady Bird” wearing nonconforming looks by Versace, Gucci, Michael Kors and Calvin Klein, to name a few. “Saoirse represents young women. She’s extremely smart. She keeps it very real. I try to make

sure the clothes don’t wear her and she gets to own herself and [her] personality,” Saltzman said. As for shoes, the stylist added that comfort is key. “I want her to be confident on her feet. If it has height and stability, I’m in,” she said. Go-to styles are classics such as Louboutin, Giuseppe Zanotti, Jimmy Choo and Manolo Blahnik, along with more whimsical silhouettes from Charlotte Olympia, Sophia Webster and Laurence Dacade.

JOE KEERY Actor Joe Keery, aka Steve Harrington on the hit Netflix show “Stranger Things,” has found Hollywood fame quickly. Keery has put his headlinemaking hair on display while showing off a unique sense of male style — on the red carpet, in GQ spreads, during on-camera interviews and national commercials. Keery has stepped out in a vast range of not-so-basic looks — including a head-to-toe plaid suit by Musika Free at the “Stranger Things” season 2 premiere and a Valentino ensemble during the latest Men’s Fashion Week in Paris. He wore a John Varvatos velvet suit at the 2017 Emmy Awards, pairing it with sleek Jimmy Choo loafers. “Joe is an innately cool guy,” stylist Sonia Young said. “He belongs in a different era. He loves rolling up his jeans and showing his socks. He loves pinky rings and watches. He’s down to always try.” Keery’s career doesn’t end on the screen. He’s also in a rock band called Post Animal, where he plays the guitar — which may have something to do with his effortlessly cool style sensibility.

ANSEL ELGORT Ever since his breakout role in teen romance “The Fault in Our Stars,” Ansel Elgort has become a red carpet mainstay. While the actor, who starred in last summer’s hit film “Baby Driver,” is known to wear

sleek evening attire, he’s also a huge sneaker fan. Often seen courtside at a Knicks game in Nike kicks, Elgort has taken his love of sneakers to the next level: He teamed with Paul Andrew for a collab last year. “The decision to team up came about quite organically, actually,” the designer told Footwear News last May. “Ansel gave my introduction speech at the [2016] FN Achievement Awards, where I was honored as Designer of the Year. From that evening on, we kept in touch, bouncing ideas off one another. Ansel is a sneaker connoisseur and a true artist, so partnering with him on this has really been a dream.” Since then, Elgort continues to make his style mark on entertainment’s biggest stages. He wore headto-toe Prada to the 2018 Golden Globes and donned Givenchy at last year’s American Music Awards.

KIERNAN SHIPKA Young Sally Draper from “Mad Men” has officially grown into a budding fashion star. Actress Kiernan Shipka has a knack for owning unconventional ensembles. This month, she notably rocked a playful look at the 2018 Critics’ Choice Awards wearing a pink, green and yellow tulle design straight off Del Pozo’s spring ’18 runway. She paired the look with Miu Miu metallic platform shoes. “She grew up on ‘Mad Men,’ and her style has grown with her,” stylists Jill Lincoln and Jordan Johnson said. “She graduated far beyond the smocking dresses she started out in — to couture, in fact.” Off the carpet, Shipka’s stylists noted that she wears brands such as Madewell and the like. “Kiernan loves and understands the process and history of clothes far beyond that of most girls,” they added. Keep an eye out for more youthful and whimsical looks from the 18-year-old actress this year, as she takes on her biggest role yet: Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Shipka will be play the lead in the upcoming Netflix series based on Archie Comics’ Sabrina Spellman character.

With awards season in full swing, we tapped the hottest celebrity makeup artists and hairstylists to find out how the stars get ready for the red carpet By Mishal Cazmi

PATI DUBROFF

Celebrity clients Margot Robbie, Priyanka Chopra, Kate Bosworth Industry veteran Pati Dubroff has painted the faces of some of Hollywood’s biggest A-listers and has glammed up celebrities for the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair. Add to that a laundry list of beauty brands she’s worked with such as Dior and Laura Mercier and you’ve got one of the most sought-after and respected makeup artists around.

