he Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust Melbourne Cup Day 1st November is fast approaching and Wanaka is invited to be part of this exciting day to be held at the Lone Star Wanaka. The Upper Clutha Children’s Medical trust was set up in 2009 to support the children of Upper Clutha families who are finding it difficult to meet the costs of medical treatment. In that time it has helped 35 families and has made a big difference to their lives Doors open at 2.30pm and punters can arrive at any time. The races from Ellerslie will be televised through out the restaurant at 2.53, 3.38, and 4.25 pm and the Melbourne Cup at 5pm. Bets are $2.00 with three prizes per race. The Melbourne Cup Race will be a $10 sweep stake.

Fashion on the field - Best Lady, Best Male, Best Hat (includes gents)-either enter on the day or just enjoy watching. Great prizes for the winners here too. Tickets are $25 which includes a drink and nibbles, Raceday platters will also be available for purchase. It has been a great week in Wanaka, a sunny successful Labour Weekend with both the Rugby World Cup final and Wanakafest to enjoy. Officers on duty on Monday night were kept busy with the high winds bringing down trees and causing a few problems on the roads. Two local men have been dealt with for making a false statement to Police regarding an alleged stolen vehicle and a vehicle accident. A local male was arrested for historic graffiti offences that occurred over the winter months. A driver lost control on Aubrey Road in torrential rain; the vehicle hit the curb and overturned. Thankfully the driver was not injured. A driver lost control of a vehicle whilst negotiating a left hand bend on Kane Road. The vehicle has flipped, skimmed a power pole and come to rest on its roof; the driver sustained only minor injuries. A local male was processed for Excess Breath Alcohol, failing 747 mgms. He will be attending court. A man was witnessed taking his clothes off outside the Doughbin and chose to ignore warnings by Police to behave; he was consequently arrested and later released with a formal warning. Offender/s targeted a vehicle parked outside a residential address, breaking a wing mirror and removing the valve from a tyre and deflating it. Thieves targeted a commercial digger, breaking in and stealing a Sony stereo. Enquiries are continuing. Over the week Police attended four separate domestic related incidents. Police spent some time chasing and catching a dog in the Riverbank Road area that was worrying stock. We hope that this is the end of the reports of injured stock in the area but encourage all dog owners to keep their dogs securely contained on their own properties. Police Search and Rescue staff and volunteers located an injured tramper near Cameron Hut, the patient was air lifted to hospital with leg injuries caused by a fall. The alarm was raised by the tramper's friend who, due to the lack of cell phone coverage in the area, had walked for over an hour to get to the Makarora Information Centre to raise the alarm. Our thanks to staff at the Makarora Info Centre, the SAR volunteers and Constable Manera from Hasst who assisted with the rescue. Lastly a note regarding entering either commercial or government owned properties without permission. Please be aware that if you enter a property to skate or bike on the grounds and you cause damage then you could face prosecution for wilful damage or trespass. Have a great week.
