The Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions is holding a Summer Soiree this Sunday as a fundraiser for a Hawea family. The family event is for 10 year old Sabina Gibson who has a rare genetic disorder called called Neurofibromatosis Type 1. The range and severity of symptoms varies greatly among sufferers and the rate of its progression is not predictable. Life for the family can be challenging and Sabina knows she is different. She struggles to make sense of the world around her at times and gets very sad and frustrated when she is excluded or rejected - more so as she becomes older. Be a Tidy Kiwi and Keep New Zealand Beautiful are marketing campaigns that have lasted generations. And now two Wanaka women are aiming for the same with their ‘Don’t Chuck Your Muck’ message. But they need the community’s help to spread the word - by purchasing one of their t-shirts (adults and kids), singlets, caps and bags. Proceeds from the merchandise will pay for signage that is being erected on the pylons at Cardrona Alpine Resort - which the company has kindly donated. So when you are going up the new Chondola

NZ (ADNZ), joined the family giving Sabina an opportunity to live as happy and fulfilled a life as possible. After intense training for all the family, Niles has become her very own unflappable companion. Niles has already proved to be extremely valuable by lessening anxiety levels in unfamiliar situations and giving Sabina the confidence and motivation to engage in activities that would have once been well out of her comfort zone. With his special blue coat on, Niles has made the public aware of and more understanding of Sabina’s disability. Having Niles has allowed the family to do more things as a family. Niles kept Sabina calm on many occasions on a family holiday over Christmas that would not have been possible without his assistance. ADNZ is a Trust that raises funds to train dogs to assist individuals and their families who live with disabilities (diabeties, autism, MS). It takes $40,000 and 15 months to train each dog. The Gibson Family has committed to raise $20,000 towards training another Assistance Dog and have so far raised nearly $8000.

Like the past two national marketing campaigns they have grown up with, they are hoping their own one will also become national, and even global. The Wanaka congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses will soon have its own hall. A team of volunteer members from across Australia and New Zealand are currently onsite building the new Kingdom Hall, at 1 Balneaves Lane (beside the Wanaka Vets.) Wanaka members are also chipping in,and over the past two years there has been a marked increase from 35 to near 60. The congregation has never had its own Kingdom Hall - meeting for the past eight years at various locations, including the St John rooms in Wanaka, where they currently meet. Construction site foreman, Rob Clerici, is part of a group of seven JW members who voluntarily travel around New Zealand renovating or building new Kingdom Halls. Last January, Queenstown had a new hall and most recently, Fielding in the North Island. Members of the church with various trade skills, right through to the lawyers and architects, volunteer their time to the projects - for some it is a complete way of life. Rob explained that financing for the new and renovated halls comes out of a worldwide construction fund for Jehovah’s Witnesses, made up 100% from voluntary donations. The halls are built “above and beyondâ€? the minimum building code, adequate parks, landscaping, air conditioning, sound proofing and hearing loops. On or about last Thursday night someone has deliberately knocked over the road signs between the Albert Town Bridge and the Dublin Bay turn off. Five sets of signs have been knocked over which would have taken some force. An examination of the locations reveals large 4WD type tyres. There is also silver paint on the signs. I suspect we are looking for a 4WD utility or similar, likely to be silver in colour or have silver bull bars. This was a deliberate act of vandalism and we would like to identify the offenders. Road policing wise, two drink drivers were apprehended this weekend. Both were from this region. If you see someone who is thinking of drinking and driving stop them. We also attended a crash on the Crown Range Road where a motorist lost control and overturned in the wet. Drive to the conditions. This driver was very lucky to not be seriously injured. A historical theft of a telephone and cards was reported from a handbag in a local bar. How about we keep a close eye on our things and the people around us if this behaviour is going on. Police took another two driver’s licences from drivers who exceeded their demerit points. I have to say losing your licence on demerits is all about ignoring clear warnings at your own cost. A 19 year old was caught stealing from New World. She was arrested and trespassed from New World for 2 years. A foreign couple had been camping on the waterfront at night then leaving their belongings against some bushes during the daytime. With owners not returning for these bags for two days it was very lucky we didn’t start a full SAR on the lake and surrounds. It appeared the owners of the bags had packed them and left them beside the lake and gone for a swim not returning feared drowned. Thankfully to the wonders of social media we located a friend who advised that this is typical behaviour for these two. They were warned for freedom camping. We took a report of theft of an i-Pad from a tent. Theft is unacceptable, however please do not expect everybody else to be honest when it comes to your valuable property. Don’t risk it. Lock it up. Those who are doing Challenge Wanaka this coming weekend good luck and those who wish they were doing it don’t panic, next year will be just as awesome I’m sure. I know this event has an effect on travel times so give yourselves extra time and be patient. It is a great event for Wanaka. Be good and remember an obstacle is often a stepping stone.
