WANAKA COMMUNITY WORKSHOP

MAKE + REPAIR + SHARE

Written by: Wanaka Community Workshop

The Wanaka Community Workshop is now a reality. It has a space at 15 Gordon Road and volunteers are setting up the three workshop spaces. A not-for-profit, the trust is looking for excited people, tools, materials and facilitators to run workshops. Gwilym Griffith-Jones, one of the Trustees, is excited to see the progress and explains “Our tagline of Make + Repair + Share sums up what the Workshop is all about. With a membership you will be able to have access to a workshop with everything from wood working to sewing machines, and people who know how to use them.” Ben Acland, also a Trustee has been at the Workshop all last week “Our first week at the

shed has been a success. Volunteers have moved in workbenches and tools donated or loaned by locals. The painting of walls has begun ready for racks that are being donated by Mitre10, Gwilym has been making a sign and local business Dunlop Builders has donated a load of wood ready to make into work benches.”

The Trust’s goal is to be self-sufficient covering its operating costs within two years by running workshops, paid memberships, a tool library and manufacturing for other not-forprofits. They are currently seeking funding for specific machinery in the machine shop. For more on our goals and what is coming up see our website: www.wanakacommunityworkshop.org.nz

In 2021 the RSA focus for Poppy Day is to highlight the experiences of women and the military.

of their men. In today’s military it is now common to see the men left at home while the servicewomen are on active deployment.

That is both women in uniform and those women who watch their sons, daughters, husbands or partners depart and have the daily angst of never knowing if they will return.

We encourage all to celebrate and thank those women who give so much in either supporting their partners while they serve or serve their country themselves. Make a cash donation for Poppy Day and support the wonderful work the RSA do with veterans and their families. Lest we forget.

As more and more women are serving in the military and are serving in combat roles, we need to pause and celebrate their involvement. Not only are they service personnel, but many military women are also mothers and wives. It’s also very important to remember the sacrifice the women who are left behind in times of conflict, to care for the family and continue with life without the support

CRIME LINE

// by Sergeant KIM CHIRNSIDE

Kia ora all. Our week was wild and varied as it often is. On Monday we were involved in the rescue of a hunter who was badly injured in a fall in the Hawea/Dingleburn area. Due to his good preparation, he was able to be rescued quickly with minimal risk to rescuers. On Wednesday we located a stolen vehicle which was stolen in Cromwell and travelling towards Christchurch. A quick apprehension near Tarras had the vehicle returned to the victim that day. On Friday night a vehicle was taken from Hedditch Street in Wanaka and crashed a short distance away on Plantation Road. The culprit left the scene after hiding the vehicle in the park. Both of these incidents are timely reminders to take your keys from your vehicle regardless of how brief your departure might be. Also on Friday night, a driver was stopped for drink driving on Chalmers Street, Wanaka. Their licence has been suspended and they have a date in court. On Saturday afternoon there was a petrol drive-off at BP. They will be visited by Police shortly and will face some consequences. On Saturday night a patron at a bar in town was ejected for antisocial behaviour and in the aftermath assaulted two staff members. He was apprehended after leaving to go to another bar. He has been charged in relation to these offences. Also on Saturday, Police conducted an ‘anytime / anywhere’ operation targeting drink drivers in our town. Some people will report being stopped where they least expected to be. We were pleased with the results, with one driver found over the limit, which is much better than we have seen previously. But one driver leaves room for improvement. Finally, a quick reminder for all drivers regarding the use of mobile phones. From my observations, members of the public would like the following questions answered. 1) Holding my phone in front of me while I talk isn’t using a phone, is it? 2) Holding my phone as I use it as a map isn’t using a phone, is it? 3) I just like to hold my phone and not use it, so that’s not using a phone, is it? 4) I like to talk on my phone while I drive past the police station. That’s not annoying, is it? The answer to all is yes, it is. Please keep your attention on the road and off your phones. We’ve delivered that message personally to many people this week. Have a great week out there and stay safe.

TOP PADDOCK WANAKA

Top Paddock Wanaka - A premium country-style subdivision of elevated land on the ridge above Wanaka township. Currently being developed into eleven magnificent lots sized between 2007m2 and 3436m2. The naturally rolling contours of the land provide each lot with unique characteristics and attributes along with dramatic surrounding mountain and lake views. The highest sites boast 360-degree mountain and farmland views while overlooking a mature olive grove. Other sites obtain spectacular uninterrupted lake views with the land rolling over to a vineyard with stunning feature schist rock wall. You will know you are at a very special place when arriving at the top of the hill from the tree lined lane which climbs the hill from Studholme Road. Once you stand on the land, the most difficult decision will be which site to choose.

Minimum Wage Increase

With the adult minimum wage increasing to $20 gross per hour and starting-out and training minimum wage increasing to $16 gross per hour on 1 April 2021, businesses need to formalise arrangements impacted by the change in the law. That means varying relevant employment agreements and making sure processes, including payroll systems, have been updated.

Entitlements, such as holiday pay, sick leave, sick pay, etc. will be impacted by these increases and appropriate methods of

calculation need to be considered. Now is also the time for businesses using total remuneration packages, inclusive of mandatory Kiwisaver payments, to ensure the employee is receiving at least the minimum wage.
