On Sunday, 4 December from 11.00am – 2.00pm, the Albert Town Community Association Christmas Party in the Park is happening at McMurdo Park, Dale Street. This fun, community event has not been held for two years because of Covid restrictions but is back bigger and better than ever.

The focus is on families with the Noddy Train, Bouncy Castle, Mini Muscles, face painting plus coffee cart, Mr Whippy and the Lions Food Stall. Sack and egg and spoon races with great prizes for the kids, plus the keenly contested gumboot

throw for adults. Raffles with generous prizes are available. This year, the local band, Doubtful Sounds will be entertaining the crowd so bring a seat, sunhat and refreshments, and sit back and enjoy the music. The highlight for many is the arrival of Santa.

Good morning/afternoon or whenever you are reading this, fine Wanaka folk.

So, our round up starts with an old favourite this week, driving complaints. They are starting to come through thick and fast now, and unfortunately many are relating to rental cars. So be careful when driving out there and don’t get too complacent as you never know when a vehicle may be on the wrong side of the road or not understand New Zealand Road rules. Drive defensively and stay safe folks.

Another old chestnut for the week, drink driving. There were a few people caught on the road with excess silly juice in the system. The levels ranged from high 400’s to high 800’s. Some were caught at checkpoints around town while a “bush doof” at Timaru Creek Saturday saw 3 caught on their way out in the morning. Now please be warned, a good night out followed by 3 – 4 hours sleep is not a remedy to get you sober enough to drive in the morning. We will be breath testing everyone stopped any time of the day so please think before you get behind the wheel in the morning.

Reports of stock on the road are also starting to increase. Now I grew up in a city but despite that I have still yet to see a cow, sheep or deer with opposable thumbs who can open their own gates to get out. So, with that, if you own stock, it might be a good time to check your gates and especially fences for anywhere stock can escape. I know this is a big task for some but worth it in the long run, I’m sure.

A big shout out to the local Land SAR team for the rescue, over Thursday night Friday morning, of a trail runner who underestimated the Gillespie’s Pass out near Makarora. These are a dedicated group of people who put themselves out to help others who get lost in our majestic hills and lakes area. They do a fantastic job and sometimes don’t get the recognition they deserve, so well-done team I’m sure the person rescued was very appreciative.

Thursday night saw a high level of intoxicated people around town, some stumbling about and with Christmas arriving very soon decided to imitate a tree ornament and ending up spread in bush. Remember there is a liquor ban on around the lake front in town so please refrain from drinking while out on the street. Celebrate not inebriate.

Friday night brought out a male who decided to drive very intoxicated and dangerously around town. Luckily it was early hours of the morning with not too many people around, but those who were out were placed in danger by this driver. He finally stopped when a tyre popped causing the car to grind to a halt. Most disappointing was a group of people encouraging him to drive even more recklessly than he already was, not realising the danger that he posed to himself and others. The driver will be explaining himself to

Magical Music from Mozart to Madden

The Central Otago Regional Choir ‘s early December concert series is a rare opportunity to not only hear several works written by the highly regarded New Zealand composer Richard Madden QSM, but to have that same humble but very gifted man conducting the performances. Richard’s music has often been composed for special occasions of a deeply personal nature, such as weddings for family or friends. The poignancy of his writing is immediately appealing. His anthem How Beautiful Upon the Mountains was chosen for the memorial service for Sir Edmund Hillary in 2008, in the presence of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The programme is interspersed with favourites such as Franck’s Panis Angelicus, Mozart’s Ave Verum and Laudate Dominum and begins with Mozart’s Missa Brevis (Short Mass) in Bb, K. 275. The string and organ accompaniment is provided by an impressive string ensemble and the effortless skill of organist Kemp English.

The magic continues when Kemp is joined by his

partner Assistant Concert Master of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Yuka Eguchi. They will premiere works especially written for them by Norwegian composer Mons Leidvin Takle, after which Yuka will astound audiences with her performance of Paganini. The choir enjoys providing opportunities for young artists to perform and this time is delighted to feature Sarah Hubbard (soprano), a finalist in this year’s Lexus Song Quest opera competition.

Rainbow Run kicks o Summerdaze

What better way to say goodbye to Covid and hello to summer than a 5km fun run while being blasted with corn starch at five different coloured stations. Friends, family and flat mates get together, dress up and have a blast!

The Night n’ Day Rainbow Run will launch the Summerdaze campaign in Wanaka at Eely Point on Friday evening, November 25 at 6.30pm.

Thanks to a number of partner groups that have come together to make this awesome event happen. Station Sponsors; QLDC, Ray White Real Estate, Jennian Homes, Forsyth Barr and Health 2000 will be on hand to bomb you with colour as you run or walk the gorgeous Eely Point track. The Fire brigade Mint, Kahu Youth, Wanaka Cubs will also be there to assist and Takekarara School will

be there with cold drinks and food.

Eely Point is a really cool spot to hang out after the 5km run/walk. QLDC and Sport Central will have the Hunger Ball, Inflatables, Zorbs and play trailers there so friends and family can hang out, relax and enjoy a Night n’ Day ice cream.

Night n’ Day Rainbow Run tickets cost $10 per person or $30 for a family of four and can be purchased at www.sportotago.co.nz .

Tickets can be purchased on the night and any profits go to Sporting Chance, supporting children into sport.

This popular event will return from 10.00am to 2.00pm on 26th November, showcasing products by local crafters, makers and zero waste shakers.
