Over the course of a week, the hills and streets of Wānaka will be alive with the sound of music, laughter and riotous applause as the Wānaka Festival of Colour returns.
Many of the Festival artists will be running workshops and putting on special performances for the local schools, offering Upper Clutha students the opportunity to engage up close with world-class performers. The Royal New Zealand Ballet will be back in Wānaka for the festival week, running school and community workshops, allowing local dancers to learn from Aotearoa’s finest. For musicians, Australian multiinstrumentalist, composer and producer, Adam Page, will perform and run workshops with Mt Aspiring College students. Adam has been known to compose songs comprised of beat-boxing accompanied by sounds created by his own beard [you read that correctly!] while also being an extremely talented vocalist, saxophonist and

percussionist to name just a few of his skills. All this to say that the students of the region are in for a treat!
A highlight of the festival is the Wānaka New World Community Day with a series of free events, performances and installations in and around the Wānaka CBD. Local dance troupes, United Dance Crew and Pointe Central, will showcase their new dance and music performances; The Biggest Little Circus will astound with their highly skilled juggling and aerial acrobatics, while Wasabi, Queenstown’s Japanese Community Choir, will be performing on this side of the hill. These are just a few of the performances that will be brightening up the streets of Wānaka on Saturday, 1 April.
The Wānaka Festival of Colour 2023 runs from 26 March – 2 April. Tickets and programme available online: www.festivalofcolour.co.nz

Aloha Wanakians, hope everyone has been well. If you were blessed with a long weekend, I trust it was enjoyable. If you are like us and public holidays don’t grace you with their presence, then I hope you still found enjoyment, nonetheless. A bit of variety on show this past week which shall be divulged forthwith.
On Tuesday various enquiries into prolific shoplifting and graffiti were made in the hopes of identifying the scoundrels responsible. An individual was arrested for a rather serious matter.
On Wednesday another arrest was made. A locator beacon required our attention but proved to be a false alarm. A driving complaint was dealt with and some work was done around schools during pickup and drop-off for restricted drivers and cycle safety. There have been instances reported as well where drivers are parking in disabled spaces unlawfully as well as across broken yellow lines. I know it can be a stressful time but please adhere to parking accordingly. The evening gave us a drunken man running on the road after his friend was picked up for drink driving and another driving charge.
Thursday saw some more work done around the schools with the above mentioned. A driving complaint was attended to.
On Friday an individual’s driver licence was taken from them due to having more than 100 demerit points. They’ll get it back after 3 months. More enquiries for those prolific shoplifters I mentioned earlier and lots of general patrolling around the place. The evening passed without incident, which would have been a nice reprieve. There was a driving complaint dealt with on Saturday and those shoplifters were arrested. They now must explain themselves to a Judge. In the evening there was a vehicle crash. I think the drunk driver had something to do with it. Another drink driver was found and their level was so high that they automatically lost their licence for a month.
On Sunday a family harm incident was attended and a trespass notice served. Separate events. There was also a tramper rescued after they activated their beacon. They were as prepared as one could be, and were even stuck for an extra 2 nights than planned. Wisely, they activated their beacon instead of crossing the river and were able to be helicoptered out. Another tramper was picked up at the same time so a good result all around. Shows the importance of these handy pieces of kit. An elderly gentleman required Police assistance to help him sort his life out when he flew in with no plans and virtually no resources. After a while it became apparent that he required medical attention so the Ambulance came and greatly assisted us.
Take care everyone and have a good week.

Lions Present Training Mannequin to St John
Submitted by Sue Grant
Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions Club were delighted to o cially present a much needed and very useful Resusci Junior QCPR child sized training mannequin to Wanaka St John sta on Thursday 26th January at the Wanaka ambulance station. The ra e draw was won by Kaye Brake, whose prize was dinner for eight, cooked and served by celebrity chef Judith Cullen and wines donated by Maude Wines.
All available tickets were sold, which allowed not only the purchase of Carlitos, the mannequin, (little brother to Carlos the adult mannequin) but also the replacement of the aged and failing oven and microwave in the St John Sta and volunteers’ kitchen in the ambulance station.
Volunteer Dell Taylor thanked the Lions warmly, and explained the importance of the St John volunteers who support and work with the paid paramedics to keep this partly government funded organisation at the ready, round the clock for whatever situation comes their way. Carlitos, the junior mannequin will help enormously with ongoing training of all sta . Dell also emphasized the ongoing need for new volunteers, who would be given training in the skills needed for this rewarding vocation.
