The Wanaka Ski and Snowsports Club is turning 40. Come and celebrate with us at The Lake Wanaka Centre on 15 June at 7.00pm. Put on your retro party gear to jive to live music by Cemetery Road. Have a welcome drink to start your evening off, after which there is a cash bar and it’s R18 for alcohol. Food will be available during the evening. A silent auction will be running with great items worth bidding for. Captivating footage will be shown on a big screen and watch carefully, you may even catch yourself in the lineup. A photographer will be at the entrance foyer to capture your retro look. The club was formed on an Easter Sunday in 1979, when a group of keen snow buffs decided they needed a club in order to get cheaper skiing! But they also wanted
to sell gear, hold fitness classes, races and of course social events. Led by Peter King, the committee comprised Heather Ronald, Gregor Ronald, Joy Gawn, Allan Gillespie, Steve Scurr and Ken Burke.

Over the past 40 years, the club has supported the winter athletes by fundraising and events. Races have been held at Cardrona, Treble Cone and Snow Farm to encourage participation. Originally set up for skiing only, the club now incorporates all snow activities such as freeskiing and snowboarding. Social events for adult members have always been an important aspect of the club. Tickets for the party are $35 and are on sale at Outside Sports, Racers Edge and Snow Sports or by contacting info@wanakasnowsports.co.nz

When Ashley Hopkins, the orchestra’s musical director was considering its winter series programme, he envisaged a focus on our younger members, as well as the young at heart! The result is a delightful combination of music for children, particularly in the first half of the concert, which includes the Collected Themes from the Harry Potter movies with audiovisual effects and the wellloved “Ferdinand The Bull”. The final piece in the first half is “Perky the Pukeko”, written by Michelle Osment with music by Cathy Irons. All the sections of the
orchestra are featured in quirky snippets and in a guest performance as narrator, the Mayor of Central Otago, Tim Cadogan lends his story- telling skills to provide entertainment that will be enjoyed by young and old.

In the second half of the concert, Cathy Irons will perform the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2. Wieniawski was a Polish composer recognised early in life as a violin prodigy, attending the Paris Conservatoire at the age of 9. His second violin concerto is the most commonly played and is technically very demanding for the soloist. The Cow Wanaka is running a Fundraising Spaghetti Eating Competition on behalf of the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade over the next couple of weeks. We are running four heats in total, two have already taken place with the remaining two happening on Wednesday 29 May and Sunday 2 June. We are inviting everyone to take part along with as many people as possible to support the competitors. The winner of each heat will receive a voucher from the Cow and a
ticket into the final and second place will receive a Cow t-shirt for giving it a good shot. The final will take place on Friday 7 June at 5.30pm and the winner will receive a mystery prize. Our aim is to raise as much money as possible to be presented to the Wanaka Volunteer Fire Brigade as we believe they do an amazing job of keeping our community safe, and want to help them continue doing the work they are doing. Have your say on our district’s arts and culture scene Written by: Celia Crosbie Wanaka residents are invited to have a say in the future of a cultural plan for the entire district at a public dropin session tonight (Wednesday May 29). The recently-formed Three Lakes Cultural Trust is holding the ‘Community Voice’ meetings in Queenstown, Glenorchy, Wanaka and Arrowtown. All feedback will help shape the district’s first independent Cultural Masterplan, which has been commissioned by the Trust and is expected to be released publicly in September. Established earlier this year to support and encourage arts and culture in the Queenstown Lakes District, the Trust will help facilitate the growth of the dynamic local scene by supporting exciting infrastructure ideas and initiatives, in turn promoting a greater enthusiasm for arts and culture.
Global cultural consultancy firm, AEA Consulting, will lead the Community Voice sessions, with AEA consultants reporting on work undertaken so far and sharing results from an online public survey that has been recently circulated. Wanaka’s Community Voice session is at the Lake Wanaka Centre tonight, starting at 6.30pm. Trust chair, Bill Moran, says feedback from the wider community is essential in forming a well-rounded strategy that reflects the needs of everyone. “This is a major milestone for our district, and the first real opportunity people have had to be part of a wider conversation about the arts and culture in our area. The input from residents will help us develop an arts and cultural strategy for the entire district that is responsive to our communities, so it’s really important that people attend.”

Here is a rundown of what I can tell you occurred in Wanaka this past week. Needlessly, someone smashed the rear window of one of the Plunket vehicles over the weekend. This vehicle was parked in the carpark at the rear of their Ardmore St building. A male was arrested after he was caught shoplifting from New World. Caution needs to be taken when buying goods online from the likes of Facebook marketplace or other group pages. We received a complaint from an individual that was scammed through Facebook this week. Too often people are paying for goods and not receiving the items they paid for. Don’t get ripped off and always look into the user profile of the person who is selling the item. A red flag could be a profile that has only been created recently. Three males have been charged with varying assault charges in relation to a violent altercation that occurred the week prior outside a local bar in Wanaka. A male was knocked unconscious for several minutes after he was punched and had his head stomped on several times during the incident. A crash was attended on the Wanaka-Luggate Highway where a driver failed to give way to another vehicle resulting in a crash. A passenger in the vehicle suffered a broken wrist and chest injuries. The driver at fault has been charged with driving carelessly resulting in a person being injured. This week Police made another concerted effort into apprehending drink drivers. I am disappointed but not surprised that they caught six drivers over the legal alcohol limit, and one under the influence of drugs. This is an exact repeat of the numbers we got last week. It would be great to see these numbers declining for the sake of everyone’s safety on our roads. A female was arrested for possession of cannabis. It is not legal in New Zealand, so it is definitely on our radar. Several items of property have been handed in to us this week. One is a small silver bangle with an inscription on it. This looks like a sentimental piece and would be great to reunite it with its rightful owner. A large metal ramp was picked up after it fell of the back of a red truck/trailer unit. Also a Dewalt cordless skill-saw came off the back of another vehicle. It has the owner’s surname on it. There is a pile of lost keys that keeps growing by the day at the station.
