THE SPECTACULAR WANAKA CHILDREN’S EASTER EGG HUNT Written by: Wanaka Community Hub
With Easter approaching, we are excited to announce the first of what we hope to be an annual event in Wanaka, The Spectacular Wanaka Children’s Easter Hunt. Easter Saturday, 3 April from 10.00am - 12.30pm at Wanaka Community Hub. Wanaka has not had an Easter hunt in quite some time. As a town with an ever-growing population of young families, this will be a fantastic day for the children of our community. We have an egg hunt with over 2000 eggs hidden around the grounds of Wanaka Community Hub and St Columba’s Anglican Church, as well as Easter crafts and games. This is a not-for-profit event and we would love to thank our generous sponsors. The winner of the giant chocolate bunny created by

This popular fundraising event is an opportunity to take a Sunday drive around our beautiful district and have the privilege of viewing five magnificent and diverse homes on the way. The homes are in Queensberry, Hawea, Albert Town and close to Wanaka. This year Lions are delighted to be able to showcase the Wedge House which featured on Grand Designs of New Zealand in 2019. infertility, poor growth and calcification of teeth and bones in children, multiple nutrient malabsorption. It also has links to depression and occasionally bowel cancer. Coeliac disease can be effectively treated with a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet.
The Wanaka Coeliac Kids Club is one of several support clubs throughout NZ established through Coeliac New Zealand, a National nonprofit organisation.
Food is often the centre of social events and not being able to fully participate can be very isolating. Our aim is to run inclusive events where the kids don’t have to worry about what they can and can’t have, or any risks of cross contamination.
We are excited to announce the following event at Easter: making and decorating Easter biscuits. Other events in the pipeline include a high tea during Coeliac Awareness Week 14-20 June 2021 and mini gingerbread house making at Christmas time. All gluten free of course! It is estimated that 65,000 Kiwis have Coeliac Disease and approximately 80% of these people are unaware they have the condition. Coeliac Disease is a lifelong auto-immune disorder. It damages the intestinal lining and
thus ability to absorb nutrients. It can cause crippling symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting and joint pain. If left undiagnosed or if gluten continues to be consumed, coeliac disease can cause
Celebrate your neighbours this Neighbours Day From Tuesday, March 23 to Friday, March 26, LINK will be collaborating with community organisations and local businesses to give everyone the chance to get involved. The first three events will be held at the Wānaka Community Hub. Tuesday will feature a Lilliput Library workshop, followed by a morning tea open house on Wednesday. A Winter Veggies workshop with Dr Compost on Thursday, and to finish, a Friday night screening of the classic movie ‘Forrest Gump’ at Cinema Paradiso. LINK Upper Clutha is hosting four free events in four days at the end of March to celebrate Neighbours Day Aotearoa. This annual event encourages community building by celebrating the connection that happens across the fence or along the street.
“In previous years, we’ve encouraged neighbour-to-neighbour connection by delivering packs of teabags to residents of the Upper Clutha,” said LINK Facilitator, Kathy Dedo. “In 2019, we sent out 5,000 packs – that’s 10,000 cups of tea!”
Easter biscuit and treat making, Saturday, 27 March 2021, 10.00am - 12.00pm, Wanaka (home address will be given out to those attending). written by Joanna Perry “This year, we’re excited to be offering a range of free events that we hope will appeal to all, young and old, families and flatmates. “It seems a small thing, but place-based connection is where community starts. A parent with young children feels less isolated, an older person feels supported. Kids get outside and play together. In case of emergency, you know who to turn to, or who to check on.” For more information on the LINK-hosted events LINK have to offer and to register for a space, check out our full-page ad in this edition or visit www.link.org.nz

