The Preschool has a lot to celebrate. We are the original non-profit community based centre in Wanaka, celebrating 30 years. The Preschool replaced a play centre at that time which was located at 106 Tenby Street, where land had been set aside by the QLDC. It took a huge community effort of fundraising, applying for grants and establishing an early childhood centre by families at that time. We are now educating the children of parents who came to the Preschool.

Enviroschools is an environmental action based programme where young people are empowered to design and lead sustainability in their schools, homes, neighbourhoods and country. Part of that journey was the creation of an outdoor programme (the Explorers) where children meet one morning a week at Wanaka Station Park, connecting with nature and gaining a sense of belonging to the environment and the community. The Enviroschool’s kaupapa is about creating a healthy, peaceful, sustainable world through learning and taking action together. The Gala will have an enviro theme and will be held at the Preschool using the Bowling Club car park and entrance to the Preschool through the back gate. It will kick off on Saturday, 27 February at 10.00am and go until 2.00pm. There will be a bouncy castle, carnival games, plants, clothes, food and much more. Everyone is welcome and we hope to see many former families and staff, so we can show off our beautiful ECE environment.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Early detection saves sight MDNZ will be hosting a free Awareness and Education seminar in Wanaka on Saturday, 6 March, 3.00 - 4.30pm at Lake Wanaka Centre. Ophthalmologist Dr Harry Bradshaw will share the latest information on treatments and the management of this chronic disease. Information packs will be available on the day. Like most of the developed world, New Zealand has an ageing population. By 2030, 1 in 5 people will be over 65 years of age. This group will also be living longer than previous generations, and macular degeneration (MD) is increasingly becoming an important public health issue. MD is a degenerative retinal eye disease that causes loss of central vision, resulting in the inability to drive, read, recognise faces, and see colour clearly. MD is progressive and painless, and although it can lead to legal blindness, it does not result in total or black blindness. MD is the leading cause of legal blindness in New Zealand with 1 in 7 people aged 50 years

and older having some evidence of it, with the incidence increasing dramatically with age. One in 4 people over 80 years of age have significant vision loss from MD. It is three times more common that dementia and half as common as diabetes. MD causes blind spots in the central vision. There are two forms of the condition, dry and wet. About 90% of patients have the dry form that slowly progresses over many years. The wet form of MD causes more sudden and severe central vision loss. Macular Degeneration New Zealand (MDNZ) is a registered charity, with the aim to reduce the incidence and impact of MD in New Zealand, and the vision that no one should be blind due to treatable MD. We need to be proactive to increase awareness and promote early detection to the 1.5 million ‘at risk’ New Zealanders to save sight.

Focused on healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing, ‘Our Place’ aims to use fun interactive learning to show how land, water, flora, fauna, climate, and us humans, are all connected. WAI Wānaka will bring their passion about all things water and how it links into our native biodiversity, joined by local plant experts from Te Kākano showing us how to propagate seedlings. We will meet and learn about predators and how to keep them at bay. This place we all love would not be the same without community groups like SUC free and inspired students from MAC’s Team Green and the Kiwi Conservation Club putting in their efforts to combat environmental issues. Kia ora Wanaka. We greet you with the unfortunate news that we are back to Alert Level 2. This does mean some undesirable restrictions, but it is important that we all follow the rules. Police will be out and about assisting with the message. On Tuesday there was a theft from New World, which was followed by a second visit on Wednesday by the same person. We expect they will have a date with us in the coming days. There was a noticeable increase in motorcycle traffic, travelling across the country due to the Burt Munro Festival in Invercargill. We were pleased to see that there were no accidents involving those motorcycles and welcomed the extra visitors to town. On Wednesday a car worthy of retirement was stopped in Wanaka. The vehicle has been decorated with bright pink and blue official stickers ordering it off the road, and some contraband was seized from the driver. On Friday a vehicle crashed off State Highway 6, near The Neck, travelling some 20m down a bank. It was fortunately spotted by a passing helicopter, as it was not visible from the road. Thankfully the sole occupant removed themselves and hiked out. A lucky escape! Saturday evening saw Police conducting a breath testing checkpoint in Cardrona. Sadly, not everyone was adhering to the rules, with one person driving while disqualified, and another over the alcohol limit. Both will be off to court in the coming weeks. On Saturday night Police attended an incident at Lala Land, where a person had climbed on to the roof, quote “looking for a view”. Unfortunately, these were the actions of someone under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. The weekend was busy dealing with several unfortunate scenarios involving mental health. It reminds us to be compassionate with others and to not let friends slip through the cracks when times are tough for them. Today’s Fire Watch is our ﬁrst monthly instalment to let the people of Wanaka and surrounding areas know what your local volunteer ﬁre brigade has been doing since the start of the new year. Before I do that I just want to let everyone know a few facts about the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade. The title is a bit of a giveaway but everyone at the brigade is a volunteer. We currently have 26 Operational Firefighters and 2 Operational Support Officers. We also have 5 Recruit Firefighters who are currently attending their Recruit Firefighting Course in Christchurch. It is a challenging 7 day course but I know they will do well and we look forward to having them on board in an operational capacity.
