BIG HEARTS TRACTOR TREKKING TO WANAKA Written by: Annabel Roy
On Thursday 25 March, a group of kiwi blokes driving their Chamberlain tractors will depart from New Plymouth, heading to Wanaka. That is where the very first Heartland Tractor Trek begins. This fourteen day kiwi tractor adventure is being run by a group of tractor loving mates that have formed the Chamberlain Owners Group (COG's) and one member in particular, Steve Day. He has his own story to tell. Steve's grandson Oliver was born with serious heart defects and will need to have multiple surgeries and treatments throughout his life. After seeing the support his family received from Heart Kids, Steve decided he wanted to give back and from there the Heartland Tractor Trek was born. At a total distance of around 2,200kms, the trek will travel from Taranaki to Wellington and ferry to Picton. From there they will head to Rangiora to meet the rest of the trek participants. The convoy
will continue heading South, visiting towns along the way, meeting locals, schools and clubs, shaking buckets and increasing awareness for Heart Kids. They will eventually arrive in Otago to be part of the three day, Wheels at Wanaka event, before travelling north again to complete their journey in Rangiora. “Wheels at Wanaka is delighted to have Heart Kids NZ as our national charity of choice for 2021. One in every one hundred babies born in New Zealand has a congenital heart defect, so we’re honoured to partner with the Heart Kids team to donate a percentage of show profits to the next generation of healthy-hearted fighters and big rig drivers - if they so desire!” says event General Manager, Allan Dippie. This is just one of three tractor trekking groups converging in Central Otago for Easter weekend, along with a convoy of 100+ Land Rover owners and vehicle fans from all corners of New Zealand. The Great Migrant Brainstorm comes to Wānaka! The Great Migrant Brainstorm is the first event hosted by a new & local, migrantsupporting organisation: The Kiwi Kit Community Trust. Born out of a desire to support migrants, this organisation and event has been created to give migrants and locals a chance to codesign the next chapter of our community together. TGMB was a huge success in Queenstown and now it’s coming to Wānaka! Two sessions: Thursday 25 March, 11.00am - 2.00pm and 5.30 - 8.30pm will be hosted at the Wānaka Community Hub for free with food, conversation, and listening included! The Kiwi Kit Community Trust is currently a team of 3 volunteers: Kelsey Powell (US), CEO & Founder of The Kiwi Kit (a business that helps people move to New Zealand), Franco
written by Kelsey Powell
Nobell (Argentina), Operations Manager, and Sydney Wallace (NZ), Culture and Events Manager. Kelsey wanted to ensure she gave back to the community that has given her so much support, Franco wants to help give a louder voice to migrants, and Sydney is passionate about ensuring the Māori community is involved and her culture is celebrated in order to best develop the link between locals and migrants. Come along to The Great Migrant Brainstorm if you are a migrant or someone who cares about migrants and wants to voice your opinions, concerns, ideas, and dreams to be heard by this new organisation motivated to create solutions to fill the gaps in our community. Being only the second article I have written, and being fairly new to the Wanaka Police, I thought I would just address some FAQ that I have received particularly late at night after the bars close. 1. Yes, it is a taser and no I can’t zap your mate for fun. 2. No, I can’t arrest your mate and put him in handcuffs for fun. 3. Sorry I probably don’t know your mate, relative or ancestor who was/is in the Police. 4. Yes, we are very community minded but probably can’t give you a lift home. 5. No, he’s not the one we are looking for. Well this week has been a mixed bag with some of the same old stuff popping up again, yes drink driving. It’s a shame but the area seems to be able to punch well above its weight when it comes to this, a record we don’t want. With 6 people being picked up and having to appear in court or awaiting blood results. Unfortunately some very high readings, with three readings 3 times and above the limit. We can all play a part in reducing this and looking out for your mates. Disappointingly a burglary occurred at the A&P show last weekend with various items of R M Williams apparel being stolen. Enquiries are continuing to identify the culprits so be aware of anyone trying to sell items of this clothing line cheaply. And while we’re looking out for suspicious stuff, Beacon Point Road residents, Police are looking for anyone who has information in relation to an attempted theft of a boat from a property on Beacon Point Road sometime over the weekend 13-14th March. Second-hand information suggests someone has approached the driver of a vehicle that had reversed up a driveway and was about to hook a boat on before speeding off. Please contact Sergeant Darren Cranfield if you can assist with this. There have been a couple of thefts around the area this week, with an unusual one of the hydraulic door closer from the toilet door of the unisex toilet on Allenby Road. If you are going to use the toilet you may have to whistle loudly as the door might not close properly. This week has seen a quantity of jewellery handed into Wanaka Police this includes rings, bracelets, watches, and necklaces, so if you have lost items like this come on in and see if we have got it. While on the subject Police get a lot of found property handed in, so if you’ve lost a phone, wallet, bag, or anything pop on in as we just love to reacquaint items with their rightful owners. And finally, good work by the local Search and Rescue guys this week by recovering some bones believed to be from a deceased climber in the hills from about 1976. These will be repatriated to the family in due course, helping to give closure to what I’m sure has been a lengthy grieving process. Well, have a stunning week folks and let’s hope the weather keeps up despite that all too familiar nip in the air now indicating winter is not too far away. y

WANAKA HOUSE REQUIRED for the month of August. Ideally a warm, executive style house. We are a family of four (mum, dad and two adult children who may visit for up to 2 weeks), and would like to rent a furnished house with at least 3 bedrooms this August. We are non-smokers and don’t have pets. A view of the lake would be great. Flexible on dates. We expect to travel around the lower South Island and would like to have a Wanaka house as a base.
