EXCITEMENT BREWS FOR THE UPPER CLUTHA A&P SHOW

Wow! It is less than two weeks to go before the Upper Clutha A&P Show opens its doors. It is always a wonderful event packed with education, entertainment and shopping, and we just hope our fabulous Wanaka weather continues throughout the Show period. However, I think while many of us feel very blessed to be at this end of the country, basking in the amazing weather we are having, there are many of us who are feeling very sorry for those who have been so devastatingly affected by Cyclone Gabrielle. Many of us are left wondering just how we can help those who have lost so much.

The Upper Clutha A&P Society’s Board have agreed to donate $1 from every adult ticket sold to this

year’s Show and $1 from every Livestock entry. These funds will be donated to those farming communities worst hit in this recent disaster for feed, medicines, and anything else deemed urgently needed.

"The nice things about this is that everyone who enters a Livestock competition or buys an adult ticket will be contributing to this relief fund" says Brenda King, the A&P Society’s Board Chair. "It feels a very fitting way for us to show our support to our fellow rural communities in this time of real need".

We promise a great Show! We encourage you all to buy your tickets online, and to look at the schedule on our website. Remember no ATM’s in the grounds, Eftpos only at the gate and please leave your dogs at home.

Summer might be winding down, but the demand for our services hasn’t cooled yet. Here’s a selection of the work we’ve seen.

Our trend of shoplifting hasn’t abated just yet and over the past 2 weeks we’ve arrested 4 further offenders on a raft of charges. There are a couple more to apprehend, but don’t worry, we’ll find time. We have been working successfully alongside some of Wanaka’s big retailers to crack down on this behaviour and we know it will make a difference going forward. We’re looking forward to a drop in theft from our stores as these offenders find themselves no longer welcome in Wanaka’s stores.

Thanks to community information last week, Police are cracking down on antisocial and dangerous driving, especially burnouts which have been reported across the wider Hawea area. With this information, Police are rounding up vehicles for impound. If anyone has footage of such behaviour, we encourage people to share it with Police.

There have been a handful of thefts of tools from vehicles parked on the street and from construction sites. Simultaneously there have been a quantity of tools located during search warrants in Central Otago. Sadly, these thefts and property don’t match up, but it’s a good example of the value of engraving serial numbers on your valuable tools and recording them. Police frequently find stolen property but have great difficulty finding owners.

Now you’d choke on your cornflakes if you saw how many crashes we’ve had on our roads over the past 2 weeks. I won’t bore you with the list, but we’ll share a couple. Oh, to be a tow

An intoxicated driver crashed into two parked cars on Anderson Road before continuing on with three wheels, right in front of alarmed onlookers. Thankfully he’s off the road for some time. There was a lucky escape up Cardrona Ski field access road when a car lost control and found itself upside down off the side of the road. Finally, there was an intersection related crash in Hawea involving a young man who was a disqualified driver. He’ll also have to explain why the plates on his vehicle don’t belong to his

Pleased to say, although out of pure luck, there were no serious injuries but some highly visible results for the community. Just to keep things light hearted, I need to share a tale of Senior Constable Kerin’s trip to Caltex at 11.30pm on Friday night. Now eagle eye readers would notice that Caltex isn’t open at 11.30pm and you’re right. He was investigating an insecure premises with an alarm going off. Diligently searching the building to catch the would-be offender he succeeded both in finding no offender, but also setting off the fog cannon. Like a scene from Star Wars, smoke descended from the ceiling. But it wasn’t Darth Vader appearing from the smoke, but a lightly toasted Senior Constable Kerin, looking for air. Tomas Hurnik – Baroque Cello

Concert to raise funds for string instrument ensemble

The Baroque Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand is on a mission to build a collection of period instruments for students. Tomas Hurnik, a foremost cellist from Europe, now based in Christchurch, will be performing a Solo Baroque Cello Concert Tour featuring Bach and other baroque gems on a tour of the South Island including Wanaka. The profits from the concerts will go directly to raise funds for 14 string instruments to create a small string chamber ensemble.

For 5 years, the Baroque Community and Educational Trust of New Zealand has cooperated with the University of Canterbury with educating, training and providing performance opportunities for young talented NZ musicians. The aim of this project is to deepen this educational experience by allowing the students to rehearse and perform on period instruments so that they can more authentically explore the roots of western music.

So come and enjoy a beautiful concert and at the same time support young talented New Zealand musicians!

Through our ongoing activities and scheduled workshops, we aim to show you – locals and visitors alike – how land, water, flora, fauna, climate and humans are all connected.

There are many talented, passionate people within our community who contribute their knowledge and skills to ensure the success of communityled action. Our Place is an opportunity for local groups to connect to share knowledge and resources with our community and beyond.

The CReW autumn kindling fundraiser

Kindling that will warm your heart as well as your toes.

Cat Rescue Wanaka welcomes Autumn and are excited to be kicking off their first fundraiser for the year, The CReW Autumn Kindling Fundraiser!

The CRW volunteers (aka “the CReW”) are passionate about the kindling for two reasons: one - it is an environmental resource which would otherwise be wasted (and they hate waste!); and two - it generates much needed funds, with veterinary related bills in the order of $2,000/month.

The CReW have been out harvesting slash from felled trees and sorting and splitting it into

banana boxes so it’s ready to go. Boxes weigh a minimum 6kg. They cost $10/box or buy five get one free.

The Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade would like to extend our deepest sympathies with the Muriwai Brigade and the families of the two volunteer firefighters who tragically lost their lives during Cyclone Gabrielle. It’s a poignant reminder of everything our volunteer first responders do across the country to keep our communities safe.

With that, January was a very busy month for the brigade, we attended 20 calls and had some very busy weeks. Thankfully we’ve not yet had any large vegetation fires, so thank you to everyone in the community who’s helped us by not taking any risks during this incredibly dry summer. We appreciate it, but summer isn’t over yet. Stay vigilant!