How do you prep celebrities before a red-carpet event? Prepping the skin is really important. I make sure it is well-hydrated. I always use sheet masks from 111Skin before a red-carpet event and then make sure that the areas where there shouldn’t be shine like the T-Zone are matte with primer, which also helps foundation stay and reduces the need for a lot of powders. I also make sure to layer products so the makeup holds up. I try to squeeze in an oxygen infusion treatment for clients – this really helps skin look amazing so that not as much foundation is needed.

THE STAR TREATMENT

Celebrity clients Claire Foy, Alison Brie, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson You can thank Quinn Murphy and his makeup expertise for giving Claire Foy – fresh off the second season of The Crown and sporting a pixie cut – as much of a royal air as her onscreen character. In recent months, the makeup artist has also perfected Reese Witherspoon’s rosy look and Alison Brie’s glowing visage for the red carpet.

Do you have any favourite skincare products? I always bring a variety of skincare because you don’t know what the person’s skin is going to be like. I’ve been using the Tatcha moisturizer because it doesn’t leave the skin too greasy and has a nice texture for makeup. I love face oils, so I’ll usually have two kinds for the face, one that’s richer for someone with very dry skin. One more thing I like to have is a body moisturizer or oil, then something shimmery. I’ll mix them together to give the body a beautiful, luminous sheen.

How do you prep for awards season? I make sure that my kit has everything I need and is clean and ready to go so I don’t have to scramble looking for products. I make sure that my favourite products are in there – I have blotting papers for the girls to put in their clutches, and empty containers to put lipstick in with a disposable lip brush. Those are the kinds of things that girls can use to do their own touch-ups for a long evening out.

have Flash Colors from Make Up For Ever. If somebody throws something at me, I can make any colour if I have all the primary colours in my kit. So that’s my insurance – I may not have every single shade of eyeshadow, but I know I can mix and make it. I always need false lashes.

QUINN MURPHY

What products do you give a client for touch-ups before they head out? The evening bags that my clients carry are ridiculously small. We stuff whatever we can inside, but always a lipstick, a powder puff with some powder wrapped in a tissue, and maybe a couple of cotton buds for cleaning the eye area. The face is key, but do you prep the body as well? It is absolutely important that the skin on the body looks as flawless as the skin on the face. I make sure that any skin that’s showing is well-moisturized and is as even in colour and tone as the face, so I often do a gentle amount of body makeup where needed. Do you take hair and clothing into account when creating a beauty look? The whole package needs to feel harmonious, so the makeup needs to complement the dress and the hair, as well as the jewels and the shoes. It’s all about teamwork and the overall look. The dress is what sets the tone, and then we work together to create the best looks to showcase the dress. But, of course, the most important piece is making sure the woman looks like the most flawless version of herself. Do you have any beauty rules when it comes to red-carpet makeup? Definitely no heavy contouring, strobing, Instagramstyle square brows or strip lashes. Basically no Instagram or YouTube-style makeup.

Makeup artist Quinn Murphy made Alison Brie red-carpet ready for the Golden Globes.

What are some of your makeup kit musthaves? I never go anywhere without my brushes. I also have a portable light called the Makeup Light. When I’m doing makeup in dark hotel rooms or at a house at nighttime and there’s no natural light, it’s really the only thing that I absolutely have to have. I also need a range of foundations because I usually don’t know who I’m going to work with. I always

What’s your secret to getting a flawless complexion? Apply makeup under really good lighting. You’d be surprised how lighting can affect the colours, your eyes and perception of colour. I always try to match the base to the body, like the décolleté area, so that there’s no discrepancy and it looks like one harmonious, beautiful skin tone. I also love applying makeup with a Beauty Blender. It gives a really even, sheer, translucent finish. I’ll wet it and then put a little bit of foundation on. I pat it on until I get the coverage that I want. What are some tricks to make sure makeup stays put? You want to use a very sheer and small amount of setting powder, even if it’s just in the T-zone, to set the makeup so that it has staying power. RACHEL GOODWIN

