TOKOWHĀ

What a way to finish Wanaka Concert Society’s 2022 concert season! This group of young performance graduates were unknown before they toured throughout the country. Now they are being talked about as up and coming stars!
Tokowhā is quickly building a devoted following, and this concert tour is the first opportunity to hear one of Aotearoa’s most exciting and impressive vocal groups.
Lila Crichton, Matt Barris, Tomairangi Henare and Alfred Fuimaono join to delight with a variety of classical, jazz, musical theatre, Māori and Pasifika songs and more.
Tokowhā has been performing together since 2020, formed while studying at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music’s Classical Performance programme.
Individually these young men have performed throughout the country as soloists in choirs, principal roles in opera, award winning barbershop quartets and as members of different modern opera ensembles.
The quartet is brilliantly accompanied by pianist Alex Jefferies.
The Wanaka Concert Society proudly presents vocal ensemble Tokowhā in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand.
Tokowhā will perform in the Lake Wanaka Centre on Sunday, 20 November at 7.30pm.

Howdy Wanakians, I hope you’ve all been well.
On Monday a family harm event was attended. The individual was caught up with later and some supports put in place.
Tuesday saw some cannabis and associated paraphernalia crop up after a vehicle was stopped. All promptly confiscated for destruction and the driver dealt with accordingly. A note on this that drug driving is just as bad as drink driving and it is something that is becoming more apparent in the town.
Wednesday saw Search and Rescue mobilized for a personal locator beacon activation. The individual was able to be helicoptered out in the end. Great piece of kit these things are, even if you’re out in the hills for just a day walk, it could be useful to rent one out. Thank you to the volunteers from Wanaka Search and Rescue.
The evening had a stoush between friends when it couldn’t be agreed to go swimming or fix a tent. One friend threw a bottle at the window of the others’ car smashing it before hightailing it out of there. Three drivers found themselves at the mercy of the elements and friends for the next three months when their licence was taken from them due to excessive demerit points. Wanaka Interpol Division was activated when we assisted with travel arrangements for two tourists who had lost passports.
Thursday evening had a firearms licence holder served with a revocation notice for some behaviour that brings into question if they are a fit and proper person to hold a licence. A reminder to those who hold a gun licence to keep your wits about you as the silly season approaches with end of year parties etc.
Friday had us dealing with an animal welfare matter, foot patrols in the CBD but in daylight hours, and a couple of other prevention talks with members of the community. The evening passed with little quandary except for an individual who had partaken in a few too many alcoholic beverages. A quick visit to our house was enough for them to realise they’d rather sleep at their house. When bars ask you to leave, then leave. You won’t get in trouble unless we turn up. The next applicant for a sleep at the Police Station has ruined the chances for future drunks wanting a ride home because during his ride home he stole a Police hat. His antics were unearthed when the Constable discovered during his shift his prized hat issued by our Commissioner was missing. Stone the flaming crows. The hat was recovered the next day and the male arrested. Turns out he might have a penchant for these kinds of shenanigans as he has woken up with clothing items not owned by him before.
Saturday night a male from out of town thought it would be a good idea to try to steal a liquor bottle from behind the counter at a bar. He dropped the bottle and then spat at staff members when confronted. A+ in how not to function as an adult. He was arrested and played up the whole time and his mum drove all the way from Dunedin to collect her 20-year-old child.
On Sunday a theft of a mountain bike was reported. If you see a decent looking full suspension green Giant Reign bike abandoned somewhere, give us a bell. Take care everyone and have a good week.
Please join us to celebrate the official opening of the Wānaka Marine Rescue Centre and naming of Wānaka Lakes’ new rescue vessel.
Thanks to the generous support of Central Lakes Trust, Otago Community Trust, Coastguard New Zealand and the local community, Wānaka Lakes’ long planned Marine Rescue Centre has become a reality.
Thanks to a unique America’s Cup partnership with Lotto NZ and Emirates Team NZ, this re-purposed AC36 vessel is one of 22 rescue vessels that will go to communities around Aotearoa.

You may not be surprised to learn that if New Zealand’s rivers were to be placed end to end they would total 9,471 km in length.
But did you know that the streams that feed those rivers total more than 400,000 km! Did you know that the beds of such streams that have been reached by the introduced brown trout tend to be more slippery than those still occupied by native fish?
Or that an ancient whitebait species became ‘landlocked’ into headwater streams of the South Island and evolved into 12 or more new nonmigratory species? Or that streams whose beds are disturbed at an intermediate rate have a higher biodiversity than streams turned over by more frequent spates or not disturbed at all?
Or which of the human-caused impairments
(nitrogen, sediment, water abstraction, increased temperature) is most harmful to stream ecosystems? Well nor did I - until my research team started work three decades ago...
