The store opened on 2nd July in the new Three Parks area. The new store has customer parking available and a place to easily drop off donated goods. On opening day, the Wanaka & District Lions Club ran a BBQ and Shieldy was out entertaining the 100 customers that came through the doors. Family Stores are a great place to donate household goods, clothing and furniture - and to buy them at an accessible price. The goods sold instore make a huge difference to people’s lives, with profits supporting our local and regional community work. Currently, The Salvation Army has a case worker/ positive lifestyle facilitator available in Wānaka providing a range of services including welfare support, advocacy and a positive lifestyle programme, which encourages participants to explore and reflect on their experiences and skills, working towards positive change. Hello Wanaka, I hope you have all had a good, if not wet week. The weather has certainly played a part in our workload over the past week with crashes again coming to the forefront, mainly up on the Crown Range. As to be expected the traffic along the Cardrona Valley Road is certainly very heavy at times with the ski field being very well attended. Unfortunately, this leads to some individuals deciding that their need to get to and from the mountain outweighs others safety. So, you may well have seen an increased presence from Police in the mornings out that way. This is set to continue so you have been warned, keep your speed down and drive to the conditions please. There was a rescue from a gully overlooking Glendu Bay where a person had decided to come a different way down from Roy’s Peak, slipping and falling and becoming stranded on a rocky outcrop. Luckily his cries for help were heard from staff at the campground and the alarm raised. He was eventually winched from the rock by helicopter and flown to Dunstan Hospital with superficial injuries.
Alcohol has again played its part around town, either by way of drunken disorderly behaviour or drinking and driving. There was an incident at the Night 'n' Day store, where a male became aggressive towards staff and other customers, as well as people being trespassed from some local bars for unacceptable behaviour while intoxicated. So, as always please keep an eye on your mates while you are out drinking, everyone wants to have a good time but know when to call it night.
There have been a few vehicles stopped, either randomly or at checkpoints, and drivers given penalties of either fines for low level alcohol, or off to court for two individuals with breath alcohol results of 806 and 935. These levels are unacceptable and place other road users at great risk, but despite raising this issue many times it seems, Wanaka, some just don’t want to do better. So, remember these people doing this are your friends, family and workmates and they may kill your friends, family or workmates, so don’t condone it. Call these people out as peer pressure may help to change their behaviour and make our roads safer. We are also now concentrating on other roading behaviours as it has once again become a highlight over recent weeks. Speed and failing to stop at stop signs have again become a focus. Remember there is a hint when you approach a stop sign, it says STOP. If your time is so valuable you can’t stop for a stop sign, might I suggest you leave home earlier to make the time, it may just prevent an accident or much worse. Once again we seem to be accumulating a vast inventory of found property. We have been able to reunite some with its rightful owners which is always pleasing, but others we are still holding onto. At present we have a fleet of bicycles which have been handed in to us taking up way too much space at the back of the station which we would love to give back. So, if you have lost some property why not chance your arm and come up to see if we have it. It will only take a minute out of your day and may reacquaint you with some longlost valuables. We are also bracing ourselves for the influx of found property off the ski fields. So, until next time, stay safe, drive courteously, and watch your alcohol intake.

The talk will highlight the key aspects behind the phenomenal growth in green hydrogen (hydrogen produced by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable electricity) impacted by geopolitical and climate pressures driving a global shift in energy agendas. The speaker will outline Fabrum’s NZ developed intellectual property and its impact internationally in developments spanning the future of aviation. Much of it underpinned by cryogenics, the storage of substances at very low temperatures, typically below -150°C.
The event features a 25km kayak on Lake Wānaka and down the Clutha River, followed by a 43km mountain bike through iconic single tracks and a 14km trail run along the Wānaka lakefront.

He explains that coaching at a junior level does not require technical skills, and support will be provided. There is a wealth of cricketing experience and knowledge in the Upper Clutha community, which the Club is hoping to tap into.

The event is organised by the Challenge Wānaka Charitable Trust, a not-for-profit organisation that donates its profits to local charities and community groups. In 2020, donations to the Aspiring Rotary Club were used to help build the Junior Bike Park at Eely Point and for every corporate team that enters, $50 is donated to Te Kakano. The Trust actively works to subsidise youth, adaptive, and community participation opportunities for athletes of all ages and abilities such as the Secondary Schools, Junior and Adaptive Challenges. As a charitable organisation, the Trust relies on the support and generosity of sponsors and benefactors, with 30% of the festival’s income being dependent on donations.
