The Alpine Community Development Trust has initiated a research project to look at the needs of older people in the Upper Clutha Community. A survey of up to 80 people, over the age of 65 is being undertaken with the support of Sarah Ballard and Helen Millar. The participants will be asked their views and opinions about services and whether or not there are gaps and shortcomings that they may have experienced. A pilot scheme of 10 people has already been trialled. The

survey has been developed and will be overseen by Professor Amanda Barusch, who is presently employed at Otago University, Department of Social Work and Community Development. Crime Line By Constable Ingrid Glendining It appears that winter has arrived on Sunday night in Wanaka and Lake Hawea! Snow on the mountain tops and the icy breeze picking up means it must be time to start getting out the warm winter woollies again! Just a few incidents to report this week; On Thursday the 27th April, graffiti was discovered in the toilets near the dinosaur playground. There was a minor car crash on State Highway 6 on Saturday. The driver was looking at the view and has left the road and driven into a bush. In the early hours of Sunday morning a 61 year old local man was arrested and returned to the Wanaka police station for detoxification, due to his extreme state of drunkenness. A suspicious vehicle was seen driving around Eely Point on Sunday afternoon. Described as an older style, silvery light brown vehicle driven by a female with a female passenger. The females offered two young girls candy, and then asked if they wanted to get in. If you remember seeing this car on Sunday could you give us a call at the Wanaka police station on 443 7272. Please note that the Wanaka police station is open on weekends, so don't hesitate to give us a call or come in should you need our assistance on a Saturday or Sunday. A few bikes have been pinched this week and all from within garages. Make sure you lock your garage or shed overnight and during the day, as some opportunistic thief is taking advantage of your trusting nature. Road signs have also been pinched this week. By pinching a road sign you have created the potential for an accident to occur on the road. You have also committed theft. You might think they look cool in your flat, however, if you are caught with road signs - including road cones, then you will be arrested and charged with theft. Road signs are there for everybody's safety so leave them where they are. This weekend is the start of duck shooting which is traditionally a significant event on the rural calendar. Please exercise the utmost care if you are going to be involved. Some extra Police will be working in rural areas this weekend. Enjoy the rest of your week and take care.
