THE HUB WILL BE HOPPING THIS EASTER!
The Spectacular
Children's Easter Egg Hunt
The Wanaka Community Hub is excited to announce that we will be holding our annual Wanaka Children’s Spectacular Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, 8 April, 10.00am - 12.00pm at The Hub (34 McDougall Street, Wanaka). This year’s event will be a koha entry with the proceeds going to KidsCan, supporting families affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.
We welcome all children even the very small as everybody leaves with the same amount of chocolate. There are different levels of challenge depending on your age and stage! Bring out your bunny ears and Easter fancy dress, but be
aware that there will be some messy arts and crafts to get involved in and the hunt itself is outdoors. We will have two start times; 10.00am and 11.00am. Make sure to give your preference when you register.
Numbers are limited. Please register by popping into The Hub, contacting us by phone: 03 443-2071 or email: info@wanakacommunityhub.org.nz
We are looking for volunteers to help on the day. This is a great opportunity for MAC Students looking for volunteer hours! If you would like to help out please get in touch.

CRIME LINE
// by your local WANAKA POLICE
Hello folks, here is a bit of a roundup of what has been happening this past fortnight. Intoxication and shoplifting abound.
A house on McDougall Street narrowly missed being hit by a car one morning after said car was clipped by another when they were pulling out of a drive. This is why it pays to look both ways a few times when coming onto a road and not rushing it. Like the cheese adverts say, good things take time. Another crash was attended after some rainfall so watch those conditions.
Police attended the fatal crash in Makarora that has been in the news already. Our thoughts are with the family at this time, and we thank those who helped on the night. There have been a few too many incidents of intoxicated patrons causing problems at the local watering holes about town. Antics cover a broad range of pushing and shoving, glass throwing, punches, street urination and even one punter who mistook an establishment for a gym and began doing pullups from a beam. Hats off to that gent for making gains a priority, but it’s a good indicator to us that there has been one too many had.
The proverbial Wanaka drink driver emerged with a breath result over 5 times the legal limit. Driver and passengers were all completely toasted. An accident waiting to happen so a good thing they were taken off the road. Shoplifting too makes a return with many being brought to our attention and snowing us under. A hard line is being taken on this and offenders will see the inside of a courtroom. I think the community has had a gutsful of it.
A few family harm incidents have kept us busy as well. The weekend warriors have noticed at night an influx in town of buses with people departing them who have most likely been at a wedding based off the way they are dressed. It has also been noticed that a large amount of the intoxication about town is from these people. Remember that if you are too far gone on the tipsy scale,
Take care everyone and have a great week.

Cancer Co ee Group
Cancer Society Wanaka runs a Coffee Group on the first Tuesday of every month at Edgewater Resort, “Wineglass Café” at 10.30am.
This support group is available for people who have been diagnosed with cancer so they can talk to others who are going through similar experiences. Talking about your cancer can reduce the burden. You may find out ways to better deal with treatment or meet new friends who understand what you’re going through. Research has shown that people who take part in support groups have lower levels of
anxiety & depression than those who don’t. If you would like to attend, please just come along and look for the table with the daffodils. There is no obligation or membership, just a group of lovely people having a yarn. If you have any questions, please contact MJ at 022 3430 416.

WAFC Football Season Kicks O
The 2023 football season has officially kicked off in March with pre-season training for the juniors and seniors. In the senior space WAFC has the firsts and the reserve teams playing every Saturday and junior football running for 11 weeks every Sunday from 23 April until 2 July around central Otago.
The Wanaka WAFC First Team came third in the Football South Mens Premier League 2022, which was a first for the club. They will be playing in the same competition this year fighting for the top spot. The team is coached by former All White Blair Scoullar and the competition starts on Saturday, 1 April where the WAFC Prems are playing Northern Hearts Football Club from Timaru at the Wanaka Recreation Centre at 2.45pm.
This season, inline with the Women’s Football World Cup being held in New Zealand, our club is running the Soccer Sisters girls’ football programme for its second year in conjunction with Southern Football. The growth in girls’ football has been phenomenal and with a fantastic turnout at pre-season training and registrations looking positive we intend to continue this trajectory through 2023.
WAFC would like to acknowledge the incredible support we are receiving from our community and with special thanks to Mitre 10 Mega Wanaka, Ray White Wanaka and Spytower onboard as our main kit sponsors. Surface Tension
Following on from 2019’s Live:Stream in Bullock Creek and 2021’s Cross the Line at the Skatepark, Creative Director, Emma Vickers, and and Centralpoint Dance Studio Choreographers, Briony Martin and Nina Fischer bring you the third in the site-specific dance series, Surface Tension at the Wānaka Marina.
A large mixed-age group of Wānaka contemporary and ballet dancers illustrate the connection with, and sometimes tumultuous relationship of, air and water.
The dance piece explores how the mauri, the spiritual essence of these elements, themselves have a ‘dance’. The wind with a single change in direction can switch this elemental partnership of perfect stillness, tension and balance, to a sudden and seemingly orchestrated interruption, breaking the surface and whipping the water into a frenzy of waves and ripples.
We breathe the air and are made of water - we too are affected by these elements. We feel the mauri - the energy and lifeforce that connects us all.

Jim & Barb’s Relationship Advice Bureau
Melbourne couple, Jim & Barb are about to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They have remained co-dependent and dysfunctional all that time. How have they stayed together for so long?
Come and have a cup of tea with them. You can ask questions. They will give you relationship advice... And a biscuit. They have had no training, qualifications or experience. In fact, after you speak to them, you’ll probably just be left with more questions and need to seek further professional advice.

Monthly Market Update
with Bayleys Wānaka
Hello Wānaka!
And welcome to the first edition of the Bayleys Monthly Market Update. We know real estate is a hot topic in Wānaka so we wanted to provide a monthly update to let you know what’s happening in the market, share the latest statistics and fill you in on what our Bayleys Wānaka office has been up to.
February sales statistics have been released by REINZ with 19 homes sold in the Wānaka District and a median sale price of $1,350,000. The number of sales is just slightly lower than the 26 sales in both December 2022 and January 2023 and well below a year ago (37 sales in February 2022) and two years ago (62 sales in February 2021).
While there were 9 section sales in February with a median sale price of $700,000, it’s worth noting the majority of these sales were the titling of a subdivision that were sold off the plan quite some time ago. This compares to just 4 section sales in January 2023. November and December 2022 sale numbers were also affected by titles being issued for a Hawea subdivision.
We’ve noticed an increase in buyer enquiry in March in our office and the number of properties under contract has also increased this month to reflect this which is great to see! We’re seeing particular interest in lower price range properties at the moment, and it’s good to see a slight uplift in buyers interested in sections again. Section sales have been slow in recent months with buyers concerned about supply issues and build costs, but we’re starting to see interest in building again and it’s great to have a number of sections under contract and sold this month.
In terms of our Bayleys office, we’ve been kept busy bringing new properties to market but it was great to take a break to spend a few days at the Wānaka A&P show and see so many familiar faces drop by our tent to visit. Congratulations to Holly and Jeanette, our competition winners, and well done to the show organisers for yet another fantastic event for our region!
Some of our team attended the Bayleys Franchise Forum in February which included an auction evening to raise funds for those effected by Cyclone Gabrielle in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne areas. There was over $160,000 raised to help those in need at this difficult time.
We hope you have a great month ahead and if you’re thinking of buying or selling, our team are happy to provide sales and statistics to help assist you with these important decisions. Visit bayleys.co.nz/wanaka to find our teams contact information.
Please note, statistics are provided from REINZ for the Wānaka Ward and include Albert Town, Lake
