The Family Works Buddy Programme contributes to the emotional and social wellbeing of children by matching them with carefully selected and trained adult volunteers in a well-supported mentoring relationship. The programme matches children aged 5-11 years with couples or individuals who share similar interests and experiences to have fun together on a weekly/ fortnightly basis through zero (or low) cost activities. The programme has been successfully operating in Otago for over 30 years and is focused on enhancing children's lives with friendship, fun, encouragement and positive attitudes/experiences. Adult Buddy volunteers are quick to express the importance of the programme, and the difference it makes within a young person’s life.

Adult Buddies are all ages and have a range of interests and experiences to share.

Prospective Buddy volunteers attend an initial training course which covers topics such as communication skills, guidelines and how to build a relationship with the Young Buddy. Ongoing support and supervision are given to all Adult Buddies.

The Buddy Programme is run throughout Otago, including Alexandra and Cromwell, Wanaka and Hawea.

Dear valued customers

A big THANK YOU to our SAR partners at Wanaka Search & Rescue.

They have had a very busy few weeks with callouts each week since the beginning of January.

This week the team recovered an injured person from the Siberia Valley on Friday, followed by assisting two overdue trampers in the Wilkin Valley.

On Sunday two climbers got into di culty on Mt French and required rescue in inclement weather. Both were airlifted out, one with minor injuries.

This was a very challenging rescue due to the extreme terrain and weather conditions at the time.

Many thanks to all involved in these operations, as we could not do it without their ongoing support.

‘Hanna’

The Lake Hawea Community Centre is proud to present another fabulous Arts on Tour production. Jennifer Ward-Lealand directs Cassandra Woodhouse in the acclaimed one woman play, ‘Hanna’ by Sam Potter. Being a young mum is supposed to be hard - but for Hanna, the only thing she’s ever been brilliant at is raising her beloved daughter, Ellie. But then a DNA test reveals staggering news: Ellie is not Hanna’s child - and now her ‘real’ parents want to meet.

This funny, heartfelt and compelling one-woman play, delicately weaves in questions of racial identity, economic privilege, and the lottery of birth - and asks: what does “family” actually mean in today’s society?

Arts on Tour are heavily funded by Creative New Zealand which allows them to bring these wonderful shows to heartland Aotearoa. Revenue made from ticket sales is able to be kept by the Hawea Community Centre to assist with general running and compliance costs.

Tākaro Upper Clutha

The festival of Sport, Active Recreation and Play is back! With a new name, new format and time slot.

Tākaro means play in Te Reo and that’s what we want to do between March 21 and 25, 2023. The format is easy for clubs and the public. Clubs and groups will be o ering three options to the public, “Take a Look”, “Have a Go” or “Get Involved”. Clubs will open their regular trainings up to the public to come along and “Take a Look” and see if this is the club and sport for you. The “Have a Go” options means clubs and groups invite you to participate

Putting out the call for trail-riding volunteers

One of the South Island’s top trail rides is back for 2023 and organisers are looking for more keen volunteers to join the crew.

After Covid restrictions cancelled Wānaka Trail Ride in 2022, Track Manager Phil Pendlebury is expecting a bumper turnout this year. And according to Pendlebury, a big event requires a big team.

“All up, we’ll have around 40 marshals on the day,” Phil says. “Anyone who is a keen trail rider and wants to be part of a fantastic experience should get in touch.”

Wānaka Trail Ride is an entirely volunteer-run event, and the marshalling team plays a crucial role in maintaining the high levels of safety and fun the ride is known for.

“Roles cover everything from marshalling the pee wee track to working the communications tent in the base paddock to setting up trails before the event. Some of these top trails are for expert riders only.”

This year’s event marks the seventh Wānaka Trail Ride, which has now raised over $140,000 for Wānaka Primary School, Montessori Children’s House Wānaka, Tarras School and the RSA Appeal.
