SeniorNet is a nationwide organisation with a mandate to support and motivate senior communities to enjoy and use technology in their everyday lives. For 20 years SeniorNet Wanaka has been keeping the 50+ community of Wanaka up-to-date with all things tech. The group has recently transitioned to a new model designed to better service its members and open an exciting future. Each month focuses on a key area of technology such as; entertainment, communication, health and wellness and security. The sessions bring in expert speakers each month and are a blend of inspiration, education and practical hands-on hints and tips. Each session aims to have members grow in confidence, having learnt something
new that they can implement in their everyday lives, and maybe gain some new tech lingo to keep up with the grandkids! We provide a supportive environment to ask questions and share experiences or expertise.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS ONE New Zealand – locals driving change for good Written by: Vicki Spearing Everywhere you look, it seems noise is being made about sustainability, global warming, single-use plastics, waterways being polluted, etc. It can be quite overwhelming. We are living in a transition period. We all know we must reduce our carbon footprint and make incremental changes in our lives but how do we do it? And individually, can we really make a difference? Wanaka may be a small town but when it comes to change, this is an advantage. We are an engaged community with incredible talent and skills and if any town can accelerate transitioning to a thriving, low carbon sustainable future, we can. ONE New Zealand is a grassroots initiative and is gaining national recognition as a mover and shaker in the sustainable space. The objective of ONE is to
accelerate transition by driving change from the ground up, one step at a time, through partnership and collaboration. Its framework is the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals – the globally accepted, holistic vision of sustainability with targets on how to get to 2050 and beyond.

Clinic celebrates ten year anniversary Written by: Abbie Barnes Lakes Podiatry reaches a big milestone this week, as the clinic celebrates ten years in business. This small private practice has come a very long way over the past decade. Their podiatrist, James Barnes, relocated back to New Zealand from Melbourne in 2009. He began the business by commuting to Wanaka from a family holiday home in Clyde. In the early days, James practiced from the consulting rooms behind Wanaka Medical Centre in Russell Street, for just two half days a week. He worked out of other locations in town as his business grew, before settling into permanent rooms at Wanaka Lakes Health Centre when it opened in 2011. James’ wife Abbie joined the Lakes Podiatry team
as Practice Manager in 2014. As a team, they now operate a very busy clinic, servicing both Wanaka and Cromwell. With three kids now in tow, they have made their home in Albert Town. After ten years service, they feel they’re getting pretty close to being regarded as ‘locals’ here in Wanaka. James and Abbie would like to take the opportunity to thank all their patients and colleagues for supporting the business over the past ten years. They have a number of patients who have been coming to Lakes Podiatry since the very early days – even a select few who saw James on day one back in July 2009! The loyalty and friendship James has developed with these patients has been invaluable to the success of the clinic. James hopes to continue keeping Wanaka on its feet for many more years to come.

The week started off with the donation box at the Blue Pools up at Makarora being attacked with a grinder and the cash donations stolen out of it over the weekend of 6th/7th July. Anyone having information about this theft is asked to contact the Wanaka Police on 443 7272 or call ‘105’. On the evening of the 8th July there was a nasty vehicle crash on SH6 just north of Makarora. Occupants of the vehicle received injuries when the vehicle rolled over. A big thanks to all those people who stopped and assisted the occupants until Police, Fire and Ambulance staff arrived. On 11th July we dealt with a local driver who happily took the advice of local Police and booked an appointment with his GP to get a medical clearance to continue driving his car. If you know someone in a similar situation and think they may not be fit to drive, then book in a chat with the GP just to be sure. On Friday 12th July, a local driver was spoken to for driving when forbidden and has had his vehicle impounded. Police also dealt with two incidents where people had consumed far too much alcohol. Fortunately friends and family were able to look after those people until they recovered. The big event on Saturday, yes, the Ranfurly Shield rugby match between Otago and Thames Valley. Otago eventually managed to dominate in the second half and won comfortably. A few early season nerves and too many turnovers by Otago but a good hitout with many wins to come. Off the field there were a few issues with alcohol, but otherwise everyone was pretty well behaved. Three drink drivers were apprehended over the weekend which is three too many. Two of them are off to Court to explain how that happened to the judge. Also on Saturday, Police found a home for two horses out for a trot along Muir Road, Lake Hawea. Thanks to Pete and Kirsten for finding us a paddock for them. We received a couple of theft reports over the weekend for jackets and wallets. Please keep an eye on your gear when you go out to the pubs as there are unfortunately some people who are helping themselves to other people’s property.
