MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Garden Club - annual Spring Flower and Photographic Competition The Wanaka Garden Club are delighted to be able to announce that their annual Spring Flower and Photographic Competition will be held on the 24th September 2020 at the Presbyterian Church Hall on Tenby Street. Competitors and visitors can rest assured that we will be following the level 2 guidance throughout the show.

So get out your smart phones and get your stunning images printed and bring them along to the Presbyterian Church Hall on 24 September.

Both competitions are open to all in the Wanaka district and we encourage everyone to enter their spring blooms, decorative arrangements and potted colour. There is something for everyone in the Decorative Arrangements section, with beginner, intermediate and open classes, as well as the bloom classes with Daffodils, Tulips and all the other spring blooms. If you are keen but unsure how to enter, just bring your entries along and we’ll give you a hand to display them correctly. To enter all your entries will cost you just $5.

The Club’s fabulous sales table will open from 2.00pm. There’s an amazing range of potted flowering plants, veggie seedlings, the now legendary worm wee (available in recycled containers), seed potatoes and plenty of home grown produce to choose from. New for 2020, will be a garden White Elephant stall. Please bring your own bags.

‘Yellow’ and ‘Garden Insects’ are the two categories in the photographic competition.

The proceeds from the sales table are donated to local charities.

It never rains on the Lake Hawea indoor market! The Lake Hawea Community Centre started hosting a series of winter indoor markets this year. With limited activities around during the colder months the Community Centre committee decided to introduce the concept of an indoor market to the district. The indoor market is unique in that it is held indoors at the Community Centre and there is also ample parking available. The weather is never an issue and with very few markets operating over the winter months, the opportunity was there to ‘give it a go’. In addition, the Lake Hawea community owns the local facilities and not QLDC. This removes the need to recover high facility hire charges from the vendors, especially when an event has a community focus. Table hire was set at only $10 for 2020.

The market is starting to grow a following from vendors as far afield as Cromwell and Tarras, and visitors coming from not only Hawea, but Wanaka and Makarora. The market has proven popular with fresh food providers, arts & craft people and locals taking the opportunity to make some money from decluttering their homes. Each market day has been different with new vendors displaying their offerings. Our final market day for this season will be held on Sunday 13 September. Due to the support the event has had by the local community, both vendors and visitors, the committee have already been making plans for 2021 when the indoor market will start in May through to August.

The Community Centre is warm and also provides movies for the kids to watch as well as tea and coffee and freshly made scones and biscuits. The committee are delighted with the way the event has developed and been supported by the community.

Generation WAO aims to be a platform for young people get involved and have their voices heard to both create change and move towards a better future for all. However, for many of us we have felt as though the platforms to create this change aren’t so easily accessible. Generation WAO aims to be that platform for young people, where we can be empowered, collaborate and bounce ideas off one another, and keep the conversation going. We needed a platform that was all inclusive - no matter how many weeks, months or years you have lived here. Wānaka is an incredible town on all fronts, and it doesn’t take long to fall in love with the place. With the awe of our beautiful whenua comes the need to protect it and live life in a way that is regenerative, not degenerative. Our community is full of talented, interesting and passionate young people who want to

Generation WAO is an extension of WAO for the younger generation, founded and run by a group of like-minded 20-somethings.

We want to educate, empower and inspire young people to be the change they want to see in the world, to think globally and act locally. With the 2020 elections fast approaching, we hope to provide young people some understanding and meaning around New Zealand politics, in particular the ins and outs of voting, parties, and how to know who you want representing you. Well the Covid-19 restrictions continue into September and it is good to see our businesses trying their best to comply with the requirements, follow any directions given and let us try to keep our community safe from this terrible health problem. On Monday Police attended a vehicle crash in the Cardrona Valley where a local couple were in a vehicle which rolled several times down a bank. Luckily no one was hurt, but the poor car wasn’t well. It is a good reminder to remain focussed all the way to your destination and not to switch to autopilot because you are near home. Police received a report of 12 vehicles broken into at Mount Roy car park, thankfully investigation revealed it was not crime but that severe wind had whipped up lose gravel and damaged the cars. A driver also had their driver’s licence suspended when driving at 129km/ph in and 80km/ph area. Tuesday saw us deal with another vehicle collision in the Cardrona Valley Road, it is again a reminder that despite the arrival of spring one needs to drive to the road conditions. Police were called to disorderly behaviour at the Wanaka Medical Centre and a person was trespassed for two years - our community’s health professionals are here to help, not to be abused so please treat them with the same care they show to us. The patient had to travel to an alternative provider. Police received a report of a vehicle damaged on Anderson Road. Some unhelpful individual had jumped on the roof of the car, Police would appreciate any information about this offending. Wednesday saw us attend another vehicle collision - a reminder to drive to the conditions. Thursday saw two drivers apprehended for excess breath alcohol. The rate of apprehension does not seem to be diminishing, infringement notices were issued for these two offences. Police also dealt with a vehicle collision with a cyclist. On Friday another driver was apprehended for excess breath alcohol at such a level that his licence was suspended and he is facing a court appearance. Saturday saw police deal with a family harm matter, and Police apprehended yet another motorist for excess breath alcohol, who was issued with an infringement notice. Police also dealt with a grossly intoxicated male who became separated from his companions. Sunday saw Police deal with a family harm incident and a trespass matter. Have a safe week, be careful not to drink and drive, treat each other with the kindness you would like to be shown yourself.
