The inspiring and action-packed Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka is just over three weeks away and we are looking for volunteers to join the amazing Crombie Lockwood volunteer crew. With a brand-new course in stunning Glendhu Bay, we know athletes, volunteers and spectators will find it epic and so much fun! Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Half takes place on Saturday, 20 February, with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge on Friday, 19 February and the Puzzling World Intermediate and Mitre 10 Secondary Schools and Adaptive event on Thursday, 18 February. As a charitable trust, the Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust is dependent on the goodwill, knowledge, skills and valuable time of volunteers. The Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka team knows volunteers are the heart and soul of the

event and are currently on the lookout for anyone who is keen and eager to help deliver this exceptional event. There are plenty of roles for volunteers of all ages and abilities from Monday, 15 February for the week leading up to race day. Roles range from motorbike marshals, to safety kayakers, to aid station helpers. As a volunteer, we will provide you with food and drink, and will hold a big thank you party. Volunteering at Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka provides an opportunity to make new friends, learn new skills and have lots of fun. The team would love to hear from you, so please email Sarah, Volunteer Manager at volunteer@challenge-wanaka.com for more details.

The Senior Club returns for pre-season training at 6.30pm on Tuesday, 2 February at Kelly’s Flat. They had 50 players at their first pre-season training last season and invite anyone who’s keen on playing ball to come down, get a feel for the Club and choose the level you’re keen to play at.

The Junior Club will be starting back training during the first week of March. Dates and times for each age group will be sent through to parents when the school year begins.

For the men this year, there will be two competitive teams and at least one social team. The Premier team - with coach Ian Bell at the helm - will be building on their fourth-place finish in last season’s ODT Southern Premier League. Leon Roode’s Premier Reserves will

Great info for surviving in Wanaka.

Spring into action! This Saturday, January 30, at 10.00am, we are having an open community working bee for the Wanaka community spring. The spring is in need of a good tidy up and some good loving presence to help her to shine and keep up the good flow. So many wonderful local people and visitors, local businesses and organisations put such a lot into the creation of the community spring. This is a fantastic resource for the community. The other purpose of the spring is to acknowledge, honour and celebrate the waters of the Upper Clutha and Aotearoa, and to create a place of love and healing, that then literally flows into the lake to hopefully support the immune system and health of our

It’s time to give something back. There will also be a ceremony at the end of the working bee, with crystal singing bowls, invocation, gratitude and Karakia. We are also creating a ‘Friends of the springs group’ to help with ongoing maintenance, beautification and magic. Love to see you there! With respect and love. Our friend Jhufel Mangubat has been in Wanaka for 5 years and has worked at New World Wanaka, he needs our help. We are holding a Sausage Sizzle fundraiser for Jhufel around Wanaka town on Thursday 28, Friday 29 and Saturday 30 January. Jhufel had a brain haemorrhage and had his first brain treatment (Stereotactic Radiosurgery) last Thursday (January 14). Three days after the radiosurgery, he suffered another a brain haemorrhage and was airlifted to Christchurch Hospital. He had open brain surgery which has been successful, and he is currently at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). His first treatment was funded by the NZ Government because he still had an Interim Visa. Unfortunately, the day after the radiosurgery, he learned that his application for a Work Visa was denied and he was given a Visitor

Visa, which means all the cost of the second surgery, the doctors’ fee and the hospital, will be shouldered by him and his wife. Mr. Jhufel has been working in New Zealand for almost 5 years now, but this unfortunate situation has happened to him. His wife (Rita Mangubat) is facing a big challenge where to get the money to pay the hospital bills. She cannot work as she is the primary carer for her husband. Rita and Jhufel expect to pay around $100k or more for the hospital bill. This is a huge amount of money, and so we are appealing for your help.

Please join us for the Sausage Sizzle, or if you are able, please kindly donate to www.givealittle.co.nz/cause/ seeking-help-to-raise-funds-for-jhufel-manguba Every little helps and we appreciate any support possible from this wonderful community. Thank you, Jenica.

CRIME LINE

// by Constable BEN WALLBANK

What a change to last week’s hot, summer days! It’s fair to say that we’ve seen all four seasons this week, but remember there’s no such thing as bad weather… just the wrong clothes! I’ll start this week’s Crime Line off by recommending that you keep an eye on your letterboxes, especially if you’re in Hāwea. It seems some of our younger generation are trying out their skills to be posties, maybe their parents should tell them that the post goes in the box, you don’t take it out. Throughout the week you might have seen some friendly, but unfamiliar boys and girls in blue, with another focus on our roads. Unfortunately, they were kept busy with a number of people driving over the alcohol limit. These checkpoints can happen anywhere, at any time, so don’t take the risk and better still, just don’t drive if you’re out for some drinks – it’s not worth your licence and everyone else’s safety. Police were called later in the week to an argument between a couple who were experiencing difficulties in understanding some new relationship boundaries. Police supported the pair who hopefully they have a bright future together. First thing Saturday morning, Police and Wanaka Search & Rescue responded to a beacon activation with the aid of a local helicopter partner, to extract a tramper from Albert Burn. They had successfully relocated their kneecap in the back country and waited until first light to set off their beacon and get lifted out. You are one tough cookie! Later in the day Police and Fire (FENZ) attended to the large plumes of thick smoke on Maxwell Road that you might have seen out behind town. It was established that it was a controlled burn on farmland. FENZ are investigating whether permits were in force or not. In the evening Police spoke to some friendly travellers out past Glendhu Bay who looked like they were freedom camping. They were enjoying a stunning sunset by the water, good job. Saturday night was a big demand for Police with party-goers losing the ability to stay in control for the closing night of Mint Bar. As a result, there were assaults and other disorders in and around town, culminating in arrests. It appeared the night was not yet done when an intoxicated driver crashed into a pedestrian crossing. When day shift started on Sunday morning, the officers from the previous night were still working… There was more to be had however, with two separate Search & Rescue beacon activations from the Siberia Valley and Dingle Burn. Here’s to a new week.