// by Constable GREG NOLET
Hi there community, I have not done one of these for a while. Such is life that I now am tasked to write the best article in The Messenger for the week. Starting with the hot debate on supplying our children with alcohol as they learn the art of communication while under the influence of beer, wine and mixers. The nature of the occasion must be taken into consideration before you go and buy for them. The main issues are; they must be supervised (continuous), a sensible limit for the age (the adult is the decider in this battle), the alcohol level of the drink supplied is a factor too, (alcohol removed and low alcohol drinks to be discussed), alternatives are to be supplied (nonalcoholic drinks), and of course food to be given. If they are going to another person’s place, written permission must be given to an adult who is there and going to stay there. Safe transport is to be mandatory. Section 241 Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 has it all there. The penalties can also be located in the same Act. Take this opportunity to at least have a decent conversation with the ones who have begun to not listen to you as they now know everything. Let them learn from you in this very important step in life. Remember that they will get it wrong and will need a shoulder to cry on. Make sure it is there and have the best words ready for them. A drink driver was caught at the checkpoint on Friday. Off to court for this person. Another person under 20 received an Infringement notice and both are not able to drive for 12 hours. One male drove while being forbidden and had his car impounded. A crash was put down to the oncoming driver failing to dip their headlights. This is as annoying as the moths are to clean off the grill of the car in the morning. Please all persons in the car, check the driver is doing the right thing for the oncoming cars. Cycle helmets and lights at night will be a focus, as the injury from not having these on the right places are costly to the community. Fines will be issued. The Agricultural and Pastural show on the weekend was great. Hundreds of happy people using the day’s events as an awesome family gathering. To all involved we thank you. It was a great day and boost for our community. A few dysfunctional people took it upon themselves to throw bananas around the Night N' Day store at 3.00am on Sunday morning. Good luck with the job application if this is the best you can show to the public. The staff here in Wanaka would like to thank you all for being great and we love the odd wave as we drive past. Keep it up and I hope you’re getting ready for the up and coming winter sport season. Cheers. Greg

LILLIPUT LIBRARY WORKSHOP
17th March 2021
MORNING TEA AT THE HUB
Popular all over New Zealand, Lilliput Libraries are a great way to connect with your neighbours as passers-by take a book and return one later. The Wānaka Lions will tell the story of our local Lilliput Libraries, and bring a new one ready for painting on the day. And for anyone keen to give it a try, there’ll be a flat-packed library ready for a new home.
LINK invites our neighbours near and far to a morning tea and open house here at our home, the Wānaka Community Hub! Place-based connection is where community starts, so drop by for a cuppa, cake and a catch up. Check out the different spaces and services available here, take a tour of the art exhibition and visit our Community Gardens, tended by local families and community groups.
Tuesday March 23, 3:30-5:30pm Wānaka Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street
Wednesday March 24, 11:00am-12:30pm Wānaka Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street
WINTER VEGGIES WORKSHOP WITH DR COMPOST
FRIDAY NIGHT MOVIE FORREST GUMP
The LINK Community Gardens at the Hub make a great setting for any keen gardeners, young and old, experienced or green, to learn how to winterise their garden with Wānaka’s own Dr Compost, aka Ben Elms. This Winter Veggies workshop will inspire you with fresh ideas for growing this winter, from hardy salad greens to classic winter staples like silverbeet and leeks, and help you prepare and protect your garden from the chill.
Cosy up with your flatmates, whānau, or friends for a movie and popcorn at Cinema Paradiso We’ll be screening the classic Forrest Gump, a comedy-drama about love, connection and people helping people.
Thursday March 25, 4:00-6:00pm LINK Community Gardens at the Hub, 34 McDougall Street
Spaces limited for all events. Email info@link.org.nz or call 03 443 7799 to book yours now.

Now in its twelfth year, Neighbours Day Aotearoa is celebrated for ten days each March. It started with the belief that every connection you have with your neighbours makes your neighbourhood more friendly, fun and safe. Neighbours can be stronger and more resilient, significantly enhancing the wellbeing of individuals, family/whānau and the wider community.
