LINECRIME

Unfortunately, we attended another crash that night, which on this case did involve a significant injury to a passenger. Frustratingly, alcohol was a contributing factor to this crash.
His Majesty’s waka was called into action on Rāmere again when another man was arrested for family related offences and given a ride to spend time in Queenstown Court.
On Rātū Police executed a search warrant in relation to supply of illicit drugs, and it will result in court appearances in the near future. On the same day so much heat was put on another local with a warrant to arrest that he made his own way to Queenstown court to avoid a ride with us.
Kia noho haumaru - Stay safe out there.
The weekend sadly saw a return to the old trend of driving complaints, especially in Cardrona Valley. Whether you’re from Melbourne, Shanghai, or Hawea, you must keep left of the centreline. Police had a steady stream of poor driving reported through the weekend and with some animated gestures, we managed to get the message across to all.
There was a fair bit of intoxication in town over the weekend with Stars In Your Eyes and the Jossi Wells party. Disappointingly the weekend ended with a drink driver, who was caught for the 4th time.

Rāapa saw a report of a Trade Me scam where thousands of dollars were spent on an item, sight unseen, which did not arrive. It is buyer beware out there on the internet. Be very sceptical and if in doubt, don’t hand over any money. Later that day another biker was christened as we suspended another driver for excess demerit points, and Police investigated reports of burnouts in the Hawea Flat area.

Wanaka Police have dealt with a wide range of incidents this week. On Rāhina we started our week with a young tane who was feeling the heat from Police and handed himself in for a warrant to arrest. He was also wanted for a theft from a bar in Wanaka. He enjoyed his Majesty’s taxi to court. A local resident had their driver licence suspended for the second time, resulting from excess demerit points. Here’s hoping for good biking weather coming soon.
Police engaged with Deerstalkers Association this week to clarify legislation changes, especially regarding the security of firearms. A great opportunity to share experience and make sure all licence holders are on the same page. If you have any questions, feel free to come and talk to us at the station.
On Rāpare Police attended a crash at the much dreaded intersection of SH6 and SH84. Fortunately, no serious injuries, but an intersection to be extra cautious at. We look forward to the future plans of a roundabout at that intersection. Back at the station we were handed a large package received in the mail containing a significant quantity of non-prescription drugs. Someone will miss this package, but I’m going to place a large bet that they don’t come in and claim it. We’re open 0900-1700 if you’d like your package.
A reason for protecting the Pass landscape, apart from its photographic beauty, is a really special complex of native orchids and flowering herbs amongst the tussocks such as huge Gentians easily accessible by stepping out from a highway, a rare situation at this altitude. These small plants are at risk of being smothered out by a heavy duty garden plant that is also changing the soil.

Dementia is a major public health issue but it is possible to modify your risk. Research has indicated there are factors which may decrease your susceptibility to dementia - lifestyle choices like exercising, eating well, keep learning, socialising etc.

Why “no” to Russell Lupin?
Upper Clutha Messenger 21st September 2022 3
Native herbs tolerate poor fertility, lupin’s ability to add nitrogen allows additional big weeds to come in and flourish.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS
Four local women have joined forces to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimers Otago. Robyn Brighouse, Lindsey Schofield, Jo Shearer and Caroline Upward have created a team – ‘Wanaka Movers: Just 30 Minutes’. This is to highlight the fact that at least 30 minutes of exercise a day is good for the brain...any activity... walking, running, biking, yoga, pilates, dancing... and MORE.
The month is filled with bike related events and activities across Wānaka, Queenstown and Arrowtown. Local businesses and community groups within the Southern Lakes have joined in Biketober to create an action-packed month of bike events. The month will kick off with a Bike Market at the Wanaka Dinosaur Park from 3.00pm
‘Move for Dementia’ is an initiative from Alzheimers New Zealand to encourage people to get moving and to try and raise funds at the same time. The Wanaka Movers are moving for at least 30 minutes every day in September. They’ll mix up the activities and some days may do even more than 30 minutes!

The Lindis Group’s volunteer commitment to weed, clean up, care for, and care about the lovely wild tussock landscape of the Scenic Reserve is being expended on removing Russell lupin. We are winning, we think, but it is unfortunate it arrived at all.
What would a more Bike Centric community look like? Wao Aotearoa initiative ‘Get SMART, Get Moving’ is dedicating a whole month to figure that out. Biketober kicks off next month and is a celebration of biking, set to inspire the community to get on their bikes, giving it a go and to share the love for cycling.
on Saturday, 1 October. Ride on down to enjoy live music, food and stalls with all things bike related. Other Wao events include a Bike Maintenance Workshop, a Green Drinks evening featuring an interview with Simon Telfer and Amanda Robinson. As well as the Wao Summit events: the Sustainable Community Tour and the Get SMART, Get Moving Film

Before I moved to Wanaka 24 years ago, I was a Naval officer managing the careers of naval women and men and was responsible for the allocation of millions of dollars’ worth of assets. Since then, I have owned and operated successful small businesses, including being a local driving instructor, been a representative on Boards and Clubs, a District Licensing Commissioner, and an RMA Commissioner.
I've interacted with locals from all walks of life, affording me significant insight to their needs, desires, and priorities. My life's experience has taught me to listen and communicate, to consider and respond, and to act with integrity and responsibility.
Whatever the outcome of this election, this community will be represented by many new elected members who have never done it before. Having previously served on the Wanaka Community Board for 12 years, a Councillor for 9 years and Deputy Mayor for 6 years, I come prepared with a significant level of local body knowledge and governance experience. I can hit the ground running and be effective from day one.

My immediate priorities are to:

NICK AUBREY:
I am against three waters as I believe the central government is taking one of our best assets which we can use to benefit our community. For example, I would like to see plastic water bottles go and fresh water stations in. Our community can really profit from an idea like this. What other ideas are out there that we can benefit from?
-LEAD -FRONT-CHEF-KITCHENBARISTAHANDDEPARTIEOFHOUSEINTERESTED?CONTACT

Can we stop the TREND of rates going up?

As I said there is an opportunity in fresh water stations for QLDC. Can the QLDC set up water stations where it is profitable? If it is profitable that money would go back into the community. Are there other ideas out there that the QLDC can profit from? I would work hard to find possibilities which will hopefully lead to the horrible trend of rising rates or at least slow that trend down. I will be a great benefit to our community. I am standing for council to represent our communities. My only agenda is to make our community thrive, hear what you have to say and represent you in our local council.
I have experience in infrastructure. Are we planning for now or for 30 years in the future (it should be 30 years in the future).

Hi my name is Ross McCarthy and I am running for council to reinforce our community. I am 38 years old, have a diploma in industrial design, bachelor in product design and Master’s degree in product design enterprise. In 2016 I was nominated for New Zealand’s young innovator of the year.
Wasteful spending lets get rid of it. Affordable housing, let’s do it, all it would take is an adjustment in the RMA. For example, we should allow new home owners to buy land and build a tiny home which can be moulded into a larger home over time.
