Local wheelie bin deliveries begin this week with each household getting three wheelie bins for the new rubbish and recycling collections starting on 1 July.

Under the new contract, Waste Management will pick up all the rubbish and recycling from both sides of the hill. Wastebusters job is to help people use the service effectively, plus continue their zero waste education work with Enviroschools and Dr Compost.

Having two recycling wheelie bins means the whole district can separate glass so it can be recycled. It’s really important only glass bottles and jars are recycled in the blue glass wheelie bin, as glass recycling relies on a very low level of contamination.

more consistent service across the district, and we can say goodbye to single-use plastic bags for our rubbish.

Residents who are further along the journey to zero waste won’t need to put the 140L rubbish bin out every week, which is great. A priority of the new contract is to reduce recycling contamination as much as possible, so a large 140L rubbish bin helps to avoid people putting rubbish overflow in their recycling bin.

Don’t forget to keep using your crates and blue rubbish bags until 1 July. After that, you can repurpose your crates or drop them off to Wastebusters. And remember to only buy the blue bags you need for the next two months as there won’t be any refunds.

Each of these musicians have received fantastic reviews with comments such as; “It was a spectacle.

The marimba was the length of a car, and Ms Tsuruta danced her way through the performance as if it were modern ballet, double mallets in each hand, landing pinpoint strikes in the marimba keys from above her head, creeping up on moments with a dream-like elegance, in complete control of every movement, and hence of every sound of every musical, mesmerising, moment� and, “Du Plessis possesses a relaxed, unpretentious delivery with an engaging stage presence, compelling her audience to become immersed in her music-making, and the pathways of constant instrumental dialogue were concise and intuitive.�

At the Wanaka concert, they will perform a diverse programme that brings together Tchaikovsky, Arvo Pärt, traditional Japanese songs and the infectious rhythms of Atanas Ourkouzounov.

Yoshiko Tsuruta began playing the marimba as a primary school student growing up in Japan. After relocating to New Zealand, she graduated from the New Zealand School of Music before studying music in Europe. Since returning home to Aotearoa, she has won several competitions and played concertos with many orchestras.

Originally from South Africa, Heleen lectured in cello in Pretoria for 15 years before taking up a position at Otago University. Dunedin is now her base from which she has a busy career performing concertos, as part of various chamber ensembles and with the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra.

Handel’s glorious coronation anthem Zadok The Priest will provide a vibrant opening to the Central Otago Regional Choir’s ‘Light and Glory’ concert to be

performed in Wanaka on Saturday night.

The concert will be held at St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Tenby Street at 7.30pm. Door sales (subject to availability) from 7.00pm. Adults tickets cost $20, school students tickets are free.

This weekend saw the season open for game bird hunters. I urge everyone heading out duck shooting to do so responsibly.

Make sure you have permission to shoot on the land you are entering and have the correct licences (for licences, check the Fish and Game website). Please make sure the rifles are packed away before the alcohol comes out. Police along with Fish and Game officers will be out and about checking people are being safe.

Coast guard were called upon to assist a jet skier who had run out of fuel on Lake Wanaka.

Wanaka Police and the Mental Health Team assisted several people in need of help this week. Remember there are many services available to those who may be going through a tough time. All you need to do is pick up the phone and dial.

Depression Help line: 0800 111 757, Life line: 0800 543 354, Emergency Psychiatric Services: 0800 467 846. It’s a great idea to put these numbers into your phone now. You never know when you or someone you know will need them.

Again, three drivers were caught driving after consuming too much alcohol. One having their driver’s license suspended on the spot and given a date to attend court. The other two receiving fines.

Another driver had their license suspended for three months after they racked up too many demerit points.

A man spotted walking around an industrial area with a firearm was spoken to. Turns out he was using an air rifle to shoot rabbits in a nearby paddock. He realised the concern local residents had and agreed to move on.

Please be aware of a couple of scams doing the rounds at the moment – anything to do with ‘Wellving Asset Management’ who make contact by phone in the first instance or ‘Lakeville Tours’ is sending brochures and scratch & win cards in the mail, claiming you have won prize money. Please do not engage with these companies. They are very organised overseas scams who will take your money.

Those frosty mornings are becoming more regular. Remember you must clear your windscreen before driving. Winding down your side window to put your head out to see is dangerous, not to mention cold and you look like an idiot.

Wanaka Town Centre The recognized key components of a successful retail precinct are: • People – in the instance of Wanaka, an appropriate mix of locals, holiday makers, visitors and tourists. • Access & Parking – the central business district should be readily and easily accessible from all main arterial roads DQG DOVR KDYH VXÉ?FLHQW SDUNLQJ available to adequately service the downtown area. It also needs to be recognized that shoppers prefer parking to be within 100 metres of the retailer or other establishment they wish to visit or, in this instance, the central business district in totem. • 9DULHW\ RI RÎ?HULQJV – a good PL[ RI VWURQJ WHQDQWV RÎ?HULQJ D variety of products intermixed with fast food, cafĂŠs, restaurants and bars. • Signage – display and advertising signage of appropriate size, colour and dimensions.

Currently, the consultants driving the Masterplan for the Wanaka Town Centre are formulating WKHLU Č´QDO UHFRPPHQGDWLRQV DQG presumably, a business case to go forward to a meeting of the Wanaka Community Reference Group on Wednesday 8 th May

2019. Post that meeting, the Masterplan and the business case will be submitted to the Council for VLJQ RÎ? 7KDW VKRXOG EH IROORZHG E\ D Č´QDO SXEOLF FRQVXOWDWLRQ process given the magnitude of the proposed changes and their perceived impacts.

The much lauded public consultation process to date has KDG DW OHDVW RQH PDMRU ČľDZ LQ that the consultants and Council bureaucrats failed to consult with the Wanaka retailers and other business establishments in the central business district who, under the draft proposals, DUH JRLQJ WR EH VLJQLČ´FDQWO\ DQG in most instances, detrimentally impacted on.

This failure to consult has resulted in the retailers forming the Wanaka Town Centre Business Group (WTCBG) which comprises of 34 retailers, fast food outlets, cafĂŠs, restaurants and bars. The WTCBG is in the unenviable position now of having to make representations in an untimely manner as to the detrimental impact that certain aspects of the proposals will have on the businesses represented.

The Council’s consultants and the QLDC bureaucrats should be consulting clos ely with the WTCBG and its constituent members so that they (the Council’s consultants and the QLDC) can properly understand the WTCBG’s concerns and take them into account when

In addition to the likely detrimental impact that certain elements of the Masterplan will have on the Wanaka central business district there is little or no information in the Masterplan as to the impact that the 3 Parks development will KDYH RQ WUDÉ?F ČľRZV DQG VKRSSLQJ patterns of locals, holiday makers, visitors and tourists. If Queenstown is anything to go by, with the developments at Frankton and 5 Mile, the impacts are likely WRbEH PDWHULDO Given the recent controversy over the proposed car parking arrangements, the failure to consult with the occupiers of the central business district, combined with the lack of information on the potential impact of the 3 Parks development and a business case, one wonders why this plan is being driven at such a frenetic pace to its conclusion.

One would have thought that the forthcoming local body elections would provide an ideal forum for candidates for Council and Wanaka rate payers/residents to debate merits or otherwise of the plan and the risk of Wanaka losing its unique character as a consequence. – The Wanaka CBD Watchdog
