Wanaka Backyard Trapping (WBT) wants everyone trapping predators in the Upper Clutha‘s “Backyard” to record their successes online and is holding a workshop to show them how to do that. “It’s really important for people to record their data so we can see what predators are out there and how many are being caught,” said WBT chair Kris Vollebregt. “Recording their catches is a great incentive for people to keep trapping. A trap is only as good as the person who keeps checking and resetting it”. “Our aim is to increase numbers of native birds and lizards in the Upper Clutha and the best way to do that is through trapping of predators – rats, stoats, ferrets, hedgehogs and possums.” The WBT workshop will be held on Saturday August 31 at the Wanaka Primary School Gym (9.30am – noon). Markus Hermanns will be there with a computer to show people how to use the trapping
website Trap.NZ which already has records of over a million predators trapped all over the country. The workshop also includes the opportunity for people to make their own rat trap tunnels, and to learn about predator trapping in the Upper Clutha.

WBT’s aim is for one in five households in the area to have a predator trap in the backyard. The group also supports groups with trap lines on public land and has funded lines along the Lake Hawea foreshore and around the Albert Town Lagoon. It is also involved in plans for trap lines along the Hawea River track and Luggate Creek, and around Penrith Wetland and over Mt Iron. Anyone wishing to be involved or interested in setting up a trapline can get help from Wanaka Backyard Trapping.
