re you interested in tracing your Family History but aren’t sure how to go about it? Have you made a start but hit that “ Brickwall”? Let us help you!

August is Family History Month and to raise the awareness of our Wanaka Genealogy Group we are holding an Information Day in Wanaka Library on Wednesday 3rd August from 10am – 5pm. One of our aims is “ ...to help and encourage one another in research”.

There will be members of the group on hand throughout the day to answer questions and tell you a little bit about what we do.

We have been busy creating a display which will remain in the Library for the whole of August.

We are a friendly, informal bunch, so come along and have a chat. Can’t make it on the 3rd? You are welcome to come to one of our general meetings in Wanaka Library. We meet on the last Wednesday of each month at the new time of 5.15pm -7.15pm.

Well Wanaka, there has been a bit happening here in paradise over the last week.

Theft; we had four separate incidents reported, items stolen from bars, shops and around town. Yet another reminder to all to keep your bags, jackets, cameras etc on your person at all times. Under a table or in a pile on the floor in a bar is not under your control. Don't leave things in places where they are going to be stolen. We need to make the idiot thieves lives harder, not easier.

Crashes; yes we are still crashing our cars. Police attended a number of crashes in the last week, in many cases ice was a factor. A vehicle pulled out of the new Medical Centre and knocked a cyclist off their bike. This is a new intersection so please take care when you are leaving, after you have been to see the Doc. Lastly, we attended an accident where a car had left the road and the driver received nasty injuries. The driver didn't have a drivers licence.

In three separate incidents five people were dealt with, for possession of cannabis.

Police attended another family violence incident this week where an argument escalated and got out of hand.

Family violence is an issue for the whole community.

You may have seen the helicopter flying around Mt Roy on Sunday night. A young Australian man went for a day walk that turned on him. A wrong turn at the top and the sun going down earlier than he thought got him into a bit of trouble. Having a cell phone, using it and then doing as he was told, helped with the rescue and a good outcome.

Two people were spoken to about racing their cars on Cardrona Valley Road.

Wanaka Primary School reported $200.00 worth of damage caused by the removal of 8 anti skate board devices.
