ASPIRING WANDERERS FIND A HOME Written by: Gayle Thornton

Alzheimers Otago has been quietly working away, growing their support in the Wanaka Community over the past several years. While there is still the opportunity to connect with Alzheimers Otago for support and education, last year saw the introduction of an exciting new service. “The Aspiring Wanderers” (aptly named by club members) has been born from the need expressed by carers of loved ones with diagnosis of dementia or cognitive impairment, for respite. While the Club does offer the opportunity for some R & R for family members or carers, it is also clear that the Club has positive and lasting impacts that extend beyond just the time spent together. Local outings, visits from community organisations and the opportunity

to contribute to local events, charities or organisations gives Club members a sense of belonging and connection that simply cannot be replicated in any other setting. The Club is aimed at supporting those with mild to moderate symptoms of dementia and is intended to promote the retention of memory and other life skills, it runs once a week in the beautiful grounds of the Riverside Park Community Facility in Albert Town. 4 hours together each week sees plenty of time for some cognitive stimulation, to share a meal, stories and plenty of laughs. Good morning, afternoon, or whatever time you are reading this Wanaka. I’m pretty sure we have all felt the temperature drop lately with winter fast approaching. As you will be aware the roads are going to get icy and topped up with necessary gritting, driving becomes just that bit more hazardous. So, it’s time to act in a preventative way and check the condition of your vehicle tyres, overall condition and get those chains in the boot. Speaking of prevention, your local police were able to conduct some prevention activities around seatbelts, cell phones, stop signs and general driving this past week. Not too impressive unfortunately Wanaka, with several infringement notices written for all. Please remember these are safety issues and what may appear trivial can save lives in the long run. Speed around town is also an issue. With the lowering of the speed limits and the road works with reduced zones, some are still not adhering to posted signage. It’s there to be seen so please stick to it, as again this is a safety issue especially for those working on the roads in these areas. Bit of a roundup of last week.

Saturday night, Sunday morning saw a drunk male not find his way back to his accommodation and instead sleep in the storeroom at a separate accommodation provider. When spoken to, he was suitably apologetic. Speaking of alcohol, early Sunday morning saw Police break up a bit of scuffle between a group of drunk males outside the Night n' Day store on Ardmore Street. No real damage and just a bit of a handbags at dawn encounter. A vehicle crash on the Crown Range Road on Thursday saw a car lose control on the ice and crash into the opposite bank ending up on its side. Luckily no one was hurt, and the driver was able to get out and call for help. The cycle helmet campaign is still running with several people being stopped for either no helmet, or lights or both at night. Please wear your helmets and get lights on your bikes as you become one with the darkness and very hard to see. So again, as with the theme of today, think safety. Police have this week attended several mental health issues where people have been directed towards service providers. Remember though, if you or someone you know is having a tough time it’s always OK to reach out and ask for help.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Monthly Meet up for Older Citizens Wanaka St John and Aged Concern have teamed up in the last year or so, to run a monthly opportunity for our older citizens to meet up for lunch, companionship and some entertainment. After a few false starts last year due to COVID-19, the events are now running successfully. They run on the last Saturday of each month at the St John Rooms, Link Way, Wanaka, from 11.00am to around 2.30pm. There is a morning tea served first, then an activity such as bingo. Last time we also had a beautiful painting exhibition by one of the attendees.

Consultants, is an exciting new reference for planning new native plantings, to restore our indigenous biodiversity and local landscape character, maintain our high water quality and sequester carbon. COLB is using this information to plan its new native tree planting in Grandview Creek.

Reduce, refuse, reuse. What do you do? Reusable shopping bags are the norm now, but what about reusable cups and BYO containers? Wastebusters wants to know if, and how you reduce, refuse or reuse, and is asking for input into their survey.

Lunch is served followed by another activity, such as singing of some well known songs. One attendee has a great repetoire on the guitar. It is an opportunity for our older residents to get out of their house for a nice wee break, with some friendly people.

Dr Kelvin Lloyd, principal ecologist of Wildlands Consultants, is the main guest speaker at the upcoming F&B AGM. He will introduce the natural ecosystems mapping for Otago, with support guest speakers giving examples of application to real projects in the Upper Clutha area.

Central Otago-Lakes branch of Forest & Bird (COLB) is using new ecological mapping to inform its tree planting project, to soak up carbon emitted by its activities and to re-introduce indigenous forest biodiversity. It is hard to visualise it today, but the neat farmland lapping the lower range slopes between Johns Creek and Hawea Flat were once the home of mighty native podocarps such as kahikatea and matai.