Celebrity clients Emma Stone, January Jones, Amal Clooney Rachel Goodwin has become a favourite for stars like Emma Stone and January Jones. In fact, the makeup artist and Nars director of pro artistry and red carpet has been a part of Emma’s glam squad since Emma was in her teens. Rachel’s makeup magic for the award-winning actress has made her beauty looks – including her Golden Globe look, inspired by the colours of the suffragist movement – as memorable as her dresses. What’s in your kit during awards season? Things for prepping skin like sheet masks, foot masks and eye masks, because there are a lot of parties and late nights. I will usually have extra Nars creamy concealers, which I hand out constantly for people to do touch-ups. Clutches are tiny, so I have to find little eye drops, mini beauty blender sponges, tissues, powders and things like that. On award days, waterproof mascaras are 100 per cent happening. If you win, you’re probably going to be very emotional, right? But if you’re watching other speeches, you’re most likely to be emotional as well. What are some items you give clients before a big event? I love oil blotting papers because they are so effective, don’t disturb the rest of the makeup 76 HELLOMAGAZINE.CA

hair down. The bonding ingredients also help keep hair looking healthy, which is important for red-carpet photos. I like the Dyson dryer and Amika hot tools. Amika’s styling tool has a bunch of different attachments in one handle – it’s great for travelling light with everything in one box. All you have to do is change the size of the barrel if you want smaller or larger curls.

and absorb oil. They’re great because clients can handle it themselves. I usually give them the whole lipstick because I’m not good at creating little containers. And as a woman, I think it’s nice to pull a beautiful lipstick out of your bag. You posted an Instagram photo of Emma Stone wearing a lip mask and it went viral. Do you use masks before an award show? I’m a mask connoisseur. It is an awesome way to prep skin for makeup because a sheet mask is typically made with hyaluronic acid, which plumps up the skin and gives it a really lush and glowy effect, but doesn’t feel greasy.

Renato Campora is the mane man behind Jessica Chastain’s picture-perfect hair. He has created everything from glamorous Old Hollywood waves to soft, tousled tresses. Recently, he transformed Mila Kunis’s signature long locks into an ultra-chic bob. What can we find in your kit when awards season rolls around? I keep a comb, brushes, curling iron, flat iron and blow-dryer in my kit. I also always have my box with hair pins, bobby pins and rubber bands on standby. What are some of your favourite styling tools and products? Schwarzkopf Professional’s Crystal Gel is my go-to for blow-outs. It helps keep the hair very straight and shiny. It tames the baby hairs and fly-aways and creates a very polished look. The Multi-Purpose Styling Balm helps prime and protect the hair. I use a couple of pumps on wet hair before blow-drying and it also helps to protect hair from heat damage. I like to use it on the mid length of the hair and the ends. I strongly recommend the Blondme Keratin Restore Bonding Shampoo & Conditioner to my clients. It leaves the hair very soft and makes it easier to blow-dry the hair. It creates movement and doesn’t weigh the

Do you have any red-carpet fears? I take precautions if I’m doing a deep lip or a bright lip. I’ll often make sure to do the old finger trick to ensure there’s nothing on the inside on their teeth. And I typically gravitate toward more matte formulas. I don’t use gloss on the red carpet because it’s very easy to smear. What are you most excited about this awards season? Right now, there’s so much conversation around women and what it means to feel empowered as a woman. I think the award shows will reflect that. For me, creating beauty for women who are doing great things in the world and getting to be a part of that is exciting, because beauty is more than just makeup. I’m lucky enough to work with really strong women with big voices, and helping them feel amazing on such a big day is what I’m excited about.

Kit Makeup s Essential

Do you have tips to ensure that a hairstyle stays in place during a long evening? I rely on a stronghold hairspray to keep the hair in place. You just need a small spritz of it sideways. Once I spray, I brush the hair again to make sure it holds but isn’t too stiff-looking.

Do you have a go-to style that you like to create or that celebrities are requesting? Most of the time when we do big premières or events, the clients like the hair to be smooth with shine. The goal is to look put-together and chic, while also keeping that New Hollywood soft look. I prefer the hair to look styled and not undone, while maintaining fullness and volume.

