The Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is coming to Pembroke Park, Wanaka, on March 18-19, and the call is on people and teams to register. The Relay for Life event aims to ''celebrate, remember, and fight back'' against cancer and is an inspiring and fun community event for people of all ages and fitness levels.

Event and Campaigns Co-ordinator Nicole Rushbrook encourages people to register for this fun event. Participants will camp around a set track and walk (or run) in relay style for 20 hours from 3:00 pm until 11:00 am, all to the backdrop of local entertainers and supports.

Cancer Society’s marketing and fundraising manager, Jonet Warhurst, said, "we are thrilled that Mitre 10 MEGA Wanaka are again onboard as a Major Partner and Mediaworks plus Stonewood Homes are gold partners.

We are looking for local businesses keen to support us as sponsors, prize donors, or provide event services. We need several enthusiastic volunteers to help on the committee, in the week leading up to the event and throughout the weekend.”

The number of people supported by the Cancer Society in the Otago region has doubled in the past five years. The Cancer Society needs to raise money to provide staff and services to meet the increasing demand.

Summer has well and truly hit. While you’re enjoying the warm and sunny conditions, spare a thought for your local Police, wearing what is possibly the hottest summer uniform ever assembled. Don’t make us run too far at the moment.

In between refreshing waters, we’ve had a few jobs keeping us occupied. There has been significant demand on our roads through the week. On Tuesday there was a serious crash on State Highway 6 near Makarora involving 2 cars in a head on crash. There were 6 passengers seriously injured but miraculously no fatalities.

On Thursday a car rolled off Cardrona Valley Road near the ski field with four people on board. Again they are lucky, in this case to have only minor injuries and a deceased fence. This incident comes down to distraction while driving.

A positive trend on the roads was our blitz of drink driving checkpoints on Friday night saw no people over the limit. While a small sample, this is very positive news from our perspective and gives us a target for the upcoming weekend. Sadly, on Monday we did stop someone drink driving at 3pm on Ardmore Street for their 4th time. They will explain themselves to the Judge next week.

A vehicle was stolen from a driveway on Friday night. It has identified a security risk for owners of modern cars, which may have an ‘online’ way of accessing the car remotely without a key. For those with such a vehicle, the access codes or passwords for online accounts need to be treated securely as if they were the key. Don’t worry, we’re not quite at the point where the car drives off

There has been a spate of shoplifting incidents at some of our major chain stores. It’s 2023 and security cameras make this activity a fool’s errand. We’ll be knocking on some doors soon to

Over the week Police recovered 2 very expensive bikes which were taken from unsuspecting owners. While one was recovered through good Police work and a search warrant, the second just showed up in the bushes outside the Police Station. That bike arrived with more questions than answers, but a happy owner at

On Saturday Police attended an assault in the middle of the day on Helwick Street. No one was hurt but a very odd time and place for violence in Wanaka. Enquiries to identify the offender are ongoing. Finally, Police received a couple of reports of people having purchases racked up on their credit card, despite still having the card in their possession. If you do see transactions that you don’t recognise, contact your bank immediately to get a block in place. In some cases, transactions can be reversed if this is done quickly. Stay safe out there.

These 4 huts are joined together, and are the last of the original working men’s accommodation from when the dam was built. They were built by the government with mostly rimu timber and are lasting well (but not so much the paint!!!) Some interior decoration wouldn’t go astray but the rest isn’t so bad.

The huts are individually 3.0 x 3.1m, 3.3 x 3.5m, 3.3 x 3.8m and 3.3 x 3.6m and were designed to be shifted individually. There is also the carport which has a 3.3m span. Included are 3 double glazed sliding aluminium windows (not original of course), a Rinnai gas fire a gas califont and a whole lot of plumbing fittings including shower and toilet. There is also an amount of coloured steel which would be good for recladding if you don’t like painting and a couple of roller doors. All measurements are approximate.
