Located at 2 Heron Green in Albert Town, is the Riverside Park Community Facility. Come along to the Open Day on Saturday 7 November from 11.00am - 4.00pm.

There will be free Yoga classes, with an introduction to the gym, and tours of the facility’s pools, hot tub, clubhouse, and grounds. There will also be a bouncy castle for the kids and a sausage sizzle, so bring your togs and make a day of it with the family.

Riverside Park Community Facility was originally built by Infinity Investment Group, who recently transferred the property to a not-for-profit Incorporated Society. A volunteer board of members was appointed and they are committed to preserving this great community asset in perpetuity, for the benefit of all members.

So come along and check out this fantastic local venue, where you can socialise and relax with your family and friends, or workout in a private, well equipped gym. During the summer months, enjoy the pools and spacious grassy lawns. Take a soak in the hot tub under the stars, and take part in the classes all year round. Members can book the clubhouse for private functions for free. Community groups are also invited to utilise the clubhouse.

Membership has recently opened up to the wider Wanaka and Hawea communities. The annual membership of only $45 per month, per household is available, with a 15% discount for Gold Card holders.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wastebusters is celebrating 20 years! on 20 November and a day of cake and celebrations in Wanaka on 27 November.

Wastebusters is a social enterprise, which delivers reduction, reuse and recycling services funded through its own business operations.

Since we officially started working towards zero waste in 2000, with three staff, Wastebusters has gone from strength to strength thanks to the contributions of hundreds of people, a clear vision and supportive community.

It’s been twenty years since a group of Wanaka locals got together to start a community recycling centre called Wastebusters. It’s time to celebrate!

Throughout November we’ll be sharing stories from our twenty years, and offering ways for the community to celebrate with us; such as site tours and free beeswax wrap sessions at both sites, a drop-in celebration in Alexandra

The organisation now employs over 50 full and part-time staff over our two sites in Wanaka and Alexandra. 763 businesses recycle with us.

Last year we sent 2,280 tonnes of material off to be recycled into something new, and around 135,000 customers took home something from our reuse shops.

Relay For Life Wanaka is returning for a second time and is set for the weekend of 27 & 28 March 2021 at beautiful Pembroke Park. We’re delighted to have Wanaka Mitre 10 on board again as our Major Event Partner and look forward to working with the team – and walking with them at the event!

Relay For Life (RFL) is a team event where participants fundraise and walk or run relaystyle for 24 hours to remember, celebrate and fight back against cancer. The event has a festival atmosphere with continuous entertainment and each team has a campsite around the track. All funds raised will support the vital work of the Cancer Society Otago Southland Division.

St John Wanaka has been fortunate to receive 1 of 11 new vehicles in South Island recently – and although we hope you never need to use the vehicle, you may see it out and about on the roads of Wanaka!

As many of us suddenly realise that we are in the eleventh month, the elections are behind us, Mitre10 Mega is soon to open, the All Blacks and Silver Ferns have had series wins, and Christmas is looming, life in Wanaka is relatively normal compared to the rest of the world.

Local Police have been busy in prevention mode: no drink drivers to mention and the pubs continue to be well run. Well done team.

This week we dealt with a youth-restricted driver who took dad’s car to Queenstown with two mates, but didn’t tell dad! A disqualified driver located on Eely Point Road, who had his vehicle impounded. An incident involving a parents driving at the Hawea Flat School at pick up time.

On Sunday we also dealt with a 10 year old who had a crash whilst riding a motor bike on a road in Hawea.

Thankfully only minor cuts and bruising resulted. Later that day another motorbike rider came off his bike on the Crown range, causing damage to his bike, but he was unhurt.

A considerable amount of our time is being spent dealing with domestic matters, so our advice is to get help before things get out of hand.

The 40km/hr speed restrictions have been quite a talking point around town but they are here to stay, so give yourself a little more time for those short trips around town.

Our local Search and Rescue team helped out with an injured mountain biker in Sticky forest on the weekend. They extracted him from the scene and carried him to the landing zone were the helicopter took him away. Many thanks to all involved.

The back-country is looking likely to have more local trampers and walkers, so remember when you go into the mountains - be well prepared, let someone know where you are going and how long you will expect to be exploring, and take two forms of communication (cellphone and a locator beacon).