BRIDGET BRAGER

Celebrity clients Kristen Stewart, Diane Kruger, Kate Bosworth, Sarah Paulson

How important is the makeup look and outfit when creating a hairstyle? The look can change at any moment, so it’s important to adapt to the particular event and work as a team, whether it’s a première or the Oscars. If it’s going to be an easy press day, I love a simple blow-out. If it’s an elegant event, I like to create waves and drama so the client stands out.

Not every hairstylist will shave a starlet’s head mere hours before a red-carpet appearance, but that’s exactly what Bridget Brager did for Kristen Stewart last year. When she’s not taking risks with Kristen, the stylist is busy coiffing countless other celebrities such as Diane Kruger and Jenna Dewan Tatum, who was one of her first clients. Kristen Stewart (here) and Diane Kruger (below) are two of Bridget Brager’s many celebrity clients.

What can we find in your kit during awards season? My kit is always changing. I’m a huge product junkie. But there are a few staples I must have. I can’t live without mousse. It knocks out frizz and provides strong hold and a satin finish. It’s my foundation for any hairstyle – from beach waves to Hollywood waves. Second is a leave-in oil. It penetrates the hair shaft, so your hair never looks greasy, adds tons of shine and protects your strands from hot tools. Lastly, the T3 Whirl Trio is so smart. One base and three interchangeable barrel heads. It’s perfect for any hairstyle. What are some of your favourite products for a red-carpet look? Red-carpet season calls for an updo every now and then, and I love using hairpins to secure my styles. Hooked elastic bands are very important for a tight ponytail or base for a bun. You hook the band under your pony then wrap it tightly around until you can’t anymore. Then connect the hooks. Your ponytail stays and doesn’t sag. No one wants to see a saggy ponytail! And it gives an instant facelift. A rattail comb is essential for a straight part for a dramatic look. Dry shampoo is a huge necessity because often clients don’t want to wash their hair every day, which is the way it should be. But we do need something to refresh and give the hair a boost of volume.

Renato Campora created defined waves on Jessica Chastain for the Golden Globes.

What are some of your tricks to ensure a hairstyle stays in place? For a woman with frizzy hair, the prep work actually starts in the shower. A moisturizing shampoo and conditioner are key. After my clients wash their hair, I like to dry it with paper towels or a T-shirt. This is a great trick for making sure the hair cuticles stay down. Vigorous drying with a rough towel messes with the cuticles, and once they’re up, it’s hard to get them back down. The better they stay down the more the hair looks sleek and shiny. When securing an updo, spray hairspray or a texture spray onto your hairpins. This ensures the pins won’t slip out midway down the red carpet. — TARA MACINNIS HELLO! 77

Words: Sarah Joan Ross Photos: Supplied, NPW London

WHY IS KIM KARDASHIAN WEST SPORTING BLUE HAIR? Well, her hairdresser, Chris

Appleton, who made the ice-queen transformation, replied: “Why not? Icy blonde is the new platinum!” Kim had been seen with Khaleesi-style hair since last year, saying on her app, “The last time I went platinum a few years back, I did it in one sitting and never gave it the proper time. So this time I sat there for 12 hours straight. Then we did another five-hour session. In the end… SO worth it.” This new icy-blue shade is not too much of a transformation, however. Chris says, “The great thing about platinum blondes is that you can switch it up with coloured shampoo and mousse without the commitment. I use the Colour Wow Brass Banned Correct and Perfect Mousse for a quick hue change on Kim. Just make sure you adjust your make-up to suit the blue, and use a great conditioner to keep locks in check. Olaplex #3 for ten minutes as often as possible is key to keeping it in great condition.” Kim KW is not alone. Dubai influencer Tala Samman has been rocking the shade for a while. Tala tells Grazia, “I’m someone that gets bored easily – I did have ombré for over a year, and then went for lavender ends which eventually built up into purple hair. One year ago, I thought about going for a navy shade. I discussed it with my colourist, Simona at SLaM salon – she understands colour inside out – so every time I top it up, we play around with the colour a little bit to find an interesting, lived-in shade. We’ve had a deep blue, a washed out pastel hue, to something a little more electric. She uses the Pravana shades that are brilliantly vibrant and last.”
