Wanaka Primary School OP Shop The Wanaka Primary School OP shop was orignally opened in 1986 by the late Francis Manson, who with a team of volunteers, set out to raise money for the school. Over the years the shop has worked very successfully, with all money going towards special needs teaching etc.

The shop is manned by a team of eight volunteers and with the help of all those who donate the wonderful goods, the enterprise is a great fund raiser for the school.

We welcome all items including mens, womens, childrens and baby clothing, shoes, books, toys, bedding etc. Also school uniforms, which are much sort after. We do not take electrical items or health and safety items.

The shop opens every Tuesday and Thursday 12 noon - 4pm, and is located at the back entrance to the Primary School at the end of Koru Way, off Totara Terrace.

Annual Plan Council is considering the draft Annual Plan 2013-2014 this week and once the plan is adopted the public consultation process will begin.

All the information you need will be on the Council website www.qldc. govt.nz from next week, including how to make online submissions.

Water demand survey Still on the topic of water, thanks to everyone who took the time to take part in our online water demand survey over the last month.

We had over 143 respondents with 66% of respondents saying they’d heard about the water demand campaign.

CT Scanner Suite Appeal-Thanks!

Set out below is a report from each of the presidents of the Rotary and Lions Clubs of Wanaka, thanking you the community for your help and generosity in raising $36,000. Firstly though, some background.

Central Otago Health Services, the management body for the Dunstan Hospital, spent four years lobbying the National Health Board for a need for a scanner in our area so that we didn’t have to travel three hours one way to Dunedin; so we didn’t have to pay for accommodation in Dunedin; so we didn’t need to be separated from our loved ones unnecessarily.

Thanks to a $1 million dollar grant from Central Lakes Trust the CT Scanner will be delivered to Dunstan Hospital and will be operational this month April 2013.

A room in the hospital is being fitted out to house the scanner and its accessories, including the lining of the wall with lead. This cost is having to be met by the community and the Rotary and Lions clubs of Wanaka, Cromwell and Alexandra/Roxburgh were asked to spearhead the fundraising with a Monster Auction and Garage Sale in each area on February 16 2013.

Now the Monster Auction and Garage Sale is behind us we can celebrate a fantastic effort and give our sincere thanks to many people, Businesses and organisations that made it a success.

There was a small committee under the convener-ship of Dave Saund ers who was part of the Wanaka committee. Dave especially did a huge job and spent many hours sorting out goods prior to the auction. On the day over 20 of our members were present ‘in unifor m’ and were handling the rows of good to be auctioned, feedin g the buyers, recording sales taking money and also cleaning up after. There was also a large group of Lions involved in the days following the auction getting rid of goods that did not sell.

The art auction was a special feature and this raised considerable money.

It was a good experience working jointly with the other service clubs in our town.

This is what we do. We exist to serve the comm unity. We have an excellent set up for catering and recently have assisted at the Cavalcade, the A&P Show. Prior to that we provided food at the Christmas Carols, The Church Gala, dinner for Probus, and Hawea picnic. We also raise funds for deserving youth and provide firewood for the elderly. Recently we have develo ped a Face Book page www.facebook.com/WanakaLions from which we hope other community minded people can be informed and perhaps join us on some of these rewarding projects and activities.

This happened due to the considerable effort put into the planning and the organisation of the event spearheaded by the Scanner Suite Appeal Committee over the two and half mo nths leading up to the 16th February. Thi s consisted of a few key people from the two local Lions Clubs and Wanaka Rotary Club.

Their efforts culminated in the monster Auction and garage sale, a Silent auction and an Art Auction.

A special thanks to Jim Bohm and his team from the Art Society.

Not only did a large num ber of members donate art work to be sold but they organised the col lection and display in ano ther location before the Auction day.

This prompted other arti sts to also donate painting and art works.

Even the younger memb ers of the town became involved with donations to the Appeal from Wanaka Primary Sch ool, Hawea Kindergarten, Montesso ri Pre-school, Wanaka Pre -school, Hawea Flat School to name a few .

Lastly it is thanks to the general public for donatin g goods and to those who came to the Auc tion.

Together, the Upper Clu tha Community raised app roximately $36,000 towards The Sca nner Suite Appeal. The Cromwell and Alexandra districts auction s brought the total money raised to around $85,000. The sho rtfall we hope will be me t by grants from charitable organisations.

Well done and thank you , especially to the memb ers of the three organisations who worked so hard to make this eve nt happen.
