Upper Clutha Messenger - 7 December 2022

On 8th December, our community will get the chance to learn about a local project focused on Kārearea (NZ Falcon). Kārearea are NZ’s only endemic raptor species and can fly at speeds of over 100 km/h, bringing down prey larger than themselves.

The Cardrona Kārearea Project is in its fourth year of collecting data to guide conservation efforts of the local Kārearea population. Working closely with the community, especially farmers in the Cardrona Valley, much has been learnt already by the team. Community participation is an integral part of the project and people are encouraged to report Kārearea sightings and help to find breeding pairs of the birds in the wider Wānaka region. Threats to Kārearea include mammalian predators, human interference, nesting disturbance, non-

target poisoning, plus vehicle and window strike. The threat classification of the Eastern Kārearea has recently been raised to “Nationally Vulnerable”, a worse risk category, by the Department of Conservation.

The Project aims to inform conservation of Kārearea through long term, scientific research. This is done by identifying nesting pairs, monitoring nests and estimating survival rates. This helps with understanding the birds and identifying the key management actions needed to improve their conservation status.

Nga mihi nui, greetings to all. Here is the weekly round up of what’s been happening in your community.

There were many a roadside checkpoint over the week in random spots around Wanaka. A number of you were over the limit and either received an infringement notice or are off to Court to explain your actions to a Judge. There is no excuse for drinking and driving. We will be out there at any time and in any place. Please look after each other, our community and make good decisions and plan ahead.

Also detected at these checkpoints or other traffic stops were a number of youth driving in breach of their driver licence conditions. Please refresh yourself or your child’s understanding of the conditions of their driver licence. A number of infringement notices were also issued for cell phone use, no seatbelt and not stopping at stop signs.

A timely reminder to businesses to be vigilant coming up to Christmas. Unfortunately, theft from shops – shop lifting, is on the rise at this time of the year.

Police received a number of traffic complaints about motorists out and about on our roads. Please drive within your lane, be prudent and drive to the conditions, if traffic is building up behind you, please be courteous, pull over and allow other motorists past. This leads on to a number of vehicle crashes in the Wanaka area during the week. Most of these crashes were avoidable by following the road rules. As you are all aware the volume of vehicles in Wanaka and surrounding area has increased. Please be patient and drive to the conditions.

Tragically one of these crashes resulted in a fatality on the Crown Range Road south of Cardrona involving a Wanaka resident. The investigation is ongoing but it is a sad reminder of the dangers of

Police were called to a number of incidents involving threats and violence at a local campground throughout the week. Unfortunately, stupidity reigned supreme and now some camp goers find themselves banned from the campsite and having to visit Court and explain their actions to a Judge.

A motorcyclist decided they would rather flee from Police than receive a speeding ticket. Unfortunately for the motorcyclist, their decision to flee came to a crashing end after travelling at ludicrous speed. He has a date with the judge. If you witnessed this event on Ballantyne Road on Friday afternoon, please contact Wanaka

A friendly reminder to all of our cyclists here in Wanaka and our friends visiting that you must wear a cycle helmet whilst riding your bike. Hanging your helmet from the handlebars doesn’t cut the mustard. If you are spotted not wearing your helmet, you can expect a $55 infringement notice. Wearing a cycle helmet has January 1994.

The Wanaka Medical Social Triathlon is back

The Wanaka Medical Social Triathlon will once again be kicking off the Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Festival on Sunday, 12 February 2023. This noncompetitive event is a fun way of getting out and about and enjoying the beautiful surroundings of Wanaka.

The event consists of a 15 minute pool swim or 30 minutes Aquarobics or 30 minute Pilates at the Wanaka Recreation Centre, followed by a coffee or tea. Participants will then jump on their bikes for a 17km cycle from the Recreation Centre, along the Mount Iron track to Albert Town and then joining the Outlet Track along the lakefront to the Watersports Facility. The final challenge is a 2.5km walk

along the Waterfall Creek track and back, totalling 5km. This will be followed by lunch which is included in the price!

The event is open to anyone over the age of 18. People can ride any type of bike, including e-bikes.

Entry is just $25 which includes a Keep Cup, a reusable drink bottle, coffee or tea, lunch, pool entry and refreshments at the finish of the event.

It really is a fantastic day out!

Join the fun at Hāwea

On Sunday, 11 December between 4.00 and 8.00pm at Peter Fraser Park, the Hawea Community are coming together for a Christmas celebration. Hopefully the weather will be kind!

There will be plenty to enjoy - with carols, entertainment, the ukulele band, dancing, a Christmas hamper raffle, and of course a visit from Santa. ‘Menlove Berries’ and the ‘Lions Food Truck’ will have goodies for sale, but you are welcome to bring your own picnic food and liquid refreshments. Get the kids to bring their togs as, weather permitting, we will have the

slippery slide going along with other entertainment.

It would be great to see as many of our Hāwea people and friends, young and old, come along to have fun, catch up with mates and generally have a good time. See you there!
