Taking on a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run is daunting in itself, but without the supporters on the sidelines and the teams of volunteers who are there marshalling, handing out food at aid stations and supporting athletes in recovery it would be impossible. Being a volunteer is both rewarding and motivating. You can: • • • •

Challenge Wanaka is a non-profit organisation run by a volunteer board of trustees. The Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust’s purpose is to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, play an instrumental part in growing the sport of triathlon in New Zealand and to deliver an event to the benefit of the local community, both socially and economically. None of this would be achievable without
the mammoth effort from every one of our 600 volunteers. About 350 amazing people have signed up already but we need another 250! So, if you’d like to help out, we’d love to hear from you, whether you’ve got a spare hour or a spare day, either on race day or in the lead up! All time you are able to give is hugely appreciated. After the event you can celebrate your achievements at the Goodstays Volunteer Crew Party on Sunday 18 February and hear from the leading pro athletes about their race and the difference you made to their day. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Rotary Wanaka and MAC join forces with great success! The Rotary Christmas & New Year Book Sale was superbly managed by the Mt Aspiring College Team, who later in the year are travelling to Spain. Rotary Wanaka would like to pass on a huge thank you to all involved who helped support this fundraiser! A team of 30 Mt Aspiring students, accompanied by 3 teachers, will wing their way to Spain on an educational trip this September. The students hope to improve their Spanish and experience the different cultural aspects of life there. The itinerary includes a visit to the Barcelona Festival La Merce, Monserrat, the Benedictine monastery close to Barcelona, a visit to San Sebastian, Pamplona, Sevilla, Formentera and Mallorca, two islands in the Balearic Archipelago in the Mediterranean. Rotary Wanaka were only too happy to support these hardworking MAC students and on Tuesday 30 January handed over a

Another challenging week has gone by in Wanaka - some crazy weather including a well-received 90mm of rain, and some interesting incidents attended by local Police. The week started out on a sad note on the 29th with a death on the lake shore opposite the skate park, and a serious injury to a paraglider pilot on Treble Cone. On the 30th, Search and Rescue were involved in the extraction of a 26yr old female from Scottâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Rock Bivouac, after she suffered snow blindness. Also that day Police received a complaint of a vehicle being stolen from a party near Luggate. It was later recovered in Stone St, Wanaka, and property had been stolen from the vehicle. Enquiries are continuing to locate the culprit(s). Another identical complaint was made to Police more recently.
