This special concert will pay tribute to the artistic insight of original trumpeter Miles Davis. Featuring arrangements by Gil Evans and compositions by Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis and Miles Davis himself, the 'Birth of the Cool' recordings represent an interesting moment in the history of jazz, in which a number of superstars from the 1940s and 50s collaborated to produce arrangements that paired the angular melodies of Bebop, with the thicker textures of Big Band Jazz.

Hello all, hope you have all had a fantastic week in the sun. Here is what the boys and girls in blue have been doing this week. Earlier in the week a vehicle was broken into on a residential street. Several building items were taken. Police have a strong line of enquiry on this one. On Wednesday a local resident was arrested for breaching a court order and spent a night with Police in Queenstown before appearing in court. Several alcohol checkpoints were set up on our roads during the week. Without fail, these checkpoints resulted in catching drivers over the limit, whatever day of the week it is. Remember if you drink and drive, it’s a matter of time before you meet us. A vehicle was impounded after a disqualified driver was caught driving. On top of their charge for excess breath alcohol they will face a further charge in court. They will be hitch hiking up the hill for the remainder of the season. Police attended a single vehicle crash on the corner of Gunn Road and Alison Avenue. On Police arrival the scene had all signs of a fatal. Likely due to grossly excessive speed along that stretch of road. However, the driver walked out largely unscathed. The driver will be summoned to court for careless driving and will have a bill to pay back for the Police responded to a firearm incident in Hawea. It turned out to be a father and son doing some target shooting with an airgun. Advice and education was given. Please be converse with the cardinal rules with firearms even if it is Police responded to threatening behaviour at a hotel over the weekend. This occurred after several occupants were making a bit too much noise for the other guests. The town had plenty of visitors for the ‘Doof doof’ concert at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday night. In general, all were well behaved. If you are having a few drinks at home before coming into town, please don’t bring ‘one for the road’. First issue is you come into a liquor ban area, second issue, many are too lazy to find a bin for their empties. It’s not always, for some it’s very challenging. For Upper Clutha mums, peer support is available and Wanaka Well, led by Central Lakes Breastfeeding Charitable Trust, meets twice monthly. Women can meet other mums, get breastfeeding advice and specialist support over a cuppa and a chat. Many women tell us they don’t know how they would have survived those early weeks without the extra skills and knowledge that our Lactation Consultants offer families in their own home, according to CLBC Trust Chair Jo TheO’Connor.Edgewater event is our way to give back so that more families can benefit says Peer Supporter, Ebony Marsh. This free service is only available through the generosity of local funders like Central Lakes Trust and through fundraising efforts. Edgewater have donated their venue, and we have received some wonderful donations of prizes from local businesses, but we’d welcome more, says Ebony.
