Organisers of the Wanaka A&P Show are gearing up to host more than 40,000 people this weekend for the annual event, which has been the highlight of the Upper Clutha calendar for more than 80 years. But as the crowds from around Otago – and New Zealand – arrive in Wanaka, it begs the question: what makes a local? Wanaka Show event manager Jane Stalker says they have addressed the issue in a tongue-in-cheek way via the Show’s Call Me Local marketing campaign. “The show has been a local institution since 1933 and over the years we’ve seen our region evolve into the wonderful community it is today,” she says. “This year, we wanted to celebrate being a local – whatever that means to you.”

At a time of rapid growth and development, Jane says maintaining a sense of community is now more
important than ever. The Wanaka A&P Show has long held traditional community values and the aim of the campaign is to remind people about the importance of these. “We believe it’s about what you do here and your role in the community, rather than how long you have lived here,” she says. The Wanaka A&P Show runs from this Friday 8 March to Saturday 9 March from 8.00am until 5.00pm at the Wanaka Showgrounds on Ardmore Street. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online at www.wanakashow. co.nz for $17.50 per day per adult and $5 per day per youth. Kids aged 12 and under are free.
