NETBALL SEASON IS FAST APPROACHING

Mount Aspiring College Netball Club (MANC) are excited about the 2023 Netball season.

The season kicks off with the AGM at 7.00pm on 8th February, 2023 at Mt Aspiring College. This year the Club is actively seeking a new President. The current President has moved onto other local Sports Club Committees. MANC has proven systems and policies in place and planning for the 2023 season is well underway. The President’s role involves chairing the monthly meetings and overseeing the Club’s various sub-committees. No netball experience is necessary and open to all Community Members. Janine Laney, the Club’s Head Coach and Southern Blast 2023 Manager, also brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the Club. MANC is a progressive club striving to offer netball training, development and games to year 7 to 13 students.

Last season the Club had in excess of 220 members! The Club is always looking for new coaches, umpires and committee members. Preseason training starts in February with the playing season commencing in May. For the past two years MANC have been part of an exciting Collegiate Grade for years 7 up, including members of Holy Family School. This encourages similar skilled players to compete in a fun environment to foster a lifelong love of netball.

If you are interested in being President, committee member, a coach, umpire or give one off help, the Club would love to hear from you. Please email mtaspiringnc@gmail.com or call Joanna 021 888 753 or Meg 021 2059 350 or Janine 029 5480 069.

CRIME

Kia ora Wanaka,

Here is this week’s Crime Line.

There were a number of vehicle crashes during the week. A moped and cyclist crossed paths in Albert Town resulting in the cyclist receiving some nasty injuries. A crash was reported via the front counter of the Police Station where a parked vehicle has been hit and the offending vehicle not stopping and carrying on. CCTV will lead Police to the offending vehicle. A vehicle turned in front of another vehicle on SH6 at Hawea Dam resulting in a neck injury for one of the passengers.

A number of the Wanaka Community were stopped and processed for drinking and driving this week. A range of results from infringement notices being issued to having to explain their actions to the Judge at Court. It’s no secret that the Police are out and about and you will be stopped.

Police assisted FENZ with a fire near the Clutha River by SH8A. A number of drivers had their driver licence suspended throughout the week for having excess demerit points.

There were a spate of burglaries and vehicles broken in to in the Hawea area during the week. Two young people were nabbed and arrested for these offences.

A number of infringement notices were issued to drivers of vehicles on our roads. Speed, cellphones, seatbelts, Stop signs and driver licence breaches were the theme for this week.

Plenty of property was handed in to the Police Station over the week. If you seem to be missing an item, please pop in and check to see if we have it.

Underage drinking and possession of alcohol seem to be current trends for our Wanaka youth. A number of youths were dealt with for possessing alcohol in public and consuming alcohol without adult supervision.

Police were called to a Wanaka address in the small hours to assist some rather distraught homeowners who thought a snoring hippo was asleep on their couch. Further inquiries established it was not a wild animal but rather an unknown heavily intoxicated male who entered the property and tucked himself to sleep with a blanket on the couch. The male was woken and assisted the 5 kms to his actual home address.

It is a timely reminder about water safety. Police have recently coordinated several water rescues. These range from floating down the river without lifejackets and becoming stuck, stressed or near drowning, to boats colliding. Please don’t go above your limit. The water is unforgiving.

Look after each other Wanaka and keep up the great mahi.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS

Tramping with a Purpose!

A call for new volunteers to join our Forest and Bird Trapping Group

The Central Otago Lakes Branch of Forest and Bird have an active and enthusiastic group of volunteers who clear predator traps at Makarora and surrounds. Our focus is on saving the threatened Mohua in Makarora. Although the reality is, we are having a positive e ect on all the native wildlife in our area. There is always more to do, so if you have one day a month where you could o er your help, we’d love to hear from you. The terrain is variable and there are di erent lines suitable for all tness levels. Trips are normally

just a day, once a month on a regular roster, but we also need some energetic people who can do overnight trips to more remote country. New volunteers will be teamed up with more experienced trappers until they feel con dent and we always do our trap lines in pairs. The bene t for you is that you’ll be making a di erence for our native species, meeting new people, getting a monthly excuse for a walk in the bush and the lovely drive to the Makarora area.

If you’re interested, please contact: Allan - allsun@xtra.co.nz

These 4 huts are joined together, and are the last of the original working men’s accommodation from when the dam was built. They were built by the government with mostly rimu timber and are lasting well (but not so much the paint!!!) Some interior decoration wouldn’t go astray but the rest isn’t so bad.

The huts are individually 3.0 x 3.1m, 3.3 x 3.5m, 3.3 x 3.8m and 3.3 x 3.6m and were designed to be shifted individually. There is also the carport which has a 3.3m span. Included are 3 double glazed sliding aluminium windows (not original of course), a Rinnai gas fire a gas califont and a whole lot of plumbing fittings including shower and toilet. There is also an amount of coloured steel which would be good for recladding if you don’t like painting and a couple of roller doors. All measurements are approximate.

Expressions of interest are invited by no later than 5pm on Monday, January 30th. Early expressions considered. Phone 0274 364 458 to discuss or for an appointment to view.
