Our Annual Exhibition will be opening on 6 January from 5.00 – 9.00pm with wine and nibbles. All are welcome to attend!

The exhibition continues over the weekend at The Hub, 34 McDougal Street and we would love to meet you there anytime between 10.00am – 4.00pm on Saturday, 10.00am – 2.00pm on Sunday to share in our joy of creating art. Plenty of parking available. Our small group of talented artists began over 40 years ago and is still going strong.

"Our artists are so diverse" says Christine Hatcher, the spokesperson for the group. "Some work in oils or acrylics, watercolours, pastels, coloured pencils and printmaking. The group provides support, inspiration, ideas, techniques and also, most importantly friendship. We meet weekly and work at the Wanaka Arts Centre and as the weather improves, we head outside to do some plainair in this beautiful town of ours."

This fundraiser is to enable us to keep going as strongly as ever. We look forward to welcoming you in January.

Rotary Club of Wānaka New Year book sale

The Rotary Club of Wānaka book sale has thousands of books.

The Rotary Club of Wānaka’s New Year Book Sale will take place over three days in January (January 10-12).

The annual book sale has traditionally attracted hundreds of people to the Lake Wānaka Centre in search of a great read at a bargain price.

Rotary Club of Wānaka president Mike Elliot said the Club has a stockpile of books which were collected earlier in the year.

“We have thousands of books which will be for sale next week,” Mike said.

The books have been categorised to make browsing easy and the majority of books are priced at two dollars.

Some newer books and special interest books are a little more expensive.

“It’s a big job to categorise and price but well worth it when we see the response and the funds we can raise for the community,” Mike said.

This year the Rotary club has teamed up with the Hāwea Flat School to manage the book sale, and all proceeds raised will go to the school to help them support their activities in 2023.

When you next drive through and enjoy the magni cent sweep of tall tussock over the rhythm of spur and gully, do send a thought to the group. Without their e ort, the Pass landscape would be riddled with brier like the country to the north and south of it; and patched with dreaded lupin, an escaped garden plant that smothers native owers and splashes the tawny landscape with hard colour. Broom, wilding pines and Hieracium are also in the group’s sights.

The book sale will take place at the Lake Wānaka Centre from Tuesday, 10 January, to Thursday, 12 January. Open from 10.00am –4.00pm each day.

Sheep grazing on the tall tussocklands is seen by some as the way to control the High Country scourge of grey mats of Hieracium daisy. But in the Scenic Reserve, seedling snow tussocks and grasses are now growing through it. If left to thrive they will shade it out.

Wānaka New Year’s Eve Celebrations

Libraries are open at Level 2 and we are enjoying seeing our community back! It’s fantastic to see the books going out the door as our patrons re-stock their reading piles.

We also have some handy initiatives to keep kids and adults alike entertained during Level 2: Book Bundles, Pre-Schooler Craft Packs and My Book Bag.

Our Book Bundles are the perfect grab and go, specially put together by our expert sta . We have Themed Fiction Book Bundles for adults o ering choices such as Cosy Crime, Adventure, Killer Thillers, Women’s Medley and more. Children’s Book Bundles include themes such as Bears, Dinosaurs and Choose your own Adventure.

This is nature’s slow way of resetting a balance. To assist nature, seed is collected each summer and young snow tussocks grown up to plant back into the Reserve each autumn as “islands” in the bared areas.

More volunteers are urgently needed to carry on the work of the group. A workday is held each month on a weekend, weather permitting. Gear is provided and rides are available.

After a year hiatus the big New Year celebration is back at Wānaka’s lakefront.

The event will kick o with family-friendly entertainment from 2.00pm followed by live music and of course, spectacular reworks displays at midnight.

At midnight an awesome reworks display will be put on lighting up the night sky and welcoming the New Year in style!

From 2.00pm to 4.30pm there will be family fun at the Dinosaur Park, which includes face painting, roaming entertainers and games.

My Book Bag is a hand-picked selection of ten books, just let us know your tastes and we will personally curate a bag for you. We also have a delivery service for My Book Bag to community members with mobility, transport or health problems which make getting to the library di cult.
