The Upper Clutha Children’s Medical Trust is privileged to be hosting Simon Gault at a fundraising function in Wanaka on 12 May at 12.00pm. Simon is a leading chef, restaurateur and author, and will be our guest at a luncheon at Paddons Paddock Winery. As well as owning his own renowned restaurants in New Zealand he has worked in many famous overseas establishments, including Leith’s in London and the prestigious Michelin-starred Thornbury Castle, in Bristol.

Simon has had many television appearances, and has created a great deal of interest with his recent emphasis on healthy and sensible eating. Simon will be covering his experiences relating to this life-enhancing change in his diet, as well as entertaining us with stories of his fascinating culinary and life journey. All funds raised will go to the Trust which was formed to provide financial assistance to families struggling to pay the costs related to their children’s health issues. To date they have helped hundreds of Upper Clutha families, and money raised will be used to further this valuable work.

Police are currently running an operation to educate those cyclists that are not wearing helmets, or do not have lights displayed on their bikes at nights, so get up to speed if you are not playing ball. It’s all in the interest of keeping our cyclists safe on the road. At the end of this month the $80 fine for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle increases to $150- distraction is a major cause of vehicle crashes. The found property cache at the Wanaka Police Station is flush with jewellery and watches that have been handed in. We are fortunate that we live in a very honest town and a large amount of lost property gets returned to its owners. Come in and see Kate or Catherine if you have lost an item and they will see if it is here. Local Police have dealt with three Family Harm incidents this week - advice has been given and our support agencies are making sure all parties are safe and a resolution agreed upon. If you have questions about family harm then you can contact Women’s Refuge on 0800 733 843, Shine Helpline on 0508 744 633 or It’s Not OK on 0800 456 450. Locally, the Wanaka Community Hub based at 34 McDougall Street is a great source of information and support agencies. A couple of drink-drivers were processed this week with high readings resulting in Court proceedings and a period of cycling to work in the cold. Police will continue to monitor our roads for excessive speeds, use of cell phones and wearing of seatbelts, so drive smart.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Top class guests support Otago Regional Choir The Central Otago Regional Choir, conducted by Richard Madden, is delighted to announce the return of this duo in early May, with Yuka leading the string ensemble accompanying the choir. Also joining them will be the choir’s outstanding concert accompanist Sandra Crawshaw and guest artists, violinists Victoria Williamson and Skyla Murray.

In 2019 audiences were blown away by the superb artistry of world-acclaimed organist Kemp English and his partner, virtuoso violinist and Assistant Concert Master of the NZSO, Yuka Eguchi.

In 2020, COVID-19 may have cancelled the appearance of renowned contemporary British composer Will Todd at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Auckland but the first half of the choir’s programme features the New Zealand premiere of four of his works. Audiences loved the choir’s past performances of the music of Ola Gjeilo and like him, Will Todd uses voices and
