The Bike Wānaka Hikuwai Four Hour is on this Saturday, 3 July. The multi-lapped mountain bike race winds its way through the Hikuwai Loop near Albert Town. With the Le Mans style start from the Outlet Camp Wānaka, riders run to their bikes, race toward the lake then back along the ridge above the Clutha. The course takes riders of all abilities over three bridges, then through the densely covered trail to the top of the loop at Norm’s Rest. It’s then a fast, fun descent toward Albert Town and through some of the lesser-known trail gems.

Weather permitting, the course rolls down Rockabilly Gulch and then more fast single track back to Norm’s Rest, where riders once again have spectacular views of the Clutha River. Then a flowing traverse through the forest and kanuka to the Outlet Camp Wānaka.

If you’re thinking about racing Dean’s Bank 10 Hour in October, the shorter Four Hour is a great opportunity for riders from around the region to continue or begin developing their fitness through the shorter days of winter. The event is open to both solo riders (aged 18+) and teams (riders to be aged 10+). The Club would like to thank the Outlet Camp Wānaka and the many local businesses supporting the inaugural event. Special thanks to all of the volunteers that have dedicated their time maintaining and ‘tickling up’ the trails for everyone to enjoy. Proceeds f ro m th e r a c e w i ll be us e d fo r maintaining trails and cycling advocacy. If you’re interested in other Bike Wānaka initiatives, check out the recently developed trails at Kirimoko and the Hawea Bike Park. For more information about the race, the Club’s frost management plan, or to register, please visit www.bikewanaka.org.nz/events Look forward to seeing you there.
