BASKETBALL SEASON IS BACK! Written by: Ian Gosling
Wanaka Basketball Club is back for a new season, starting on 1 June. After a shortened but successful season last year, we are excited to be welcoming back spectators to the Wanaka Recreation Centre. Continuing the excellent worldwide popularity of the sport, the Club looks forward to hosting a similar number of teams as last year, 12 men's and 6 women's, which is a great sign given the decline in tourist population. Among the usual teams there is increased popularity from Mt Aspiring College teams and we will be welcoming back the Cromwell men's team. Starting again this year there will be Referee training, which is compulsory for all teams,

Later in the season we look forward to sending representative teams to Apples, Junior Apples and Eastern Southern Invitational tournaments. The Club are already planning the start of the miniball season for years 3 to 6. This is run through the respective school and will be communicated through the schools in term 4. If you are interested in playing come along to open scrimmages Tuesday, 18 & 25 May, 5.30 - 9.30pm, or join us for a training session on Sundays, 4.00 - 6.00pm at the Wanaka Recreation Centre. We are investigating a residential burglary in the Meadowstone Drive area. If you have seen any suspicious behaviour in that area in the last week, can you let us know please. We dealt with several Family Harm incidents, including the arrest of a male in relation to a Protection Order breach. The cycle helmet campaign is still running and this is just another reminder to wear your helmet. If anyone knows the consequences of not wearing a helmet, I do, and if you want to know more about that hit me up and I can explain. Make sure your bikes have lights if you are riding after dark. We caught two drink drivers this week including a driver who drove drunk to the supermarket at 7.00am in the morning. We had it reported that a person has used a backpackers unlawfully when not booked in and leaving without paying. We have a lead for this which we are following up. It is worth reminding you all to secure your firewood stores so prying eyes and wandering fingers don’t get hold of your precious firewood. Try not to leave a pile on your driveway for too long. Thanks for those who have reported strange behaviour or suspicious activity this week. The public are our eyes and ears out there, so keep that information coming in. Remember to phone 111 if it is happening now, or 105 if it has already happened. Take care and please be safe.
NEW PRODUCT ALERT!

MY COMMUNITY NEWS The Wanaka Death Café The Death Café is an international movement beginning in England in 2011. People meet for group directed conversations about death and dying over coffee and cake, with the view that by increasing awareness of death one can enjoy life fully. Since the Wanaka Death Café started in 2019 discussions have included: sustainable options for burial, cremation and care of deceased, preparing for ones own funeral and making end of life plans, building coffins, making shrouds, death walkers and gentle homecare in death, near death experiences, assisted dying as well as a sharing of personal experiences, and many more current topics.
written by Liz Maluschnig
The facilitators Su Hoskin and Liz Maluschnig don’t promote any particular belief system or course of action. They invite people to bring their curiosity, an open mind and a willingness to join in the respectful conversations. Su and Liz both come with a wealth of experience working with death and dying. The Wanaka Death Café is a free monthly event and welcomes people from all culture, ages and life experiences. To find out more you can join the Facebook page or join their group on www.meetup.com
Next meeting is on Wednesday, 19 May, at 10.00am, Cinema Paradiso.

and New Zealand,” said Quiz Night organising committee member Nicola Brown. Nicola said the last Rotary Club of Wanaka Quiz Night was sold out. “We have some great prizes and many of the teams which participated last time have registered. If people want to join then they need to do it quickly,” said Nicola.
This year the Quiz Night will raise funds for ‘Give Every Child a Future’, a Rotary project in conjunction with UNICEF to introduce three life-saving vaccines into nine Pacific Island Countries: Nauru, Tuvalu, Samoa, Vanuatu, Tonga, Niue, Cook Islands, Kiribati, Tokelau.
Quiz teams are made up of eight (8) people at $25 per person or $200 per team. To register contact Deans Hudson by emailing deans@alpine.biz
“100,000 children will benefit from pneumococcal, rotavirus and HPV vaccines to prevent pneumonia and diarrhoea, the leading cause of death in under-fives, and cervical cancer which claims many more lives in the Pacific than in countries like Australia
The Quiz Night will commence at 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start and is supported by The Rotary Club of Wanaka, Latin Link Adventures, and Fiordland Discovery.
Wanaka MenShed rolls up its doors at new community space Ben Acland, Wanaka Community Workshop (WCW) coordinator, says: “It’s been a long time coming, since the foundations of a Blokes Shed were laid back in 2008. “With the Wanaka population doubling since then, and big changes in how we use and dispose of resources, there is a real need in the community for a workshop space where people can come together to make stuff” he says. Wanaka MenShed rolls up its doors at the new community workshop space. On Thursday, 13 May, you’re invited to come and have a tinker at the opening of the Wanaka MenShed, in a new shared community workshop space on Gordon Road.
written by Anna Mathieson
Current MenShed projects include building ‘Lilliput Libraries,’ (weatherproof boxes which are free community libraries) and fitting out two 40’ containers with shelving for Te Kākano Trust. The Wanaka MenShed will run on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, so people can come and work on their own, or community projects.
It’s a big job to fundraise and resource a community-led MensShed, but sharing the WCW space makes it possible.
“The first order of business on opening day is a nice cuppa and a biscuit, and I hope to see lots of people come to check out the workshop space and get involved,” says Ben.
“We’ve got recovered materials, some tools, a workshop space - and we are now looking for people in the community to come and get involved with making - not only things, but new friends and connections too,” he says.

Maybe you’d see the butcher whacking a set of chops up with a big cleaver or slicing steaks off a big cut of meat. The butcher would receive all their meat in carcass form and cut each animal up into the various cuts of chops, steaks, roasts, racks, etc themselves. Every muscle group had a purpose and very little meat was wasted. Well, that’s how we still do things here at The Butcher’s Block and Smokehouse, and to the best of our knowledge, we’re the only meat retailer in the Upper Clutha to do so! You’ve heard about our locally-farmed beef and lamb, our wild-caught venison and higher welfare pork. Nearly all these animals arrive at The Butcher’s Block in carcass form, allowing us utilise the whole carcass efficiently and for best possible quality. Being able to age beef, in particular, in carcass form or whole cuts shows through in the quality of our beef steaks and other cuts. Even our chickens come in as whole birds which we swiftly and tidily convert into convenient-to-cook chicken breasts, drumsticks and thighs with the fresh chicken frames ready to make stock or raw dog food. The alternative nowadays is that all animals are broken down at the abattoir and the meat retailer simply orders meat cuts by the box. A box of beef trim to make mince, a box of whole porterhouse steak, etc. The retailer has no input into how the meat is aged or prepared. Working with meat animals in carcass form means: •
We manage the quality for a much larger portion of the animal’s path from paddock to plate.
•
Our apprentices learn the full trade of butchering from start to finish, which is getting sadly less and less common right around New Zealand.
APPLE IPADS, IMACS, Macbooks and all accessories available at Selectrix.
•
We utilise any meat scraps in our dog rolls, minimising our waste stream.
LUGGATE HOTEL HAS all super rugby on live this Friday come and see the Highlanders take on the Aussie champions the Reds. Enjoy the match in front of our cozy open fire. Drink and food specials at the Iconic Luggate Hotel.
If you need any other reasons to shop with Adam, Jeff and the team at The Butcher’s Block, maybe these points make a difference to you. We are traditional butchers utilising the best and closest sources of beef, lamb, pork, chicken and venison we can find to ensure you enjoy quality meats at a fair price.
