No need to wait for title or consents before you start building, because on the weekend of 14 and 15 November, the Lake Hawea Community Centre is hosting a ‘Brick Show'.

The show is the brainchild of Ben Pell from Hawea Flat. It has been created to give the community an opportunity to see some of the great designs from the Lego users group and give local children and schools a chance to be involved by producing their own creations with prizes at stake for the best and most inventive!
No kit sets will be allowed for the competition, however there will also be an opportunity for anyone who wishes to display their own kit sets. The show has been put together by Ben and the Hawea Community Centre committee, with further support from the Lego users group of Dunedin. The Lake Hawea Community Association and Lake Hawea Community Centre have generously agreed to donate some of the prizes. For more information go to the facebook page of the Lake Hawea Community Centre. All proceeds will go to the local community.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Planting in the Lindis Next time you drive through the Lindis Pass Scenic Reserve, pause to admire the clean sweep of open tussock mantling the rhythm of spurs and gullies. This outstanding landscape reflects the hard work of the Lindis Pass Conservation Group (LPCG). For 15 years, members have worked voluntarily to rid the Reserve of sweet brier, Russell lupin and Scotch broom. Without this conservation effort, these species would be spread through the Reserve from one end to the other, and from the highway up to the ridge crests. LPCG has also embarked on two tall tussock re-planting projects to promote faster recovery of the tussock cover in very depleted areas, where a long history of repeated burning and grazing prior to 1976 has resulted in loss of cover and allowed hieracium and browntop to move in and establish. Tussock seed is
written by Anne Steven collected every year and given to the Otago Polytechnic (Cromwell) to propagate into 2 year plants to replant in the reserve, funded by DOC and ECAN. The Group is about to start its annual programme of conservation work up in the Reserve and are very keen for new volunteers to help. Workdays are once a month on a weekend, starting on 26 September, weather permitting. All equipment is provided and transport is available (governed by COVID-19 rules). It’s a great day out in a magical landscape, with many native plants, insects and lizards to observe and learn about. A second session will be held for secondary school children from 5.15-5.45pm, parents are also welcome.
Many participants wore fancy dress last year and this added to the relaxed family friendly atmosphere. The fire brigade will be in attendance to give everyone a light spray as they head off. This helps the colour stick and creates an even better rainbow effect.

The bright nights are here and we all will have a little longer in the evening to enjoy the outdoors. With the forecasted weather we need to be aware to drive to the conditions. For the local sports fans it has been great news that The Shield has been won and it is heading back down south. Monday morning saw Police deal with a disturbance at a Cardrona Road address, that led to a male being detained due to his degree of intoxication. Police also received a report of a male loitering on the deck of an address at Kereru Crescent, apparently intoxicated. Police also apprehended a motorist for excess breath alcohol. Tuesday saw Police deal with damage to the signage at New World Supermarket, Dungarvon Street, and deal with a motorist who became confused and drove on the wrong side of the roadway. Later in the day Police apprehended another motorist for excess breath alcohol. Wednesday saw Police deal with three minor vehicle collisions, driver inattention was a factor. Thursday Police received a report of the theft of a jacket at Woody’s Bar, if you have taken the wrong one by mistake, return it please. Police also received a report of a sheep shot through the eye on Kane Road during the early hours of the morning. If you have been shooting in this area, please clearly identify your targets and gain the owner’s permission before shooting on any land. Friday night saw Police deal with two males who had become extremely intoxicated at our bars, they had to be removed and returned to their owners! Level 1 meant our bars were busy and we were able to enjoy this greater freedom. Please drink responsibly so you can keep yourself safe, and let us keep our community at level 1. Saturday saw Police apprehend another motorist for excess breath alcohol. Police also dealt with a motorist who crashed his vehicle on Riverbank Road, it is wise if such an incident occurs to make contact with the Police, so that they are not searching for you. The same also applies to those of you getting out on the lake - on Saturday a full Search & Rescue response was initiated after a sailor capsized his catamaran. After swimming to shore, driving home and then returning with a speedboat, he didn’t think to alert anyone that he was ok, all the while his vessel lay capsized off Eely Point. Our local Harbourmaster, Craig Blake is always welcoming people to get in touch with him to save any alarm being raised. With the wild weather that arrived early this week, there is an increased risk of avalanches in the backcountry. No one should be venturing to the peaks until the conditions have settled.
