FOUR-HANDS

Wanaka Concert Society presents the four-hands piano sensation Duo Enharmonics in partnership with Chamber Music New Zealand. Nicole Chao and Beth Chen bring their exhilarating piano duet programme to the Lake Wanaka Centre, 10 October at 7.30pm.
Combining dazzling virtuosity and romantic lyricism, Duo Enharmonics will deliver their unique musical experience on their New Zealand tour.
The engaging pair will share their expressive sense of musicianship through some cornerstone works. Mozart’s showy Sonata in D major, originally performed by nine-year-old Wolfgang with his sister Nannerl, remains as fresh today as it was in 1772.
Mendelssohn’s Andante & Allegro Brillante duet written for his friend Clara Schumann will also highlight Nicole and Beth’s technical mastery. Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, a highly percussive piece, also suits the dynamic duo to a tee. Duo Enharmonics’ programme is also
complemented by rhythmic contemporary pieces such as John Psathas’ Motet, and Turkish composer’s Fazil Say’s Night.
New Zealand Taiwanese Nicole Chao completed her Master of Music in Piano Performance with distinction at the New Zealand School of Music -Te Kōkī. Nicole is a laureate of numerous distinctions, in Australia and New Zealand.
Beth Chen is a Taiwan-born New Zealand pianist with a performing career spanning from Aotearoa to Europe. A recipient of several awards, Beth's studies took her from Wellington to Europe where she performed extensively while based in Germany and London.

Wanaka Lakes Health Centre Cardrona ValleyKia ora tatou,
Here is the weekly wash up of what’s been happening in Wanaka.
On Monday we were out and about breath testing drivers. No surprises, but even on a Monday someone is off to explain themselves to the Judge. Drugs were also located at a local backpackers.
Tuesday popped around and a customer at BP became angry at staff for taking too long to make his coffee, he was trespassed.
Some suspicious activity took place where a male was located on a contractor’s water tank at the works taking place on Plantation Road.
On hump day Wednesday, a car and cyclist crashed on Kings Drive near Farrant Drive. Fortunately, no one was injured. Later that evening there was another car crash. This time at Dungarvon and Warren Streets. Luckily again, as like earlier in the day no one was injured. Some stock broke free on the Crown Range but were quickly rounded up.
When Thursday presented, so did a theft matter from a local bar/ bottle shop. Someone thought they could help themselves to some alcohol without paying. Police are on to the person responsible. Someone popped into the station to confess to hitting a parked car a few weeks ago. Roadworkers reported high speeds through road works around Wanaka. Please reduce your speed to the posted speed limit. Thursday wouldn’t be complete without a car crash. When someone parked at the Mediterranean Market they forgot to put on their handbrake and their car rolled backwards and crashed into two other vehicles. A dirt bike was reported to be racing around the
Friday turned up and another crash. This time in the early hours of the morning on Riverbank Road. This resulted in the car involved catching fire and the driver decamping. The driver presented themselves to Wanaka Police Station some hours later. Police attended a threat of self-harm. Rest assured that support was put in place for the person and there is help out there if you or anyone else is in that situation. Later on Friday, wilful damage was reported at the Night 'n Day store. On Saturday Police attended a crash on the Crown Range. The driver didn’t hang around to speak with Police. Later in the day some of the team played a game of football against some local 11 to 15 year old boys and girls as part of a fundraising opportunity for the players who will be attending an academy in Wellington training at the Ole Football Academy. Some of the young players showed great skill and kept the Officers on their toes as they tried to keep up. The final score was 5 to 2 to the Ole Football Academy team.
Sunday appeared out of nowhere and so did the alcohol fuelled behaviour. Police were kept busy with heavily intoxicated people wearing dress up roaming the streets and attending parties. A number of people were dealt with for breaching the local liquor ban area. A male was dealt with for urinating in public opposite the Water Bar. Police attended several disorder type incidents involving the heavily intoxicated people wearing dress up. When spoken to the heavily intoxicated people wearing dress up stated they had come from Treble Cone Ski Field. Keep safe Wanaka.
Two Mount Aspiring College students will be heading back to school during the upcoming holidays, thanks to the inaugural Upper Clutha Community Arts Senior Students Scholarship.
Hana Dean (Year 13) and Hazel Murray (Year 12) have received funding from the Upper Clutha Community Arts Council (UCCAC) to attend David Ryan’s Process of Painting course at the Wānaka Spring Arts School, which will run from October 10 to 14 at the College.
The Council has offered grants for students and adults for many years, but this is a new, more specific scholarship. According to UCCAC Chair, Janet Malloch, it’s aimed at giving senior high school students ‘with an obvious interest and background in the arts to experience
professional teaching in their particular field of interest.’ The scholarship includes course fees and appropriate materials to the value of $500.
Janet said that both Hana and Hazel “demonstrated a very strong interest in their particular fields in their applications, with a very great interest in pursuing tertiary education in their chosen art.” Hazel, who has painted most of her life, said she is looking forward to spending a full week focussing on art. “It will be great to get some more technical skills in painting,” Hazel said.
The Wānaka Autumn Arts School is usually held in April, but this year’s school, the 32nd run by the UCCAC, was postponed until October due to Covid uncertainty and rebranded as the Spring Arts School.
The Lake Hawea Community Centre is proud to present another fabulous Arts on Tour production. A new solo play with Helen Moulder and directed by Sue Rider the collaboration that brought us Playing Miss Havisham and Gloria’s Handbag.
A family, food and five surprising characters! Olivia Paterson runs a big meat exporting company and wants to feed the world. Her daughter is a vegan. Her father wants things to stay as they are. And her sister is not sure what she wants. Only the mysterious Grace seems certain.

Over 500 older people across Otago live in one of Presbyterian Support Otago’s nine Enliven care homes. Our two Wanaka care homes, Aspiring Enliven and Elmslie House now urgently need more staff. Through the Covid pandemic, our teams have strived to continue to provide a high level of support and care for our residents while ensuring the safety of the residents, visitors, and our team.
While New Zealand is now coming out the other side of the pandemic, staff shortages in aged care and hospitality mean the stress is growing for our understaffed care homes. It takes around
1400 staff including registered nurses, care workers, activities coordinators, cooks, kitchen staff, housekeepers, clinical leadership, and volunteers to support and care for all our Enliven residents.
Like many other providers of aged care, we have had to temporarily close beds in some locations so we can continue to provide the quality of care we aim for, but further closures are not sustainable for our residents, their families or Enliven.
Please consider coming to work with us so we can continue to provide this vital service.
We urgently need people to fill casual, part-time or full-time Registered Nurse, Care Worker, Housekeeper and Kitchen roles. Even if you can spare a few hours a week, we would love to hear from you. View all our vacancies online at www.psotago.org.nz/jobs.

I can’t recommend Nicki highly enough even though I have not met her in person. As a family selling a property from a distance we spoke by phone with a few Wanaka-based sales people before settling on Nicki as our preferred agent. She sounded like a straight talker who knew her stuff and that’s what she turned out to be. It only took Nicki two weeks to sell our property (with multiple offers) she was always at the end of the phone to discuss anything and everything whenever we needed her. She didn’t feed us jargon and she presented the property beautifully for us. If you’re looking for an agent you can really trust then absolutely go with Nicki.
