EASTER WEEKEND Sat 20 & Sun 21 April 2019

Written by: Annabel Roy

What started as an idea between vintage vehicle collectors has now evolved into one of the country’s biggest automotive shows, set to roll into Wanaka in less than a month. Peter McDougall, a member of the West Otago Vintage Club said an event was first discussed a few years ago as a way to celebrate the club’s 60th anniversary this year. The club approached Wanaka businessman Allan Dippie for support, who had both the space at Three Parks development and a sizeable collection of vintage tractors of his own. Robert Duncan, director of Warbirds and Wheels museum also came on board; the event being the perfect opportunity to display his collection of American vintage cars and vehicles.

AUCTION

Along with other key founding members, Wheels at Wanaka has evolved from a ‘box of beers in a paddock’ afternoon into a family friendly event expected to

attract over 1,000 vintage vehicles and 15,000 visitors across two days. There will be activities for all the family including Highlands parade ground, Gough CAT earthmoving and 4WD demonstrations, live entertainment, an onsite trade market, yummy food and local brewery offerings.

The ‘Shakedown in the Shed’ Saturday night celebration is a free event for all who register a vehicle; registrations can be made on the day or online at www. wheelsatwanaka.co.nz. Event tickets can also be purchased online. The Easter weekend event on 20-21 April will be held on alternate years to Warbirds over Wanaka. Wheels at Wanaka is a charitable trust with surplus funds going to West Otago Vintage Club and the Wanaka Coast Guard. Thank You

The Upper Clutha A&P Society thanks all our volunteers, committees, competitors, sponsors, trade exhibitors, contractors and the many others who contributed to another successful Wanaka A&P Show. The deluge the day before opening day tested everyone’s resolve and determination, and a special thanks goes to all those who stepped up to ensure the Show still went on. Thank you also to the entire Upper Clutha community for embracing the Show’s theme this year, our “Call Me Local” campaign. What started as a tongue-in-cheek idea quickly gained tremendous local support and assured the success of this wonderful community event, by the community, for the community. We look forward to seeing you all next year, 13 -14 March, 2020.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Riparian planting to protect our waterways Written by: The Te Kākano team Last year, Te Kākano partnered with the Upper Clutha Lakes Trust to lead and commence Riparian planting for the Wanaka Water project, funded under the Ministry for the Environment’s Freshwater Improvement Fund. This means Te Kākano will be planting 24,000 plants over the five year life of this project. The project runs alongside Te Kākano’s other community plantings which remain our core focus. We continue to follow our philosophy of using plants eco-sourced from within this region to ensure everything we do supports the traditional biodiversity

of the region. Local nurseries, Matukituki Natives and Pukerau are providing plants where we cannot meet the demand.

and are assisting identify potential sites, and QLDC is also helping identify areas for mitigating urban runoff impacts.

We have developed site selection criteria to determine the suitability of potential locations against the prime objective of water quality improvement, and an MOU between parties for selected sites.

Te Kākano staff and volunteers have been busy propagating plants of suitable species and organising the planting and initial maintenance of plants. This work will be ongoing and where the numbers are beyond the Trust’s scope we will contract out plantings.

Such sites include those administered by our traditional partners QLDC and DOC, and on private land some stream sides and wetlands that feed into the rivers or lakes. Aspiring Environmental have been developing Land Environment Plans with farmers around the lakes

We believe that delivering the Wanaka Water Project alongside our other community projects helps us further enhance our ability to improve the biodiversity of the area through connecting people with the land.

SPCA annual appeal Written by: Judy Young The Otago Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Incorporated (SPCA Otago) has been the voice of animal welfare since 1882. Together with our generous supporters we continue to work hard to improve the lives of animals in the Otago region. We encourage the humane treatment of all animals and prevent cruelty being inflicted upon them. We do everything we can to ensure Otago’s animals are well cared for and want everyone in our area to know how to look after their animals and give them the love and respect they deserve. On Friday 5 April volunteers will be out at New World, Paper Plus and the post office collecting for the annual SPCA Appeal. Tickets for the Deluxe Hamper Raffle will be on sale at each site – $2 a ticket. The Annual SPCA Dog Walk will take place on Saturday 6 April. Meet at 10.15am on the lakefront opposite Lake

Bar for a nice relaxing walk along the lakefront with your pup. Participation requires a donation of $2 per person and tickets for the Deluxe Hamper Raffle will also be on sale. Come and socialise your dog and support a good cause! All welcome. For further information, contact Judy Young on 03 443 816.

SPCA also have an Op Shop which is situated in Alexandra opposite the Warehouse. Donations or items and clothing can be left with Judy 03 443 8161. Thank you to New World, Paper Plus, Wanaka Post Shop, VetEnt, Vetlife and the Messenger for your continued support.

Calling all volunteers for the Contact Epic race Written by: Emma Burlinson Lake Hawea is hosting ‘NZ’s Ultimate Mountain Bike Challenge’ – the Contact Epic race – and they want to give Hawea Playgroup in Hawea Flat a whopping $1,000 to help them with volunteers to marshal at the event! Now, our Mums are busy ladies so we’re not asking them to give us time they don’t have and so we are appealing to the wider community for help! It’s a great opportunity for those sporty people in our

community that are interested in taking part in the race but don’t feel quite ready this year and would like to experience the event in the flesh. Do you know anyone that loves this kind of thing, who is mountain bike crazy, or just enjoys volunteering or events? Ask them to get in touch! Fancy a change of scenery? Fun and social, we can buddy you up with someone or bring a friend. Race day is 13 April – shifts are mainly in the morning, a few start later and are typically 2–3 hours with a bit of down time between the riders. Most stations will have

two playgroup volunteers on together so there will be plenty of time to hang out and chat! Hawea Playgroup is reliant on fundraising to help keep running. As well as the Epic, we have bake sales and other fundraisers which our Mums will be more able to help with, but any help from our supportive community is valued. If you’re interested in helping out or would like some more information, please email us at haweaplaygroup@gmail.com or contact Emma on 0211 311 480.

CRIME LINE

WANAKA

// by Senior Constable Ian HENDERSON

An amnesty exists for the surrender of certain MSSA (semi-automatic) firearms at the moment. There is an online form you can fill out to arrange the hand-over of these weapons at forms.police.govt.nz/forms/firearmshand-in , or you can contact your local Police Station to arrange to hand these weapons in at a convenient time. On Thursday the 28th, Police attended a two-vehicle crash on SH 6 at Albert Town. One driver was processed for drink-driving and had his car impounded. Police also received a theft complaint where a Haro BMX bike with a black frame was taken from Mt Aspiring College on the Wednesday afternoon. This bike was later located dumped in town near the library, thankfully undamaged. On Friday Police received a complaint relating to a .22 calibre bullet hole found in a garage near the Wanaka Golf Course from the previous night. This was not related to the rabbit-shoot the three previous evenings where 240 rabbits were shot using a shotgun by a registered pest exterminator. On Saturday Police were advised of a vehicle off the road near the Cardrona River south of the Cardrona Village. Enquiries are being made with the owner as to how it got there. On Sunday the 31st, a black/red Seaview Wake jet ski and trailer (Y657E) was reported stolen from Lakeview Terrace, Lake Hawea. Anyone knowing their whereabouts is asked to contact the Wanaka Police. Local licensed premises are reminded that S.237 of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 requires them to promote alcohol responsibly - discounts on alcohol is allowed up to the maximum of 25% only. Breaches could result in suspension, and/or a fine up to $10,000. He wiki haumaru
