ROTARY CLUB OF WANAKA BOOK SALE ON NEXT WEEKEND Written by: Tony O'Regan

The much anticipated annual Rotary Club of Wanaka Book Sale, comprising thousands of second hand books, is on next week from Friday 2 October to Sunday 4 October.

The book sale has traditionally seen hundreds of people flock to the Lake Wanaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price. Rotary Club of Wanaka president, Mike Elliot said the public response to donating books has been bigger than ever this year.

“We have thousands of books, the storage we arranged is at capacity and books have been coming in consistently since we advertised for donations,” Mike said.

The books have been categorised to make browsing easy, and a coloured sticker indicates the price for each book.

“It’s a big job to categorise and price, but well worth it when we see the response and the funds we can raise for the community,” Mike said.

The book sale will take place over three days at the Lake Wanaka Centre.

Hours for Friday 2 October and Saturday 3 October are 10.00am - 6.00pm and for Sunday 4 October 10.00am - 2.00pm.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS NCEA Resilience Coaching: Workshop for Yr 11-13 students 2020 has been a year of unexpected change and challenge. It has been tough on many, including those who are about to sit their NCEA school exams. The ability to dig deep and tap into one’s ‘resilience’ is undoubtedly being tested.

Research demonstrates a reduction in levels of resilience, coupled with a growing rate of anxiety and depression in our youth.

Compounding pressure to succeed, fit in, measure up and achieve, is having an unhealthy impact on those ill-equipped to manage. It begs the question… ‘How do we grow resilient young people that can blossom under adversity?’

TAOL (The Art Of Learning) facilitator Alan Reilly is offering support. NCEA Resilience Coaching is a 1-day workshop being held in Wanaka during the school holidays.

The importance of mindset, understanding thinking processes, recognising the value of ‘failing well’ for learning, motivation and purpose, is combined with gaining tips, tools and strategies to aid success with study.

Developing these skills not only sets us up for achievement in school, but success in life.

To encourage participation in this unique opportunity, the cost is set as a koha (a donation). Pay what you can or wish.

Life Education teaches children the importance of keeping active and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Heartland Otago Southland Trust is inviting the Wanaka community to join them over the next couple of months, as they live these values, get moving and raise funds to keep the Trust running.

“We’re really looking forward to meeting our teammates and seeing what people can achieve in the virtual event – it’s a fun way to work up your weekly activity to achieve a significant goal” says Margaret Box, Trust Chair.

“I know a few Wanaka children have signed up for the virtual event already and are aiming to ‘run a marathon’ over several weeks, just like Mum or Dad who are runners.

Harold is getting a team together to participate in the Queenstown Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km event on 21 November, and he’s encouraging you to join him. Seek sponsorship from peers to take on this challenge and ‘fly the flag’ for Life Education.

Life Education is a charitable trust and receives no government funding, so fundraising is vital to keep programmes going in our schools.

Wanaka Primary School have already had sessions with Harold and Pip in the mobile classroom earlier this year, and they will be visiting Mt Aspiring College in term four.

There was a crash out on Timaru Creek Road on Tuesday where one vehicle drove off, luckily no one hurt, but we think someone might have some dents in their rear bumper that they might want to report?

Thursday another scam was reported. If you get a phone call from a person claiming to be your bank, or another financial institution, think before you give out any personal information. These fraudsters will sound very convincing and will likely make a strong case for why they need your details urgently. If in doubt, take their name and call the company back using a phone number you’ve looked up in the phone book, or come in and see us if you’re really unsure and we’ll help you out.

We also had a burglary reported out towards Hāwea Flat late in the afternoon. We hope this is just a case of curious children, but that still doesn’t make it ok. Please look out for your neighbours and they’ll do the same for you.

Friday night saw our Prevention Team out and about with a licencing officer from QLDC visiting all the bars. It was really good to see managers having good processes in place re COVID and people still supporting the local trade.

Later that night, a driver thought that the roads were a bit bland and decided to decorate them with tyre rubber in a few places. Officers were like a dog after a bone and the Prevention Team picked up the driver soon after and took his vehicle for 28 days.

On Saturday a drink driver, who had also been smoking cannabis, provided a high breath alcohol reading and has lost more than just their car for 28 days.

Sunday was the official closing party at TC. Our awesome Prevention Team were out and about up the ski field getting amongst it, (although apparently they scored only 5/10 on their fancy-dress).

They also ran an alcohol checkpoint with our Road Policing and Wanaka Officers, checking over 500 vehicles, and only having 25 drivers with alcohol in their system – but ALL under the limit. Well done Treble Cone on a well-run close-down party!

In the old days, rugby players were farmers, builders and tradesmen, and there was something more honest about it. They played with heart. Now, they’re professionals being paid to play for different teams. We’ve lost something, and I think it’s the same in politics.

We can learn something from the old days. I’m not on the left or the right, I am running as an independent for the Waitaki electorate. I’m not affiliated to any party. I feel a representative of a district should represent firstly the people of that district, not a party line.

I will try to make decisions based on input from experts in their fields, and from consultation with the community. The people should be involved in the decision making process, in the

true spirit of a ‘’Representative’’ democracy. I know I might seem like I’m making fun of politics sometimes, but I do really care. And I think you deserve to be heard better. It’s hard to take politicians seriously, and I can’t help a bit of tongue and cheek. I feel the politicians have it coming to them and I feel the public might secretly enjoy it.

Parliament does look like a bit of a circus sometimes, and you might need a sense of humour to survive it. I feel I can take it and give it out it equally. I’d make the Waitaki electorate proud to have someone independent that can stand up by themselves in parliament. I’ll level with you, I’m not a politician. I won’t have all the answers to all the questions.

But I am one thing; I am honest, and I care about the public – all of the public. I get along with everyone most of the time, and I don’t hold grudges. I am interested in what the people have to say. And I’ll promise you one thing, I’ll always call it as I see it.

The Wanaka A&P Show is delighted to announce a new veggie growing competition.

Open to local families and individuals, avid green thumbs or new veggie growers. Your veggie growing space can be as big as 9m and can be raised beds or in the ground. It will be full of healthy vibrant plants and may include flowers too. There are two classes for judging: family and open.

The A&P show will run workshops and provide advice throughout the competition, helping you to grow your ultimate veggie garden.

The role: We are seeking a Primary Care Assistant/Phlebotomist with experience working within a clinical support environment. This position is part-time, working at our clinic located in Wanaka Lakes Health Centre.

Additional hours may also be available to cover leave.

In this position, you will take responsibility for: • Phlebotomy (blood tests) and routine diagnostic tests • Patient assessments including routine health screening (e.g: blood pressure monitoring, ecg’s) • Support clinical staff as required
