Wanaka Arts sponsors local artists London Art Biennale

Wanaka Arts, formerly Wanaka Arts Society, is proudly sponsoring two local members in their entry to the London Art Biennale this year. Youth member, Max Hall with his entry ‘So Much Monet’ and Jane Kellahan’s entry ‘Beefore the End’ were selected to be exhibited in this prestigious event from entries around the world.

One of Wanaka Arts goals is to support local artists in our community to reach their potential. Both Max and Jane needed financial assistance to get their entries safely shipped to the UK for the event, so the Wanaka Arts committee decided that they would sponsor both artists.

Max’s response to Wanaka Arts sponsorship…“Thank you so much for this sponsorship. I am very, very grateful for the Wanaka Arts generosity!” Max is a past winner of the Youth prize for Wanaka Arts annual exhibition. Jane’s reaction to the sponsorship; “I’m very

appreciative of Wanaka Arts and their support of me and my work. It means so much.”

Jane is also a winner of a Wanaka Arts award at the last Labour Weekend exhibition. This isn’t Jane’s first London Art Biennale though. She entered in 2015 and received a ‘Special Mention of Excellence’ and with her recent entry Jane is looking to raise awareness of the plight of bees globally. “I want to get people thinking deeper and harder about the consequences of their actions.” Jane quotes Albert Einstein, “If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would have only four years to live”.

The London Art Biennale features 120 artists selected from 40 nations and runs from 23–26 May 2019 in Chelsea. At the time of press, no judges announcements had been received by either artist.

Something to call our own? Found only in Otago on lichen covered rocks and schist outcrops where their distinctive black, yellow and green spots provide exceptional camouflage. Yes, it’s the Otago Skink whose dramatically reduced habitat has resulted in a Doc classification of ‘Nationally Critical’.

The local Forest and Bird Branch has long been involved in protecting native birds in the Mt Aspiring National Park by trapping their predators. We would like to expand our effort to the protection of the endangered skinks. We have invited an expert in the field, Dr. Grant Norbury, to speak at our AGM on ‘Conserving New Zealand’s lizards in Modified and Unmodified Landscapes.’

We are hoping to stimulate interest in this local relic of a bygone era, so that those who follow will have a window into a time when plants and animals lived and thrived in an environment undisturbed by humankind.

At the same meeting, we expect to be confirming a remit that we will present at our national AGM in Wellington at the end of June. This remit challenges Forest and Bird at all levels to take active steps towards carbon neutrality. Climate change is already adversely affecting native plants and animals. We need to use every means at our disposal to halt the change.

Our meeting is at St John Rooms, Link Street, Wanaka on Wednesday 19th June at 7.00pm. All are welcome, a gold coin donation is appreciated.

Research shows that working with likeminded peers greatly increases their wellbeing and chances of success.

Gifted children respond and perceive the world through a different lense. The degree of sensitivity, intensity and awareness sets them apart. You can’t make your child gifted or stop them from being gifted.

Giftedness is innate, it is born and defines potential, but requires unique motivations and learning environments for it to develop into talent. We need to understand giftedness if we are to produce happy, well rounded children.

On Thursday, June 20 at 7.00pm at the Wanaka Primary School staff member, Danielle Nicholson, will be holding a community meeting regarding the characteristics and traits of gifted children. All are welcome to come along.

A new weekly ‘Game Day’ is all about having fun playing board games with friends and family, as well as a chance to meet and challenge someone new.

“The library is a community space where people can connect, learn and socialise. Game Day incorporates all of these things and we’re confident it will be a hit with both locals and visitors,� says Eve.

Games provided by the library include favourites like Scrabble, Chess, Backgammon, Connect 4 and Jenga.

People can bring their own games along as long as they’re happy to share.

It has been a very busy time for the crew at Ballantyne Road this week. I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the influx of people coming for the snow season, but there’s been a fair bit of carnage around the place.

Monday saw us helping a fellow from over Queenstown way who wasn’t in the greatest of headspaces. He came to Police seeking some help and we were able to put him in touch with the proper services to assist him. There was also a crash on the Crown Range – a timely reminder to adjust your driving for the season, and please aim your vehicle in the middle of your lane. Roads aren’t designed to have you drive half your car on the gravel to the left. Some drugs were found at a routine traffic stop and a dealer was taken off the streets. Just don’t do drugs. Some miscreant also stole a bike from out the back of Big Fig. A heinous act if you ask me so if you did commit this crime and read my ramblings, please put it back where you stole it from.

Tuesday delivered us a drink driver. No doubt they were only one of many that were out that night, as the previous weeks have given us cause to believe that people still aren’t getting the message about drink driving.

If you want to run the gamut and risk the consequences of your poor decision, please just reconsider and plan your nights accordingly. It isn’t difficult. Another crash on the Crown Range also that could have been avoided had the driver been able to stay in their lane.

Wednesday another drink driver. As above basically, it’s saddening to have to repeat myself. A group of youths decided the early hours of the morning would be a good time to grab some drinks and chips. Instead of opting for the open for business Night n Day, they decided to bust open the Subway cart, which constitutes a burglary. This is a serious offence and thanks to CCTV we know who they are. I strongly encourage them to front up at the station with their parents before we come knocking. Extremely disappointing that some of the youth of this town treat it in such a way.

Thursday, you guessed it, another drink driver. This under 20 year old learns their lesson early so fingers crossed it sticks with them. The lake level rose with all the rain and a yacht took off on its own from near Edgewater. If you leave them there, at least tie them up please so we don’t get tied up making sure nobody is passed out on them in the middle of the lake. The evening saw us dealing with a domestic incident.

On Friday a young lad has probably been watching too much Fast and Furious and decided he’d have a crack at doing some skids. Bad idea for him and some public service might be coming his way. A vehicle was also deliberately damaged overnight. The night saw quite a bit of disorder in town. A few bars had events on and the observed level of intoxication was disappointing.

Saturday was a bit quieter. A male was warned for breaching his bail and a domestic incident was attended.
