his quilt was produced as a joint venture by local Wanaka quilters with sponsorship from Christofer Robyn Quilts and Print It. Most of the work of putting the quilt together and quilting it was done over two frantic days of stitching in the National Bank where everyone was welcome to watch the process and buy raffle tickets.

Proceeds from the raffle go to the Neurosurgery Appeal to establish a Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Otago thereby ensuring that neurosurgery facilities will be available permanently in this region.

The quilt is currently on display in the foyer of the Wanaka Community Health Centre where tickets are available. They are also being sold at a number of retail outlets in town and in the library until the end of the month.

A male is appearing in court for disorderly behaviour after challenging another customer at a bar to a fight. In a separate incident another local male is appearing in court for Wilful Damage after a gaming machine didn’t do what he wanted and he damaged it.

Two locals were processed for drink driving.

A local male was arrested for urinating in a shop doorway despite the number of toilets the council have provided around the town. You might be surprised with how common urinating in shop doorways is. I'm sure the shop employees enjoyed cleaning up after him the next morning - not!

Police have dealt with a number of local youth for a variety of incidents. A group was warned and taken home after breaching the liquor ban, a youth was dealt with for breaking windows and another was dealt with for making an abusive phone call to an elderly local resident. Our job was done for us here, the resident had caller id, which saved us the job of having to trace the phone call. A timely reminder kids, it may seem like fun at the time, but it's never nice to scare others and it won't seem like much fun anymore when the Police knock on your door. It's not hard for us to figure out who you are.

Several vehicle crashes occurred this week. One cyclist was injured during a crash which occurred at a very slow speed at an intersection. Keep you eyes peeled for cyclists, they have right of way too.

A couple of bikes were reported stolen, one of which was recovered by the owner.

THE TEA TRADE AT MOMBASA - Mombasa is a centre of the tea trade in Africa, and was famous for its weekly tea auctions. Teas are tasted like wines - one taster might “slurp and spit” 600 teas a day, and then drink up to 8 full cups as well. The auction took place in an elegant auction house each Monday and Tuesday. Tea sales are now made electronically from the computer screen - another tradition sadly lost.
